"Barn hör av sig till gängen för att mörda" : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys utifrån Aftonbladet och Expressens nyhetsrapportering av gängkriminalitet under året 2023 / "Kids are contacting gangs to become killers" : A qualitative content analysis of the Swedish news media: Aftonbladet and Expressen, and their reports of gang crimes from 2023

Edberg, Alva, Alldén, Hannah January 2024 (has links)
This study aims to investigate the Swedish news media's portrayal of gang crime. The purpose of this study is to find out how gang crimes are portrayed and to see what connections are made to gang crime in different contexts. This was done to see if the media's way of writing and portraying can influence society's view on what characterizes gang crime, who is considered involved, the cause and the increase. Therefore, the study is based on the following questions: How does the news media portray gang crimes? How can the news media's representation of gang crime in the news articles construct an image in society of what, who and why someone or something is associated with gang crime?. The material that has been used and analyzed are based on two of the largest evening newspapers in Sweden, from which 18 articles have been selected. To analyze these articles, we chose to use a qualitative content analysis method with the help of a thematic analysis. The data material is analyzed from Erving Goffman's framing-theory with help of Robert Entman´s and Jesper Strömbäck´s media perspective. In summary, the results and analysis present that different types of situations, attributes and causes are representations of what, who and why someone is connected to gang crimes. Those concepts show that we, through the media's portrayal and representations, paint a picture of what gang criminals can look like and what areas they can operate in. In conclusion we can see that media has an impact on society through their portrayal and presentation, but how and in what capacity, is hard to determine.
