Gagnon, Anne, 1972- January 1997 (has links)
After several visits to New France, the French Jesuit Pierre-Francois-Xavier de Charlevoix produced a detailed multivolume study entitled Histoire et description generale de la Nouvelle France. This thesis places the historiographical aims enunciated in that work within the context of eighteenth-century historical writing. Echoes of the approach of both the "philosophes" and the "erudits" can be found in Charlevoix's work and the conflict between these two influences will be analysed here. / By looking more specifically at the issue of the truth through Charlevoix's description of the Jesuit missionaries' enterprise, the essay explains the methods used by the author to increase the credibility of his narrative work. In spite of the stern criticisms which were circulating at the time against the theological view of history, it is by attempting to reconcile the Christian doctrines with a rigorous critical method that Charlevoix tries to reach his goals.

Chenevert, Martin. January 2000 (has links)
When Renaissance linguists took charge of the French language and its evolution, trying to define what French eloquence would be, they relied mostly on classical Greek philosophers' theories about language. Divine inspiration, as evoked by Plato, was in the ancient times opposed to Aristotle's art of oratory and its more technical approach. In the same way, during the Renaissance, Ciceronians promoted Aristotelian rhetoric, whereas their opponents, such as Erasmus or Montaigne, revived Plato's thesis. / Within this context, the present study is centred on two grammarians-philosophers living towards the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the next. In his Eloquence Francoise, Guillaume Du Vair propounded a conception of the Fench language inspired by the stoic theory of representation. Francois de La Mothe Le Vayer, on the other hand, refers to sceptic philosophers in orders to develop in his Considerations sur l'Eloquence de ce tems (1637) a theory of aestheticism based on doubt.

January 1999 (has links)
Analyses of Eighteenth-century French translations of English literature have often been reduced to criticizing so-called "belles infideles". Thus, the complexity of translation and ideological issues has been ignored. The first translations of works by Swift and Pope partake in this tradition as inherited from the Eighteenth century, but they also lay down the groundwork for the Enlightenment. Translating Swiftian satire in Gulliver's Travels , Pope's "badinage" in The Rape of the Lock, Clifton's medical history in the context of Newton's ideas, or social satire in Joseph Andrews, regardless of the degree of "fidelity", is never an innocent process. These issues are coupled with formal ones, translational as well as esthetic, when poetry or the Eighteenth-century novel-style texts are translated. / The importance of the Abbe Desfontaines (1685--1745) is undeniable. As a journalist, he comments, criticizes, and analyses not only the translations of English texts, but also the movement along which English ideas are translated within the French system. His numerous satirical texts also reveal him positioning himself before of the issues of the time. Allowing himself more freedom as a translator, he belongs to the first ones to proceed to the translation of English literature between 1727 and 1743. / In his translations, he adapts, imitates, or censors some elements seen as unacceptable in French. He has therefore been considered to be an "unfaithful translator", a position that does not account for his translation project which it is described in the important paratextual apparatus of his translations. His title pages, and especially his dedications, forewords, and introductions, reveal him as being aware of the most polemical aspects of these texts. So as to avoid the impasse encountered in criticizing the "fidelity" of his translations, I have focused on his paratextual apparatus in order to define his translation project and poetics.

Toward a natural history of architecture : the vegetal culture of Viel de Saint-Maux

Winterton, David E. (David Edward) January 1995 (has links)
This thesis reflects on the Lettres sur l'Architechure of Viel de Saint-Maux, published in Paris in 1787. This period represents a crisis point at which classical architechure and a traditional means of relating-to-the-world had exhausted themselves. In the Lettres, St.-Maux privileges original agrarian societies who worship the natural force of fecundity and the agricultural bounty that results from it. He claims that this worship supplied the radical base for their iconographic and symbolic forms as applied to architecture. Viel de St.-Maux's privileging of the generative forces of nature as a site for sacred imagining and ritual constructions of the agricultural environment belie a relation to the methodology and epistemology of Natural History as formulated by the Comte de Buffon. / Viel de Saint-Maux sought to resist the threat of an overweening rationality by valuing the wonderment cast by the discoveries of Science. He put his faith in natural science and applied this same compulsion to the ancient primitives who, he believed, knew divinely how to propitiate Nature and its fecundity. Fecundity and Agriculture become metaphors for cultural harmony, enlightenment and a re-fusion of the mystery of vitality into everyday life.

Ferreira, Luciano Steinbach January 2005 (has links)
This thesis analyses Ray Bradbury’s and François Truffaut’s Fahrenheit 451, in their proposal of using the oral discourse as a way of maintenance of the literacy as well as resistance to ideological imposition and censorship. It also brings a comparative analysis of the Negative Utopias of the twentieth century (Distopic Literature), along with the rise of writing (alphabetic-phonetic writing), and its close relation to oral discourse. It tries to reproduce the path trailed by oral discourse, passing through the development of writing technology, as well as the cultural production both in the oral and in the writing media, along with its consequences and influences to human thought. From Homer’s oral poems to the oral discourse emerged with the development of electronic devices such as the telephone, which enhance oral discourse in modern times. In this project oral discourse is seen as something cyclical.

La Ville natale de François Mauriac à Fouad Al-Takarli

Al Saadi, Awatif Nsief Jassim 17 December 2009 (has links)
The literary work discusses the representation and the predestination clinging to the hometown in the novels of François Mauriac, French novelist (1885-1970) and Fouad al Takarli, Iraq; novelist (1927-2008). The starting point is: globalization has changed the world into a small village where the individual seeks to find one's place. Thus there is a strong need to define the native place in order to better protect the existence and identity of modern man. The start is with the following preliminary question: "What is the inherent importance acquired by the hometown in human existence?" based on the answers or the proposed answers, we study the representations of the hometown in selected studies to our work. Combining comparative, theoretical, historical, thematic and analytical questions, we analyze how this theme is presented. The research will be conducted to study the development of the novel on a comparative basis and to highlight the quintessence of the French romantic art, and also to present some of the narrative art in the Arab world, especially in Iraq. The study will probe the aspects and meanings of space and especially the Iiterary space. The study aims to present different images of the hometown in the novels of Mauriac and Takarli. These images emanate from memories and childhood. And they Documentary images recording for a reallife. Finally, the symbolic images reflect the predestined clinging to the hometown.

This work has as its goal to analyse the Essais sur l'enseignement en général, et sur celui des mathématiques en particulier, a book written by Silvestre François Lacroix. Taking the book as a symbolic form, the main methodological framework for the analysis was the Hermeneutic of Depth in its three analitical movements: the sociohistorical analysis, the formal (or discursive) analysis, and the interpretation/(re)interpretation of the symbolic form. As a complimentary element in our methodological framework we also took the dispositions of Gérard Genette on what he calls “Editorial Paratexts”. This report was composed by some initial remarks on how the research proposal arose and how it was effectivelly developed, the hermeneutical analysis itself, and some final remarks on how, according to our point of view, the Hermeneutic of Depth can be implemented in Mathematics Education, which are its strenght and limitations
