Evidence of intense discussion on the rights of the mentally disturbed, curative as opposed to control measures in their treatment, and the drawbacks of congregating the afflicted in large institutions can be found as early as the middle of the 19th century. This discussion was provoked by dissemination of knowledge about the oldest community care program of all: the colony of mental patients in Gheel, Belgium. Based on document analysis of publications in the American Journal of Insanity from 1844 to 1921, this study attempts to trace how this discussion resulted in the first wave of deinstitutionalization in the American mental health care system, and the successful implementation of the alternative of hospital treatment. / ABSTRACT: My study further documents how the development of this program was inhibited by the need of psychiatry to attain professional legitimation. In its struggle to acquire public respect and occupational authority, the profession focused on somatic explanations of disease that could justify categorization of psychiatry as a branch of medical science. While this claim was not decisively supported by laboratory findings, or the ability to cure patients, psychiatry put forward genetic explanations of mental disorder. This took the profession to the extreme of the eugenics movement, and eventually positioned it as an institution of social control instead of medical authority. Having thus failed to achieve the ultimate professional legitimation in the medical field, psychiatry was exposed to a new wave of criticism in the 1960s, which led to the second wave of deinstitutionalization. History repeated itself with the same outcome. / ABSTRACT: In the absence of overall support within psychiatric circles, and a lack of appreciation of family care as a viable alternative to hospital treatment among social scientists, deinstitutionalization could not but fail again. Analýza proudění z vyústky osobního vozu s využitím termoanemometrické sondy / Analysis of flow from the car vent using thermoanemometric probe

In this master’s thesis there are summarized fundamental findings about air flow velocity measurements and afterwards introduced the measuring track for automobile car vents, measured object and track arrangement and all used components. Velocity field measurement method is how wire anemometry, and apart from 4 main cases measurements of free air jet, there are velocity profiles in piping measured as an input for CFD simulation. Air vent evaluation criteria are described and their assessment is done for specified cases. Further, there is a CFD simulation presented with comparison to experimental data. Uncertainty of flow rate measured and flow rate setting is determined. Improvement points and encountered issues are presented. Visualization and evaluation program coded in MATLAB environment enables easy data display of CTA results and will serve further vent quality assessment.

Development of an oil free turbo compressor for mobile fuel cell applications – challenges and results

The compressor for air supply to the fuel cell stack is a critical component of the balance of plant, especially for mobile applications. The main requirements of the compressor are the performance regarding pressure ratio, mass flow and efficiency at minimal size and weight. The turbo compressor technology is ideally suited to cope with these requirements. The lifetime requirement and the necessity of oil and particle free air supply advised to employ air bearings. The fuel cell air supply requirements are in conflict with the turbo compressor pressure ratio and mass flow characteristics. Possible solutions and their impact onto compressor design and fuel cell operation are described in this paper. The chosen system design approach considering all design aspects and its interactions during the design phase is beneficial in order to achieve the most lightweight and efficient air supply system for fuel cells. Experimental validation of an air bearing turbo compressor for a 100 kW fuel cell stack on an aerodynamic test rig verifies the predicted performance.

Essays on the Effect of Climate Change on Agriculture and Agricultural Transportation

This dissertation analyzes the impact of climate, and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) on crop yields and grain transportation. The analysis of crop yields endeavors to advance the literature by statistically estimating the effects of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) on observed crop yields. This is done using an econometric model estimated over pooled historical data for 1950-2009 and data from the free air CO2 enrichment experiments. The main findings are: 1) yields of soybeans, cotton, and wheat directly respond to the elevated CO2, while yields of corn and sorghum do not; 2) the effect of crop technological progress on mean yields is non-linear; 3) ignoring atmospheric CO2 in an econometric model of crop yield likely leads to overestimates of the pure effects of climate change and technological progress on crop yields; and 4) average climate conditions and climate variability contribute in a statistically significant way to average crop yields and their variability. To examine climate change impacts on grain transportation flows, this study employs two modeling systems, a U.S. agricultural sector model and an international grain transportation model, with linked inputs/outputs. The main findings are that under climate change: 1) the excess supply of corn and soybeans generally increases in Northern U.S. regions, while it declines in Central and Southern regions; 2) the Corn Belt, the largest producer of corn in the U.S., is anticipated to ship less corn; 3) the importance of lower Mississippi River ports, the largest current destination for U.S. grain exports, diminishes under the climate change cases, whereas the role of Pacific Northwest ports, Great Lakes ports, and Atlantic ports is projected to increase; 4) the demand for grain shipment via rail and truck rises, while demand for barge transport drops.
