L'invasion et la colonisation de la Normandie par les vikings scandinaves introduisirent en frangais plusieurs mots d'origine noroise. Cette étude examine l'étymologie de certains mots réputés d'être de cette origine. II y a particulièrement deux catégories de mots qui ont été considerees. Premièrement il s'agit de termes qui ont un rapport, quelconque à la mer, c'est-à-dire la mer elle-même, certains types d'embarcation, certaines parties du gréage, la navigation, des poissons et la pêche. Chapître II traite de ces mots. Deuxièmement il est question de noms de lieux en Normandie. Le troisième chapître considère ces noms de lieux. II y en a deux groupes, d'abord des noms comportant un nom topographique, et puis des noms composés d'un nom d'homme avec la terminaison -ville. La méthode employée est celle d'examiner les œuvres des experts sur le sujet, et de comparer leurs opinions et leurs conslusions à l'égard des étymologies et des origines; et deuxièmement d'établir le rapport, s'il y a lieu, entre le terme en discussion et le scandinave moderne, surtout le norvégien actuel. Deux résultats de cette examination sont à noter. D'abord on est frappé par le rapport étroit et la similarité remarquable entre le franqais (le normand) et le norvégien moderne. II semble qu'il y ait là un champ de recherche peu explorè. Deuxièmement on trouve souvent un assez grand désaccord parmi les experts. This study reports the spontaneous linguistic behaviour of three children acquiring French as a first language. The introductory chapter presents such information as the children's ages and the parents' linguistic background. In Chapter Two, the children's abilities to pose questions, make requests, and give commands are described. Chapter Three discusses the various negative speech actions that the children are able to perform, and the scope or range of each child's negation vocabulary. Chapter Four discusses the children's abilities to initiate, participate, and recognize linguistic play, that is, speech which is in direct contradiction with the facts and is not intended to be serious. Many second language (L2) teachers are concerned about the use of computers in the classroom and question the value of using them if they do not promote meaningful interaction. Research performed on French as a Second Language (FSL) students’ language interaction at the computer agrees with Mohan's (1986) research on English as a Second Language students' language interaction which suggests that the quantity and quality of interaction is lower during computer tasks compared to conversation. Secondly, analysis of the codeswitching (CS) of the FSL students' interaction suggests that intersentential CS shows functional variation in discourse during computer use compared to conversation. The present study investigates the perceivability of coartic-ulated lip rounding in French. Nine utterances containing the clusters /kstr/,/rstr/, and /rskr/ followed by one of the vowels /i/, /y/, or /u/ in all possible combinations, were truncated at 4 different points before the vowel. Test items in each of the 4 groups therefore contained different amounts of information regarding the nature of the following vowel, due to coarticulatory influences of the vowel on the preceding consonants. Subjects were asked to predict the identity of the missing vowel on hearing the truncated utterances. Subjects were native speakers of either French or English; some of them had a knowledge of phonetics. Results show that when segments up to and including at least half of the final consonant of the cluster are present, subjects correctly identify the missing vowel well above chance levels. Several individuals were able to identify the vowel even when presented with shorter versions of the utterances. No significant difference in performance was found between French and English subjects, nor between subjects with and without phonetic training. Perceivability of individual features of the missing vowel is discussed. It is concluded that coarticulatory effects due to lip rounding (as well as to horizontal tongue position) provide perceivable information at a level significantly above chance, and that this information may be used by the perceptual mechanism as an aid in speech sound identification. / Medicine, Faculty of / Audiology and Speech Sciences, School of / Graduate

Le but de ce mémoire est de traiter des aspects majeurs du vaudou utilisés par René Depestre dans Hadriana dans tous mes rêves. Il se peut que ce roman soit la meilleure des œuvres de Depestre puisque c'est dans ce roman que Depestre a cristallisé tous ses usages du vaudou en tant que principe unificateur des différents thèmes qui y sont abordés. Dans ses premières œuvres en vers, on remarque que Depestre a déjà utilisé le vaudou comme un outil sociopolitique. Par exemple, dans Un arc-en-ciel pour l'occident chrétien, le vaudou est un moyen pour bouleverser le statu quo raciste dans le Sud des Etats-Unis. Après sa rupture avec le parti communiste et son exil de Cuba, Depestre est devenu déçu avec le marxisme et n'importe quelle autre machine politique. A la suite de cette rupture il a produit son premier roman, Le mât de cocagne. Ici, le vaudou devient un outil utilisé par le gouvernement pour contrôler l'esprit du peuple, un opium pour les gens simples, sans instruction. Ensuite, dans ses œuvres suivantes fictives en prose, le vaudou est lié désormais à une dimension érotique chez Depestre qui a proclamé lui-même qu'il a abandonné la politique. Par conséquent l'expression politique ne s'exprime guère dans ces œuvres. Enfin, plus tard dans sa carrière, la façon humoristique dans laquelle Depestre s'est exprimé atteint un sommet avec ses œuvres fantastiques en prose, surtout avec Hadriana dans tous mes rêves. Cependant, en ce qui concerne cette étude, on va essayer de montrer ce qu'on appelle les différents aspects ou plutôt avatars du vaudou qui se trouvent dans Hadriana. C'est-à-dire le vaudou dans ses rapports avec la vie politique, la dimension érotique et l'humour.
