I have done a follow up study of the restoration of two rivers, Röälven and Grundan, in order to evaluate the effects of the restoration on the endemic population of trout. Both rivers have been used for timber floating during many years throughout the 20th century, and because of this, had all obstacles such as rocks and wood parts removed. In 2004-2005 both rivers were restored, and rocks and wood were put back into the rivers. Spawning grounds were created and boulder dams were constructed to promote the streaming water. The result showed that the trout population of both rivers increased after the restoration, but also that the trout population of Röälven increased more than that of Grundan. My conclusion is that the way the restoration is of a river contributes to the result.

Aplexa marmorata (Guilding, 1828)(Basommatophora : Physidae) : an invasive freshwater snail in South Africa.Dana, Pelisa. January 2000 (has links)
Invasions of ecosystems by alien species is a worldwide problem. Man, with his constant travelling, introduces organisms to places they have never occurred in before. The introductions may be accidental or deliberate. Some of the introduced organisms become invasive and some of
these also become pests. Two aquatic pulmonate snails, Physa acuta (Physidae) and Lymnaea columella (Lymnaeidae), were introduced to South Africa probably through the aquarium industry in the 1940s and have now spread to most of the country's freshwater systems. A third invasive pulmonate, and second physid provisionally called Aplexa cf. marmorata, has recently been found in South African freshwaters. Comparison between A.. cf. marmorata found in Durban and P. acuta from Pietermaritzburg as an example of the genus Physa, confirmed that they belong to different genera and are therefore different species. Features compared were the shell, radula, foot, mantle, male genitalia and sperm morphology. Aplexa cf. marmorata is characterized by its foot having a pointed posterior end with a dark mid-dorsal stripe while that of
P. acuta does not have these features. The mantle edge ofA.cf. marmorata has short triangular dentations while that of P. acuta has long finger-like projections. Aplexa cf. marmorata does not have an externally visible preputial gland whereas P. acuta does. The penis of A.cf. marmorata
has a lateral opening while that of P. acuta has a sub-terminal outlet. TEM sections of the spermatozoon of A.cf. marmorata showed that it has a maximum of two glycogen helices around the mid-piece while P. acuta is known to have three. A study of the population dynamics of A.cf. marmorata in Durban showed it to produce three overlapping generations within a 14 month period whereas P. acuta has been shown to produce as many as eight over a similar time period. Further comparisons between South African A. cf. marmorata and similar material from the West
Indies, Nigeria and St Lucia (KwaZulu-Natal) showed that they shared the same features with the specimens collected in Durban and are therefore considered to belong to the same species , Aplexa marmorata (Guilding, 1828). This species is indigenous to the Caribbean and northern parts of South America. The picture is however complicated by the fact that Dr L Paraense, doyen of the Brazilian school of freshwater malacology, does not recognize the genus Aplexa and redescribed this species under the name Physa marmorata in 1986. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2000.

The structuring of aquatic macroinvertebrate communities within cave streamsWatson, Troy Norton January 2010 (has links)
The unusual environmental conditions within caves provided unique opportunities for developing an understanding of ecosystem processes. However, relatively few studies have been conducted on the ecology of New Zealand cave systems. The primary aim of this research was to investigate changes in aquatic invertebrate communities along a longitudinal gradient from the surface into caves and investigate the fundamental drivers of cave communities. This study was carried out in three streams (two in pasture catchments and one in a forested catchment) flowing into caves in the Waitomo region, North Island, New Zealand. In order to address these aims I carried out a longitudinal survey of 12 sites in each stream, an experimental manipulation of food, and an isotopic study of a single stream. The longitudinal survey of the three cave streams revealed light intensity as well as algal and CPOM biomass all decreased significantly from outside the caves into caves. In contrast, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, stream width, depth, and velocity did not vary significantly with distance into caves. Benthic aquatic macroinvertebrate communities within the caves were a depauperate subset of surface communities, appearing to be structured by gradients in resources and colonisation through drift. However, some invertebrate taxa (primarily predators) were rarely found within caves, further suggesting that resource gradients were structuring cave communities. Surprisingly, the densities of some collector-browsers (primarily mayflies) increased within cave streams relative to surface densities. This may be due to a decrease in competition and predation, flexible feeding strategies, and high drift propensity. However, the benthic densities of most taxa within the caves appeared to be related to drift densities. Although surface forest and pastoral stream communities differed in community composition and density 32 meters within the caves invertebrate community diversity and density became similar, although specific taxa within communities varied. This convergence was attributed to similar environmental gradients within the caves. The resource addition experiment (adding leaf packs) indicated that cave streams were resource limited; the addition of leaves produced communities of similar richness and density across the environmental gradient. The isotopic survey suggested cave stream invertebrate communities were reliant upon similar basal resources to surface streams. However, within the cave epilithon appeared to be increasingly important while filamentous algae were absent. Cave
aquatic invertebrates were also found to support terrestrial predators (spiders, harvestmen, and glow-worms), presumably increasing the abundance and diversity of terrestrial cave communities. In conclusion, aquatic cave communities were reliant upon surface derived resources and consequently strongly linked to surface land-use and managerial practices.

The role of allelopathy in microbial food websWeissbach, Astrid January 2011 (has links)
Phytoplankton produce allelochemicals; excreted chemical substances that are affecting other microorganisms in their direct environment. In my thesis, I investigated strain specific variability in the expression of allelochemicals of the harmful flagellate Prymnesium parvum, that is euryhaline but mainly bloom forming in brackish water. I found a large variation among strains, but further showed that all strains of P. parvum were more allelopathic in brackish water compared to marine water. In a marine microbial community, allelochemicals can affect prey, competitors and grazers both, directly and indirectly. For instance, in a food web where grazing controls prey abundance, the negative direct effect of allelochemicals on grazers will positive affect their prey. During my thesis, I investigated how marine microbial communities respond to the addition of allelochemicals. I performed field experiments with microbial communities from seawater collected from different places over Europe, and tested how this communities respond to the addition of allelochemicals from the dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense. Before I incubated the microbial communities for several days with A. tamarense algal filtrate, I evaluated the allelopathic efficiency of the algal filtrates with an algal monoculture of Rhodomonas spp. This allowed me to compare the effect of A. tamarense filtrate between the different microbial communities. In general, bacteria reached higher abundances when allelochemicals were present. As allelochemicals also inhibited nanoflagellates and ciliates, we concluded, that allelochemicals indirectly benefit bacteria by reducing grazing pressure. In microbial food webs with many heterotrophic grazers, allelochemicals further benefitted other phytoplankton by inhibiting grazers. It was also shown that bioavailable DOM is released from a microbial community when allelochemicals are present. As most DOM was released from the seawater fraction > 60 μm, we concluded, that larger microorganisms are more affected by allelochemicals than smaller microorganisms. The results can be explained by the surface to volume ratio of microorganisms: Larger organisms provide more contact surface for allelochemicals, and therefore, are probably more vulnerable towards allelochemicals. In conclusion, the effect of allelochemicals on a microbial community depends among others on the structure of the microbial food web, the amount of available DOM, the particle density in the seawater and the composition of the phytoplankton community.

A study in the Lower North Island located Parenephrops planifrons (koura) at 73 sites out of 104 sites visited (appendix 1). There was a significant difference in habitat variables between the sites which had koura present and those where they were absent. Examples of sites are shown in Appendix 3. Habitat variables important for classifying koura habitat included riparian cover, predators, winter equilibrium temperature and presence of in-stream habitat in the form of vegetation, litter cover and the stream sequence composition. Regression trees built could accurately describe the data but the kappa statistic was low.
