The role of friendship quality in mediating social comparison between friends /Gasiorek, Barbara M. January 1989 (has links)
Research in social comparison conducted with male subjects, strangers, and acquaintances has shown that unfavourable comparisons between highly similar individuals result in a negative self-evaluation, dissatisfaction, and decreased liking for the comparison other. Two studies were conducted on comparisons between 16-18 year-old female friends who perceived each other as high or middle in similarity in order to test the generality of these findings for close friends. Subjects were given false feedback on a test of maturity and told that they were at level 4 out of 8 while their friend was at level 6. The first study indicated that social comparisons between highly similar, close friends resulted in less satisfaction, but in a more positive self-evaluation and no change in liking for the partner. A strong correlation was also found to exist between similarity and quality of friendship. It was hypothesised that this may account for the differences in comparisons between friends and strangers. The second study looked at high and low quality of friendship in addition to similarity and allowed subjects to interact with their partners. It was found that High-quality friends evaluated themselves more positively after the comparison and experienced an increase in satisfaction and liking for their partner who was found to be very supportive. The opposite was found for Low-quality friendships. This research establishes the nature of the relationship as a critical variable in social comparison research.

In their own words : divorced and widowed women, retirement, and friendshipsBarlow-Pieterick, Marilyn 04 October 2002 (has links)
Friends benefit both our psychological and our emotional well-being by
increasing overall happiness, life satisfaction, and a positive sense of self among
women. Often, however, friendships decrease in the later years. The purpose of this
study is to learn more about divorced or widowed, retired women and their
friendships, specifically, whether friendships changed from work to retirement.
Friendships have been clearly identified by women as a significant component
of retirement life. The importance of friendship increases with age, and friends
have been found to buffer single women in particular from becoming isolated in
retirement.
The sample recruited for this study consisted of 20 single, career women who
had been retired between five and ten years and who were not coresiding with
another person. This study utilized in-depth, qualitative interviewing to enable
participants to define themselves and their experiences.
Overall, it appeared as though these women were very satisfied with retirement
and considered it to be a positive experience. Even though workplace friendships
had gradually been lost since retirement, this loss was considered normal and
former coworkers were considered to be on different paths from the retirees.
Workplace friends were often not whom the women felt closest to or socialized
with preretirement; consequently this gradual drifting and loss of workplace
friendships was not considered problematic. The women overall were making new
friends.
Various types of discord among friends were also reported. Discord had
negative affects but did not necessarily cause dissolution of the friendship. Betrayal
was often an incentive to immediately end a friendship; however, betrayal was
uncommon.
Friends played a major role in these women's lives. The emotional aspects of
the women's friendships were reported to be most important. Friends helped these
women feel valued and provided a substantial amount of support to one another.
The findings of this study should assure those divorced or widowed women who
may be nearing retirement that the adjustment to retirement need not be difficult,
especially if one has supportive friends. / Graduation date: 2003

Exploring the perspectives of bullying amongst Grade 5 girlsBredekamp, Judith, Swart, Estelle 12 1900 (has links)
122 Leaves printed on single pages, preliminary pages and numbered pages 1-113. Includes bibliography, list of abbreviations, list of definitions, list of tables and figures and list of appendices. Pdf format (OCR). / Thesis (MEd (Educational Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Research into bullying has brought with it an awareness of many aspects of this phenomenon. Firstly, it has shown a distinction between various types of
bullying and also how these are further delineated by means of gender.
Secondly, by mere omission, it has shown the lack of research on bullying
amongst girls. Bullying amongst girls is rife, however the research in this area
is limited. The aims of this research are to further explore the complex nature
of bullying amongst girls and to gain understanding of its impact; to use the
perspectives of the participants to drive intervention and preventative
strategies; to dispel the myths which support the practice of bullying; and to
raise awareness of an invisible problem, thereby rendering it visible.
This interpretive study explores bullying amongst girls by using the
perspectives of Grade 5 girls in a parochial school in the Western Cape. The
process of inquiry is embedded in the ecosystemic approach and
constructivism, which emphasises the importance of context and the belief
that knowledge is not passively received, but actively constructed on the basis
of the experiences of an individual. Data was collected through the use of
semi-structured recorded interviews with focus groups, which were then
transcribed verbatim and categorised into themes.
The themes which emerged include the varied and complex nature of bullying
techniques and the effects of bullying. The main finding was that some girls
have innate characteristics which help maintain bullying while others have
characteristics which protect them from bullying. The environment also plays
a large part in either maintaining bullying or protecting girls from bullying. The
implication was that intervention and preventative strategies need to be based
on these personal and contextual factors in order to effect change.
gekategoriseer is.
