The integrated cutting-sto ck and lot-sizing problem (PIDC) is an optimization prob-lem that simultaneously considers decisions related to the lot sizing problem (PDL) and the cutting sto ck problems (PCE). The goal is to capture the interdep endence b etween these decisions in order to enable economy of raw materials and reduction of pro duction and inventory costs. In this work the PIDC is treated in the context of a small scale furni-ture plant in which decisions asso ciated with the lot sizing and cutting sto ck are taken by the pro duction manager. A case study was conducted in a plant that pro duces furniture of various kinds (in general wardrob es, dressing tables and b eds) from rectangular wo o d plates of different thicknesses. Three mo dels are formulated: one for the PDL, one for the PCE and a mixed integer mo del that integrates the PDL and the PCE.The column generation technique is used to solve the linear relaxation of two mo dels. We compare the mo dels results with the practice and analyze the computational study in different ways. It was p ossible to obtain a solution capable of implementing b oth the strategy... The Wright Incorporation of Perth minute books, 1700 to 1840 : a transcription

Petznick, Laura Ware Stone January 1999 (has links)
"The Wright Incorporation of Perth 1700 to 1840" documents and examines the Scottish trade incorporation with specific emphasis upon its furniture-making wrights. In the introductory chapter, relevant published sources are cited, and Perth is presented as a Royal Burgh with explanations as to how and why evidence was selected and utilised. Chapter Two examines the Wright Incorporation, its structure and dominant role within the Perth furniture trade. Also, the chapter concludes with a discussion of furniture produced by freemen and strangers of the Incorporation, with particular reference to furniture for Perth's New Town. In Chapter Three, "Case Studies of Selected Perth Wrights", the trades of twelve furniture-making wrights are discussed. Peculiarities of the Wright Incorporation of Perth and the furniture trade which it governed also are addressed. The largest chapter, "A Biographical Dictionary of Perth Wrights and Related Trades", identifies and describes over six hundred wrights who were operating in the Royal Burgh and Perth's immediate suburbs. In conclusion, although a large body of physical evidence of Perth furniture has yet to be documented, what has been located reveals a highly organised and fashionably conscious regional centre of Scottish furniture production, largely controlled by the Wright Incorporation of Perth from 1700 to 1840.

An application of the flexible specialisation methodology to the furniture industry in the Western Cape

Ajam, Tania January 1995 (has links)
Bibliography: p. 121-131. / The primary aim of this paper is to attempt to apply the flexible specialisation (FS) methodology to the furniture industry in the Western Cape. As described in detail in the following section, the gains from employing this approach include "the conceptualisation of industrialisation as a locally embedded process, and the focus on network and on technological capability as essential elements in this process" (Aeroe, 1992:16). A positive approach is then used to assess which aspects of the Western Cape furniture industry (if any) are similar to the industrial organisational structure which has been termed the small firm variant of FS. The fieldwork for the empirical part of the case study was carried out on a sample of 20 furniture manufacturing concerns drawn from three clusters of furniture enterprises in Epping, Lansdowne and Blackheath. The criterion for the selection of these research areas was the existence of a critical mass of sectorally concentrated firms agglomerated within a geographically compact area. A key objective was to attempt to isolate the influence of the variable "locality" on other variables such as the extent of cooperation, firm performance and strategies and supplier relations, inter alia. Finally the normative implications of this variant are examined. Do features in the Western Cape industrial landscape exist which suggest the potential for development of regional industrial clusters along FS lines? In order to conduct a case study broadly within the FS framework, it is necessary to first review the literature and extract testable hypotheses. Firstly the general literature on the FS small firm variant is reviewed. Then a survey of FS case studies of the furniture/woodworking sector is presented. The next phase is a detailed perspective on the South African furniture industry given as a background to the empirical study which follows.
