The images which comprise the majority of these pages have been given the name Light Sculptures. They are not computer generated or hand drawn, they are photographs of the interaction between light and a reflective cylinder. Originally color transparencies, the Sculptures have been interpreted by the computer as inverted, greyscale images. What was once a black background is now white paper, and what were once lines of light are now lines of ink. The sculptures were synthesized through experimentation with the fundamental elements of architecture: Light, Material, and Geometry. Following the series of Light Sculptures are images of Objects through which materials, tectonics, and proportion were explored. The design and fabrication of each piece was guided by the intent to make something which functioned structurally, visually, and tactily as an integrated whole. / Master of Architecture

The dissertation investigates the ancient Egyptian furniture industry, from ancient production and preservation, to modern-day reconstruction and conservation. The main focus of the dissertation falls on an in-depth investigation of styles and designs that can be viewed as characteristic/diagnostic of ancient Egyptian furniture. Emphasis falls on the evolution of functional and decorative elements and the development of individual items. Key design markers are identified and the developments of certain styles are traced. In-depth discussions reveal the finer structural and design elements of individual items along a chronological time frame. These include beds, stools, chairs, footrests, couches, mattresses and cushions, boxes and chests, tables, bed canopies and screens. The rate at which the human race is exhausting the planet’s resources, a transition from a linear economy to a circular economy has become necessary. More importantly the success of circular economy is dependent on the consumer’s everyday actions and practices. This project looks to contribute to that smooth transition at a consumer behavior level of furniture consumption through market actions. It specifically focuses on the sustainable consumption of the sofas to be able to collect data and actionable insights so that it can serve as an example that can be applied to all types of furniture. The project created a framework from literature review on consumer behavior of furniture, sustainability and circular economy. Furthermore, it used several design methods to collect and analyze the data, before arriving at the final design project. The resulting project is called the ‘culture of care’. Based on the collected actionable insights throughout the project, the culture of care project proposes several circular based market actions in the form of service design, product design and product-service design to maintain and repair sofas in the hands of the consumers.

I began my thesis with compact living as my starting point. I researched the way we live in cities today and learnt that 57% of Stockholm’s inhabitants live in a two bedroom and kitchen apartment or smaller. My aim is to create furniture modules that can enhance small apartments. I created three modules that incorporate all essential items of furniture; these modules can be adapted for any apartment. In order to show how the modules can be used I picked a small site in central Stockholm and allowed the house to be shaped by the apartments, the apartments are in turn shaped by the furniture.

The objective of the project was to develop a furniture set that consists of a multifunctional bed and a cabinet. A pre-study was performed to define the problem area and to set the requirements for the furniture. The pre-study included: studies and discussions at the associated company, literature review within the field, user survey, market search and ergonomics study. When the specification was set and clarified, the concept generation phase was started. Design methods were used to structure and support the design activity. In addition, principles of inclusive design were followed in order to end up with a design that would fit a larger part of the targeted customer group. The generated design concepts were assessed according to fulfilment of set requirements. One final concept was chosen for further development in the following detail design phase. This activity included specifying the design in detail, e.g. related to materials, colours and accessories. The collaboration with the company was essential during the whole project for getting inspiration, feedback and important inputs to the design activity. Hence, the company’s opinions were continuously considered along the design process. A prototype was made of the final design and tests were performed to assess the design and to get input for further development.
