This project involves the retelling of a historic New Zealand story using a system of multiple narrations. The research is presented in three parts:1. The practical component, Last Man Hanging: a book of pictures.2. A contextualising exegesis.3. 31 months (a documentation of my visual journey). The major component of this research is the creative text, Last Man Hanging. This is a book of pictures and type that retells the story of the trial and death of Walter James Bolton; the last man hanged in New Zealand. Its narrative discourse involves the orchestration of relationships through a compendium of characters, architecture, artifacts, environments and typography. The book integrates narrative voices that may be grouped into two often-conflicting positions; the story as it appeared in newspapers at the time, and the writer's personal consideration of an alternative series of events and emphases. Though an argument of tellings the book suggests a different verdict to that established by the courts in 1956.Finally, the exegesis contextualises both works. It considers specific theoretical issues pertaining to Last Man Hanging's narrative voice and imagery.

This thesis was a descriptive study of the process of designing a newspaper front page by three journalists. The newspaper industry has placed increased importance on journalistic design. However, little research had been completed on the mental processes of designers.This study was concerned with the processes that occur as professional journalists designed a front page of a newspaper as determined by protocol analysis. Three Indiana newspapers,The Evansville Courier, The South Bend Tribune and The Times from Munster, Ind., were selected. The individual who designed the front page on a regular basis participated in the protocol sessions.The conclusions showed that these designers spent the majority of the design process planning and analyzing materials to be used. The majority of all decisions made by the designers were based on past design knowledge. The journalists applied their skills in a rapid and confident way as they designed separate portions of the page until all elements were used and the page was complete. / Department of Journalism

This project has been a study of selected graphic media and their relationship to the production of a limited edition printing of a fine book. The scope of the study was limited to the relationship of the graphic image to that of the printed contents of the book. No attempt was made to survey all of the varied possibilities of pictorial or typographical processes. The book contains eight recipes and twelve prints. All the prints were cut and printed in the traditional woodcut process. The type was hand printed and the book was hand bound. The paper, which is included in this project, gives a description and discussion of the project, historical precedents, technical history, contemporary methods and conclusions.

Physically based mesh-free deformation framework and techniques for computer graphicsChang, Jian January 2006 (has links)
In this thesis, we introduce a mesh-free deformation framework. Four different applications are presented based on it. Among them, a technique of mesh-free deformations and a technique ofreusable deformations are to model the deformations in two different ways, while the hyper-twist and the force mapping are applied to other graphic purposes related to deformations.Existing physicanv-based deformation techniques, such as the finite element method and the massspring systems, require the deformed object to be properly meshed. The proposed mesh-free deformations are constructed with unconnected points and no mesh is required in the computation.This process strict~1' follows the principles of classic mechanics and a deformation is defined as a combination of fundamental solutions. Because no mesh is involved, deforming a complex shape is as straightforw'ard as deforming a simple one and the trade-off between efficiency and accuracy is easy to achieve by redistributing the points concerned. Experiments show that this method is fast and offers similar accuracy to the finite element methods.Reducing both computational cost and amount of unnecessary human intervention remains a pressing issue in the animation production. To provide a faster and more user-friendly tool, we extend the above mesh-free deformations technique and develop another technique. A key feature is thereusability of deformations. Existing deformations can be simply extracted and reapplied physicallyusing the 'copy' and 'paste' operations. it relieves the modelling efforts. In this way, the visual realism is combined with the modelling efficiency and the user-friendliness for animators.The mesh-free deformation framework is capable to describe the deformations in an infinite body which is in line with the distortion of a 3D space. The twist of an infinite body, hyper-twist, is investigated to show how a 3D space and the object embedded can be radically deformed. Abstract shapes with aesthetic effects can be created in this process as well as their animations. Following the idea of mesh-free computation, we apply forces on a surface to create the fine details of the surface. A force map records the applied forces and their distributions. We call this technique force mapping, which can be used for surface modeling, compression, reconstruction and editing. As an alternative to displacement mapping, force mapping benefits from the fact that the physical property, force, is integrated into a geometric surface explicitly.
