Terrain as a continuum can be categorized into landform units that exhibit common physiological and morphological characteristics which might serve as a boundary condition for a wide range of application domains. However, heterogeneous views, definitions and applications on landforms yield inconsistent and incompatible nomenclature that lack interoperability. Yet, there is still room for developing methods for establishing a formal background for general type of classification models to provide different disciplines with a basis of landscape description that is also commonsense to human insight.
This study proposes a method of landform classification that reveals general geomorphometry of the landscape. Landform classes that are commonsense to human insight and relevant to various disciplines is adopted to generate landforms at the landscape scale. Proposed method integrates local geometry of the surface with geomorphometric context. A set of DTMs at relevant scale are utilized where local geometry is represented with morphometric DTMs, and geomorphometric context is incorporated through relative terrain position and terrain network. &ldquo / Object-based image analysis (OBIA)&rdquo / tools that have the ability to segment DTMs into more representative terrain objects and connect those objects in a multi-level hierarchy is adopted. A fuzzy classification approach is utilized via semantic descriptions to represent ambiguities both in attribute and geographical space.
Method is applied at different case areas to evaluate the efficiency and stability of the classification. Outcomes portray reasonable amount of consistency where the results can be utilized as general or multi-purpose regarding some ambiguity that is inherent in landforms as well.

Primer Design Using Double Orthogonal Arrays Intelligent Crossover Genetic AlgorithmLi, Yi-Te 21 July 2003 (has links)
In polymerase chain reaction (PCR), in order to amplify massive DNA sequences successfully, it needs to design an appropriate primer pair. The constraints derived from the traits of PCR for proceeding PCR are used in searching for primer pairs. In this paper, in order to decrease the searching space and to increase the feasible quality of primers, a double orthogonal arrays intelligent crossover genetic algorithm (DOAIGA) is used to solve the primer design problem. DOAIGA combines the traditional genetic algorithm and the Taguchi methodology to efficiently search feasible primers under required constraints. The proposed intelligent crossover subsystem mainly concentrates on the better genes more systematic. The key point of DOAIGA is to achieve the elitism goal by applying the orthogonal arrays (OAs) that is used in quality engineering with a small amount of experiment features. In this thesis, the double orthogonal arrays are used to approach a better forward and reverse primers separately. Compared to the current existing softwares, DOAIGA can obtain feasible primer pairs more effectively. Finally the correctness of primer pair is verified by PCR experiment.

Assessment of passive decay heat removal in the General Atomics Modular Helium ReactorCocheme, Francois Guilhem 17 February 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this report is to present the results of the study and analysis of loss-of-coolant and loss-of-flow simulations performed on the Modular Helium Reactor developed by General Atomics using the thermal-hydraulics code RELAP5-3D/ATHENA. The MHR is a high temperature gas cooled reactor. It is a prismatic core concept for New Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP). Very few reactors of that kind have been designed in the past. Furthermore, the MHR is supposed to be a highly passively safe concept. So there are high needs for numerical simulations in order to confirm the design. The project is dedicated to the assessment of the passive decay heat capabilities of the reactor under abnormal transient conditions. To comply with the requirements of the NGNP, fuel and structural temperatures must be kept under design safety limits under any circumstances. During the project, the MHR has been investigated: first under steady-state conditions and then under transient settings. The project confirms that satisfying passive decay heat removal by means of natural heat transfer mechanisms (convection, conduction and radiation) occurs.

Local agencies must comply with environmental justice regulation and as such, it is important that they possess practical tools to identify target populations and assess impacts of projects, programs, and policies on these populations. These tools are not readily available or fully developed to evaluate impacts on a regional level, especially when the impacts are benefits rather than burdens. This issue comes into play when accessibility is assessed. This analysis measures accessibility for an environmental justice evaluation using spatial statistical clusters and cumulative opportunity. It shows that the majority of schools, libraries and local transit lines are within areas with high concentrations of target populations, however, park space is limited in these areas. Alternative approaches for environmental justice assessments of regional outcomes such as accessibility provide opportunities for MPOs to gain a greater understanding of the regional impacts of transportation improvements as well as more accurately comply with the spirit of environmental justice regulations.
