An internship with Arthur Roger Gallery, LLC

Grappin, Benjamin 01 May 2005 (has links)
The following report is the analysis of a three-month internship within this organization, and will discuss topics as they relate to the cuniculum of the Arts Administration degree. The for-profit nature of this internship and its completion within a small-scale structure presented me with several not-so-clearly delineated tasks. In order to properly introduce the topics associated with the responsibilities of the assignment at Arthur Roger Gallery, the reader must first become familiar with the nature of the business, and its management structure. Chapter II is exclusively devoted to the purpose of the internship. By considering the role of the intern, who acted in the role of an assistant to the staff, this section will outline the importance of compiling an inventory, and the necessity of maintaining the gallery's website in the most accurate manner. The third chapter of the present report is an attempt to identify the reasons that separate the Arthur Roger Gallery from its competitors. This section will address several elements discussed through our cuniculum, particularly during the Visual Art and Marketing classes. Broadly speaking, it will show that Arthur Roger has fully understood the "who, what, where, why, when and how" of selling fine art in his market area. The final section of the discussion will involve several points dealing principally with management and technical concerns, for the most part related to the growing activity of the business and its recent evolutions.

Putting the Public in Public Art Galleries: The Insurgent Curator and Visual Art as Critical Form of Creative Inquiry

Marsden, Scott Kerwin 21 December 2015 (has links)
My research explores the concept of visual art as a form of critical inquiry and the gallery as a site for critical dialogue and social change. I argue that art galleries can be spaces of change and can be used to mount a critique of contemporary society’s dominant narrative of neoliberalism that is being incorporated into our public and private lives. Art galleries are public spheres for civil society that offer citizens opportunities to engage in debate on contemporary issues, where we can expose ourselves to new ideas, stimulate our minds, and explore other ways of knowing and becoming agents of change. My investigation takes the form of researching, developing, and presenting an exhibition of selected photographs as part of the exhibition, Open Conversations. This exhibition explored the art practice of Canadian photographers Carole Condé and Karl Beveridge, who have developed an artistic process that involves direct collaboration in the production of art employing a participatory, socially engaged framework. I claim the role of “insurgent curator” (a person who challenges the current state of affairs) through my attempt to locate my inquiry within my current praxis as curator, that is, within a critical form of creative inquiry. As an insurgent curator, I attempt to insert alternative histories and perspectives in a public art gallery as a means of offering different ways of knowing contemporary society. The concept of critical inquiry and the use of dialogical aesthetics underlie my concept of insurgent curatorial practice. I propose that the use of dialogue has important implications in helping to situate art galleries as public spaces that invite participation, dialogue, and community, and thereby have a profound impact on visitors’ meaning making. Through the use of critical creative inquiry, I ask how this research can generate individual transformation and help create progressive forms of social action. / Graduate / scottmarsden@haidagwaii.ca

Seabed Filter Feasibility Study of Om Almisk Island

Sesler, Kathryn 06 1900 (has links)
Freshwater access has always been and is continuing to be a severe problem in desert coastal regions, despite the fact that they have an unlimited supply of easily accessible saline water. Water desalination plants are well established and heavily relied upon throughout the Middle East, Saudi Arabia in particular. However, water desalination tends to be a very expensive and energy intensive solution to the problem. The transition from using open water intake systems and all of the pretreatment processes that they require, to using seabed water filters as an intake, would potentially reduce the lifetime costs, energy consumption, and environmental impacts commonly associated with water desalination. This is because the filtration process that the seabed filter generates, serves as sufficient pretreatment for seawater as well as eliminating any risk of entrainment or impingement of marine organisms. The main objective of this research is to conduct a feasibility study on Om Almisk Island, an island off the coast of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), to determine if it would be a suitable location to construct a seabed water filter as a replacement for the current open water intake. The Om Almisk Island site was evaluated through collection of sand samples over a radial grid around Om Almisk Island and sample analysis using grain size distribution, porosity, and hydraulic conductivity. The lack of mud, high hydraulic conductivity, proximity to KAUST, and the shallow waters of the sandy apron surrounding Om Almisk Island make this an ideal location for a seabed water filter to be used as an intake and pretreatment for the KAUST desalination plant. This location also has low tide change and the presence of benthic macrofauna to create bioturbation in the sediments, which could inhibit the growth of a schmutzdecke. If this biological layer forms, it could drastically reduce the hydraulic conductivity of the system. Due to the high hydraulic conductivity of the native sand, a relatively small footprint is possible for the design of the filter. A design with an intake of 105,000 m3/day, using four active galleries and one standby gallery was generated.

Trendy ve vystavování současného umění v pražských galerijních prostorách / Trends in Exhibiting and Presentation of Contemporary Art in Prague Galleries

Foschiová, Regina January 2012 (has links)
The thesis named The Trends in Exhibiting Contemporary Art in Prague galleries deals with the topic of displaying and mediating contemporary art in the galleries and exhibitions. The thesis focuses on the elements of the complex issue and the particular exhibitions held in Prague from 2007 to 2011. Each element is covered in one dedicated chapter - the artwork, the viewer, the curator and the gallery. The chapter about the artwork summarizes the evolution of this term in the 20th century. The chapter about the viewer pursues the biological aspects of the process of seeing and perception and the relationship between the viewer and the image. The chapter about the work of the curator of the contemporary art focuses on the evolution of their part in the galleries' working process from the figure of Harald Szeemann to the term The Crisis of Curator. The gallery is introduced as a three- dimensional term: as a space for exhibitions, an institution and a mediating scope. The examples included in each chapter are derived from the Prague galleries and exhibition spaces and so the thesis also deals with the topic of Prague gallery scene. The final chapter is constituted of ten exhibitions that were held in Prague from 2007 to 2011 and are in my opinion the most important and significant ones for that...

A problemÃtica do remanso dos eixos de macrodrenagem nas galerias urbanas: estudo de caso sobre a modelagem da cheia do Rio Poty no ano de 2009 em Teresina-PI / The problem of backwater of macro drainage shafts in urban galleries: study case on the modeling of the full Rio Poty in 2009 in Teresina, PI

Maria Josà Carvalho Silva 27 November 2014 (has links)
The city of Teresina, Piauà state capital, is intersected by rivers ParnaÃba and Poty, the last tributary to the first, within the urban area of Teresina. The ParnaÃba River controls a watershed of 237,000 square kilometers upstream of Teresina, while the river Poty, controls a watershed of 51,400 kmÂ. The main hydrological characteristic of floods in the ParnaÃba and Poty rivers is that ParnaÃba River floods are likely to partial control from the gates of Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) Good Hope, whereas such control does not exist to floods arising from the Poty River basin. This study examined the question interference flooding of Poty river with minor drainage system formed by affluent urban galleries cross the same, noting the possibility of drowning and backwater Poty river on the galleries certain conditions of hydrological floods. Analyzed the case of the full 2009 in the transverse drainage system to Poty River, which caused the flood diverse neighborhoods, because of backwater due to the increase of share of the Poty river water level d greater than the level of the upper generating lines of the galleries cross. It was found that, because of desague quotas of galleries Spring neighborhood in Poty river, the floods of the river with two-year return period (TR = 2 years), are sufficient to promote the reverse flow in the gallery system and the Flood connected urban areas. It is concluded that there is need for structural measures to solve this problem, from, or control of Poty river floods through the sump, as a future dam Castle of PiauÃ, or from use of urban detention basins, locks tide and pumping system of rainwater in interconnected basins with the Poty River.

Arts interventions in dementia care

Baker, Erin L. January 2014 (has links)
Dementia refers to a variety of diseases that are characterised by cognitive difficulties and an overall decline in daily living skills. Psychologically-informed arts and health interventions may be particularly valuable ways of improving the lives of people with a dementia and their carers. This study investigated arts-based interventions at two, London and Nottingham, art galleries where 12 people with mild to moderate dementia and their 12 carers were engaged in art-viewing and art-making. Post-intervention interviews with participants (n=12) and facilitators (n = 4), field notes and extensive written communication between the facilitators and research team was analysed using a grounded theory approach to establish how the intervention affected those involved. Three categories, a valued place, intellectual stimulation and social interaction, combined to create positive emotional and relational effects for both those with dementia and carers. In addition, there was evidence of a changed perception of dementia by facilitators. The resulting theory has potential implications for the use of arts within health and social care by applied psychologists, health, social care and museum professionals, as well as community services.

Psychosocial interventions and museums

Johnson, Joana January 2015 (has links)
Previous research has shown that people with dementia and carers derive wellbeing-related benefits from group art-viewing, and that facilitated museum object handling is effective in increasing subjective wellbeing for people with a range of health conditions. The present study aimed to compare the impact of these activities on subjective wellbeing of people with dementia and carers. A quasi-experimental crossover design was used. People with early to middle stage dementia and their respective carers (N = 66) attended a museum session in small groups where they participated in three activities: museum object handling, a refreshment break and art-viewing. Visual analogue scales were used to rate subjective wellbeing pre and post object-handling and art-viewing. Mixed-design ANOVAs indicated wellbeing significantly increased for people with dementia and carers during the museum session irrespective of the order in which they participated in object-handling and art-viewing. Analysis of pre and post-condition scores across pooled orders indicated wellbeing significantly increased from object-handling and art-viewing for carers; wellbeing for people with dementia significantly increased from object-handling; the increase from art-viewing was not statistically significant. A refreshment break did not produce significant change in wellbeing for either group. An end-of-intervention questionnaire indicated that experiences of the session were positive. Limitations and directions for future research were discussed. Results provided a rationale for partnership working between museums and healthcare professionals.
