Factors influencing intergenerational conflict for immigrant and non-immigrant adolescents

McLaren, Norma-Jean January 1991 (has links)
This study examined the factors related to intergenerational conflict as perceived by immigrant and non-immigrant adolescents. The study replicated the work of Doreen Rosenthal (1989) using a modified version of the questionaire she administered to adolescents in Melbourne, Australia. This study was administered to 300 grade eleven students in two Vancouver high schools. The data was analysed to determine the effect of the following factors on intergenerational conflict: immigrant status, bicultural adaptation, gender, ethnicity, age at time of immigration, presence or absence of a common complex language with parents. Analysis revealed that students in general reported a moderate amount of conflict with their parents. Intergenerational conflict was not affected by whether or not the adolescent was an immigrant to Canada. Female adolescents reported higher conflict with their fathers, but no gender differences were noted with mothers. Of the three largest ethnic groups in the study, Indo-Canadians reported significantly more conflict with mothers than did either Euro-Canadians or Chinese-Canadians and a greater amount of conflict with fathers than did Chinese-Canadians. Chinese-Canadians reported less conflict with either parent than did either Indo-Canadians or Euro-Canadians. Bicultural students did not report significantly less conflict than traditional, assimilated or marginal adolescents. Age at the time of immigration did not affect the amount of intergenerational conflict. And finally, adolescents who speak a common language with their parents in the home perceived less conflict with mothers. While few recommendations could be made as a result of the findings, a framework for the analysis of integration patterns was developed, a comprehensive review of the literature conducted and questions for future research on intergenerational conflict were raised. / Education, Faculty of / Graduate

Late Adolescents’ Perceptions of a Digital Generation Gap and Perceived Parent-Child Relations

Vaterlaus, J. Mitch 01 August 2012 (has links)
Empirical investigations concerning generational differences between parents and adolescents were prevalent in the 1960s and 1970s. Interest in generational differences has resurfaced with the advent and evolution of technology. This study examined perceived generational differences between late adolescent and parent knowledge about interactive technologies. A sample of late adolescents (N = 605) reported their own interactive technology knowledge and perceptions of their parents’ technology knowledge via online questionnaires. Paired t tests and Cohen’s d were used to compare late adolescents’ self-reported knowledge with their perceptions of their parents’ knowledge. Perceived digital generation gaps were identified in the knowledge areas of video chat, cell phones, general social networking, Twitter, basic email, and advanced email. The differences remained constant when paired t tests were conducted separately by male and female late adolescents. Patterns between perceived parent-late adolescent relationship characteristics and perceived generational differences in technology knowledge were examined using Cohen’s d. Differences in perceived parent-child quality time were found among male late adolescents when there were generational technology knowledge differences in the areas of email, Twitter, and social networking. Parent-child conflict was most related to perceived generational technology differences in Twitter, video chat, and general social networking knowledge. Finally, perceived generational technology knowledge differences in the areas of video chat, Twitter, email, and general social networking were most related to differences in perceived parental-knowledge of late adolescents’ behaviors.

Våldet finns i ens ficka : En studie om unga tjejers särskilda utsatthet för digitalt våld / The violence is in one's pocket : A study about young girls’ particular vulnerability to digital violence

Siljén Panarello, Laís, Comstedt Centerlid, Ida January 2023 (has links)
The aim of this qualitative study was to investigate professionals' perception of young girls' particular vulnerability to digital violence, its consequences, and professional approaches to digital violence. Four professionals working in women’s and girl’s shelters were interviewed in a semi-structured format. The results indicate that young girls are particularly vulnerable because of their gender, age, and the power structure in society. The consequences of being affected by digital violence are described as among others mental illness and problems to establish other healthy relations. Both youth’s and adult’s lack of knowledge about digital violence may contribute to its perpetuation. The work with digital violence is limited because of a generation gap that leads to the fact that adults lack understanding of young girls' particular vulnerability. The study identifies a need for increased education about digital violence for both young people and adults.

The other side of the mountain : initiatives of a younger Pentecostal generation

Gorman, Roger Dale 11 1900 (has links)
Pentecostal churches are growing significantly across the world, but occasionally theological tensions arise within Pentecostal churches, sometimes related to intergenerational differences, which hinder both quantitative and qualitative growth. This study analyses the dynamics of a particular generation gap in one South African Pentecostal congregation. It explores the initiatives of a cell group from the younger generation, aimed at enhancing the credibility and effectiveness of the congregation's witness. The cell group initiatives highlighted issues of leadership, biblical hermeneutics, and the need for a theological re-assessment of local traditions that had always acted as identity markers for the older generation. This study contends that the conflict between a more collectivist older generation and a more individualist younger generation can be bridged through well prepared conflict resolution processes led by credible intervention teams and through some form of accommodation of the views and desires of both generations. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D.Th. Multi-generational ministries in the context of a local church / Dissertation

Codrington, Graeme Trevor 11 1900 (has links)
Never before in living memory has the gap in mutual acceptance and understanding between generations been as large as it is now. Massive societal and cultural shifts, fuelled by changing technology, increasing rates of change, globilisation and disconnectedness, have caused a deep divide between those born in the first two-thirds of this century and those born in the latter decades. This dissertation aims to identify the causes of this divide, quantify the effects and suggest solutions. Although generally applicable to many different organisations in society, especially schools, parenting, businesses with young and old employees or those with generationally diverse target markets, this dissertation focuses specifically in application on the context of local churches. It aims to provide an understanding of the concept of a "generation gap" and practical guidelines for churches seeking to become truly multi-generational in their structures and ministries. / Practical Theology / M. Influencia de las estrategias de employee communication en el employee engagement de los empleados millennials de la Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas / Influence of employee communication strategies on the employee engagement of millennials employees at Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas

Vergara Arteaga, Brenda Rosario 13 September 2020 (has links)
The emotional bond between an organization and its employees is known as employee engagement. Workers with a high level of employee engagement are known to be much more productive, and their job rotations rates are lower than those of the average employee. However, with the work force being mainly integrated by millennials, companies are having higher rotation levels than before, because, unlike past generations, millennials prefer changing jobs frequently. This represents a great loss for companies, since they must constantly invest in hiring new personnel; therefore, maintaining a good level of employee engagement with millennial employees has become a priority. One of the factors known to increase employee engagement is employee communication, a term that refers to all the communication processes that take place within a company to communicate effectively with employees. In this work, we analyze the best employee communication strategies to improve employee engagement from millennials working in the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas. The research presents a naturalistic paradigm with a qualitative approach that will use interviews as a tool. / Trabajo de investigación

Coexistencia generacional en las organizaciones

Pacchioni  Hurtado, Valeria Anttuaneth 31 July 2020 (has links)
This paper analyzes and explores the professional practices of different generations in the workplace; on the one hand, there is the "Generation Y", with extensive technological skills and great digital knowledge; and on the other, the "Baby Boomers", elderly people focused on their career and their traditional way of working. The generational transition is currently a challenge for all organizations, since this gap is not handled correctly, creating a negative work environment, so that it decreases the productivity of staff. Likewise, the possibility of a “Baby Boomer” finding workplaces in administrative areas, is decreasing more and more, due to the accelerated changes in internal processes of organizations and the greater pressure from their customers. However, the coexistence of both generations is increasingly complexed due to the prejudices and perceptions they have about each other in terms of decision making, processes and even in the work methodology. In relation to these prejudices, they result in the labor and emotional imbalance of their employees. / Trabajo de investigación
