The Schönflies conjecture

Skarby, Jacob January 2022 (has links)
In this degree project we define elementary notions of differential topology aswell as n-dimensional k-handles and relate these to Morse theory. Moreover, we define integral Morse homology and reference its equivalence to singularhomology. We then go on to state the Schönflies conjecture and prove it forn > 5 by induction over the Morse chain complex using handle slides and the Whitney trick. Having completed the proof, we relate the Schönflies conjectureto the h-cobordism theorem and the generalised Poincar´e conjecture.

A numerical study of cohomogeneity one manifolds

Chiu, Vincent January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation explores numerical solutions for the cohomogeneity one Einstein and Ricci soliton equations when the principal orbits are SU(3)/T^2 and Sp(3)/Sp(1)^3. We present new numerical evidence for steady, expanding solitons as well as Einstein metrics with positive scalar curvature. In the case of steady solitons we produced a one-parameter family of solutions. In the expanding case, we generated a two-parameter family of solutions and in particular in the negative Einstein case we generated a one-parameter family of solutions. In the compact Einstein case we found numerical evidence for an in nite number of Einstein metrics. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Den isoperimetriska olikheten

Tatanfack, Simplice Alain January 2023 (has links)

The geometry of manifolds with asymptotically flat ends

Hipólito Fernandes, Bernardo January 2023 (has links)
This monograph thesis is divided into two chapters. In the first, "A study of ALF structures", we prove that the structure at infinity of a ALF manifold is essentially unique, i.e. any structures associated to a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold that is asymptotic to a circle fibration over an Euclidean base, with fibres of asymptotically constant length, are related by a rigid motion plus low-order terms. The proof is based on showing the existence of harmonic coordinate-like functions. In the second, "A study of fibred boundary metrics", we show the existence of a unique transverse diffeomorphism associated to a fibred boundary metric, i.e. a map that transforms a fibred boundary metric into another with no transverse components. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a diffeomorphism that maps a fixed fibred boundary metric into another can be uniquely decomposed as a composition of an isometry on the boundary and a small diffeomorphism. We present several examples of such transverse diffeomorphisms together with their decompositions. We conclude this second chapter by introducing the notion of linear mass at infinity of a fibred boundary metrics, and give a full classification of the 3-dimensional case associated to asymptotically euclidean fibred boundary metrics. /
QC 2023-08-21
