Characterizing the Quaternary Hydrostratigraphy of Buried Valleys using Multi-Parameter Borehole Geophysics, Georgetown, Ontario

<p>In 2009, the Regional Municipality of Halton and McMaster University initiated a 2-year collaborative study (Georgetown Aquifer Characterization Study-GACS) of the groundwater resource potential of Quaternary sediments near Georgetown, Ontario. As part of that study, this thesis investigated the Quaternary infill stratigraphy of the Middle Sixteen Mile Creek (MSMC) and Cedarvale (CV) buried valley systems using newly acquired core and borehole geophysical data. Multi-parameter geophysical log suites (natural gamma, EM conductivity, resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, full-waveform sonic, caliper) were acquired in 16 new boreholes (16 m to 55 m depth), pre-existing monitoring wells and from archival data. Characteristic log responses (electrofacies) were identified and correlated with core to produce a detailed subsurface model of a 20-km<sup>2</sup> area to the southwest of Georgetown. Nine distinctive lithostratgraphic units were identified and their geometry mapped across the study area as structure contour and isochore thickness maps. The subsurface model shows that the CV valley truncates the Late Wisconsin MSMC stratigraphy along a channelized erosional unconformity and is a younger (post-glacial?) sediment-hosted valley system. Model results demonstrate the high level of stratigraphic heterogeneity and complexity that is inherent in bedrock valley systems and provides a geological framework for understanding groundwater resource availability.</p> <p>Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to selected log suites to evaluate the potential for objective lithologic classification using log data. Gamma, resistivity and conductivity logs were most useful for lithologic typing, while p-wave velocity and resistivity logs were more diagnostic of compact diamict units. Cross plots of the first and second principal components of log parameters discriminated silts and clays/shales from sand/gravel and diamict lithofacies. The results show that PCA is a viable method for predicting subsurface lithology in un-cored boreholes and can assist in the identification of hydrostratigraphic units.</p> / Master of Science (MSc)

Creating sacred space: a Spiritualist church

When contemplating the history of religious architecture several typologies become apparent. There is the refinement of Gothic cathedrals where the volume and use of material not only reinforced the liturgy but gave breath to a tempo of chant. There also is the small New England chapel steeple and modest gable which provide such a compelling image that it has become an icon in American culture. This thesis explores the design of a sacred space independent of traditional symbolism. Rather than attempting to refine an existing typology this design explored what is fundamental in creating a sacred space. A church for a congregation of Spiritualists, who currently are renovating a Methodist church in Georgetown. [2] This design is centered on a few elements. In response to Spiritualist liturgy which is devoid of an altar there is an exploration of defining void thus creating a focal point by the enclosure of space. The importance of views is emphasized, expressly views to sacred areas that are not actually touched. Layering of transparency is explored which provides a vehicle for information between discrete areas. / Master of Architecture

Esta operação fez parte de um convênio firmado entre a Marinha Americana e a Marinha Brasileira, cujo objetivo era investigar o Oceano Atlântico Sul, especialmente a área onde se estende a província fisiográfica da Cadeia Mesoatlântica. Com o objetivo de estudar a Zona de Fratura Dupla Bode Verde, e assim conhecer melhor esta feição tão marcante no fundo oceânico e margem continental, foram tratados e interpretados os dados batimétricos, gravimétricos e magnéticos colhidos na operação anteriormente citada. A análise dos dados batimétricos permitiu uma definição para esta zona de fratura, com o seu caráter duplo marcado pela presença de duas calhas contínuas, paralelas entre si, e separadas por um alto que tem o seu próprio "rift-valley". As anomalias gravimétricas encontradas confirmam o caráter duplo, com os dois mínimos observados correspondendo às duas calhas da fratura. Estas calhas separam um bloco crustal de aproximadamente 40 km de largura. Com base nos dados gravimétricos, foram construídas nove seções crustais sobre a zona de fratura, que permitiram observar que a interface crosta-manto sofre um afinamento crustal embaixo das paredes da fratura. Esta interface, que encontra-se normalmente a uma profundidade de 8-9 km, passa a atingir profundidades de 5.5-6.0 km abaixo das paredes da fratura, com a crosta apresentando uma espessura de 2.0 km nestas partes. Este afinamento crustal é causado pela subida de material do manto. A extensiva alteração hidrotermal que ocorre na depressão central da fratura, pode ser a responsável pelo menor afinamento crustal observado nesta parte da zona de fratura. Para a interpretação dos dados magnéticos, foi usada uma escala de tempo de polaridade magnética entre o Cretáceo Inferior e o Cenozóico, e uma taxa de espalhamento oceânico de 2.0 cm/ano. Para a camada de basalto, que é responsável por parte das anomalias magnéticas observadas, foi usada uma espessura média de 0.5 km. Nas paredes da zona de fratura, ocorre uma diminuição na espessura desta camada, havendo uma interrupção da mesma na depressão central da fratura. / In January 1980, the CENTRATLAN Project Bode Verde I was conducted by collecting geophysical and geological data at the central portion of the Middle Atlantic Ridge, south of Ascensão Island. This research was done within an agreement between the US-American and Brazilian Navy. With the objective to describe the geology of the Bode Verde fracture zone and to understand the origins of this feature on the ocean floor and continental margin, bathimetric, gravimetric and magnetic data were collected. The analysis of the bathimetric data allowed to describe this feature as a doubled fractured zone, marked by two continuous troughs, parallel to each other, separated by a high with its own rift-valley. The gravimetric anomalies confirm this double feature, with the two observed gravimetric minimum corresponding to the two troughs of the fracture zone. These troughs separate a crustal block of approximately 40 km width. Based on gravimetric data it was possible to construct nine crustal sections of the fracture zone. They permitted to observe a thinning of the crust-mantle interface beneath the fracture walls. The interface crust-mantle that usually has a depth of 8-9 km, is only 5.5-6.0 km deep beneath the fracture walls with a crust thickness of about 2.0 km. The crustal thinning is caused by the ascent of mantle material. The hidrothermal alteration in the central trough of the fracture can be responsible for the minor crustal thinning observed in this part of the fracture zone. For the interpretation of the magnetic data was used a time scale of magnetic polarity between the Lower Cretaceous and Cenozoic and a spreading rate of the ocean floor of about 2.0 cm/year. For interpretation a thickness of 0.5 km was estimated for the basalt layer, which is responsible for the observed magnetic anomalies. lts thickness decreases in the fracture walls, being interrupted at the central trough fracture.
