A geophysical characterization of New River terrace deposits in Giles County, Virginia

A series of geologically recent faults was discovered within a folded succession of stratified alluvial sediments, commonly referred to as New River terrace deposits, near the town of Pembroke in Giles County, southwest Virginia. Geological and geophysical investigations were utilized to characterize the terrace deposits and investigate the nature of the observed faults. Geologic mapping of the underlying carbonate bedrock provided orientation measurements of fault, bedding, and joint planes; however, none of the features mapped within the bedrock could be directly correlated with the observed faults. The results of geophysical studies suggest significant variations in lithology within the alluvial sediments. Seismic velocities (P-wave) obtained from reversed seismic refraction profiles range from 900-1700 meters/second, while apparent electrical resistivity values vary from 300-2000 ohm-meters. A 75 meter wide, east-west trending low resistivity zone extending across the center of the study area is juxtaposed against an extremely high resistivity zone which is present to the north. The results of seismic reflection and electrical resistivity data analysis are interpreted to suggest that several small and large scale extensional faults may exist throughout the sediments, possibly reaching depths of up to 30 meters. An isopach map of preserved terrace thickness indicates that the faults lie within an east-west trending zone of maximum terrace thickness (35-40 meters thick), which corresponds to a topographic rise in land surface. A structure contour map of the bedrock surface reveals an area of lowest bedrock elevation beneath this zone, implying inverted topography. Results indicate that the evolution of the terrace might be related to ongoing karst processes within the bedrock. / Master of Science

Measurement and extraction of the Giles parameters in Ytterbium-doped fibre

Thesis (MSc (Physics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / The role fulfilled by theoretical models is rapidly increasing due to lasers becoming appli- cation driven to satisfy certain criteria and demands. Construction of high precision lasers requires good theoretical models and consequently good approximations of the parameters that such models are based upon. Despite the di erent model formalisms, most share a com- mon set of input parameters, including fibre waveguiding properties, input powers, transition cross-sections and overlaps between guided modes and the dopand distribution. Experimental and numerical work which was aimed at obtaining the wide-band emission and absorption cross-sections of fibre indirectly by means of the Giles parameters was done. The Giles parameters were used rather than the well known ionic cross-sections primarily because of the convenient encapsulation of the cumbersome overlap factors and the ionic cross-sections within the Giles parameters. The wide band spectral characteristics of the Giles parameters are indispensable in the design of fibre lasers and amplifiers, as they form the key parameters for laser models. These parameters are normally obtained utilizing absorption spectroscopy to obtain the absorption cross-sections and models such as the Fuchtbauer Ladenberg relation, the Mc- Cumber relation or uorescence spectroscopy to obtain the emission cross-sections. Recent research however indicates that these methods are inaccurate in certain spectral regions. An investigation was launched to extract the Giles parameters from measurements of the ampli- fied spontaneous emission (ASE) and pump absorption in ytterbium-doped fibre for several lengths of fibre and subsequent computer simulations, utilizing an ampli fier model. The Giles parameters are extracted with a fitting algorithm that adjusts the relevant numerical values to minimize the least square difference between the numerical data obtained from the amplifier model and the measured data. Using the model devised in this project on literature data, the Giles parameters were extracted and compared to the Giles parameters extracted in literature on the same data. This comparison conforms the extraction of the Giles parameters, utilizing the model devised in this project, as successful. Subsequently the model devised in this project was applied to extract the Giles parameters from experimental data measured at Stellenbosch, using a double cladding ytterbium-doped fibre. Finally a fibre laser was built utilizing the double cladding ytterbium-doped fibre and the output was measured. The Giles parameters extracted were then used in a fibre laser model to calculate the output and compare it to the measurements taken. This served as suffcient verification that the Giles parameters extracted can be used to model a fibre laser effciently.

This is a generalization of Woodall's Conjecture (which is still open). Schrijver found the first known counterexample to the Edmonds-Giles Conjecture, while Cornuejols and Guenin found the next two. In this thesis we introduce new counterexamples, and prove that all minimal counterexamples of a certain type have now been found.

The life and legend of Giles of Santarem, Dominican friar and physician (d.1265) : a perspective on medieval Portugal

One of the aims of this thesis is to establish the medical background of Giles of Santarem; it does not attempt a full survey of medicine in medieval Portugal. In order to do this it has been necessary to bring together a wide variety of primary and secondary sources which are essential to the reconstruction of Giles' intellectual milieu. In so doing, it is hoped that this will provide an introduction to the relatively neglected topic of medieval Portuguese medicine. Until the 1980s, references to Giles of Santarem were either found in medical studies Such as those described above, or in works of Dominican history. Since then the Dominican perspective has been strengthened, but largely as a result of the publication of editions of sixteenth-century Dominican vitae. First of all in 1981-2, Aires Nascimento produced an edition of the ‘Vita beati Gilii Sanctarenensis' of Baltazar de Sao Joao. This was followed in 1995 by the critical edition of the ‘De conversione miranda D. Aegidii Lusitani' of André de Resende by Virginia Soares Pereira. The former editor is a medievalist with a firm interest in social and intellectual history, but he makes no indepth study of the text; the latter is primarily interested in the early-modern context of the author and makes only a cursory study of the medieval basis of the vita. These texts are probably the most important sources for the life of Giles of Santarem and considerable effort is taken to establish the reliability of such late sources and examine the complex process of legend-building that they reveal. Other recent work on Giles of Santarem has largely been carried out by local historians, particularly of Santarem and Vouzela, Giles' traditional place of birth. The most significant, and scholarly, of these is the aforementioned exhibition catalogue ‘S. Frei Gile a sua Época'. This very recent interest suggests that there has been a realization that Giles of Santarem had far more importance in medieval Portugal than has hitherto been accorded him. His life, as will be shown, opens a window onto many vistas: early Dominican settlement, genealogy, education, medical treatment, dissemination of texts, the politics of the civil war, hagiography, and historiography ... Historians need to realize that the study of medieval Iberia makes little sense without an appreciation of all the Iberian kingdoms. Portugal may have been in extremis mundi in the Middle Ages, but it was certainly very much part of the medieval world and needs to be studied, both for its own contribution to European history and for the influence the wider world had on the development of its society and institutions. The following in-depth study of the life and legend of Giles of Santarem seeks to provide a key to this approach.
