People’s Perception on Development : A case study on Chinese investment in Gunjur, Gambia

Keitta, Isatou January 2018 (has links)
This study examines how the people of Gunjur perceive the development impacts caused by a Chinese fishmeal factory. Also, how they believe it has affected them. The study highlights the voices of the villagers by viewing development and foreign investment as more complex rather than looking at the increasement of the GDP. This is to identify if there is an actual development contribution which is entitled and enjoyed by the villagers. 16 qualitative interviews were performed in November 2017 in Gunjur, The Gambia. The results show both the positive and negative short-term consequences caused by the operating factory and how it affects the people, society and environment. It also shows that the development contribution from the factory can be questioned. Finally, it suggests that the government should prioritise sustainability and inclusiveness in their approach with foreign investors to reach a stable and long-term development in the country.

Commodification of Otherness : A qualitative postcolonial analysis of representation in contemporary  French cinema

Karlsson, Beatrice January 2017 (has links)
This thesis investigates how colonial legacies shape representational practices in contemporary French cinema and interrogates how hierarchical differences are produced and challenged in the cinematic media. Combining the fields of postcolonial theory and culture studies enables a theoretical framework that connects contemporary cultural debates about the politics of representation with the legacies of colonial stereotypes and racialized imageries. Through the application of qualitative content analysis and critical discourse analysis the thesis strives to make a theoretical contribution to the existing body of litterateur that is empirically driven. Additionally an intersectional dimension will be included as the thesis addresses the question of representations in relation to race, gender, class and sexuality and further how power operates through culture as a production of knowledge. The major findings of the thesis consist of how the empirical material reveals how contemporary cinematic expressions reuse colonial racial stereotypes and appropriate blackness as instrumental in commodification of “otherness”. Accordingly the thesis challenges dominant notions of the impact of race in a French context.

The European Union and Food Security : A study of how the European Union works with food security within the context of international cooperation and development

Höglund, Lovisa January 2018 (has links)
Abstract   Today a lot of people in the world experience food insecurity. In this paper a qualitative content analysis method has been used in order to answer the following question:   How does the European Union work with food security? More specifically, this paper investigates if the EU´s focus is on strengthening people’s entitlements or on increasing the availability of food, e.g. through increasing the production of food.   This analysis was able to confirm that the 23 European Union projects (within the international cooperation and development context) which were analysed focus their attempts to achieve food security in a variety of different ways. Around half the projects include elements of improving both entitlements and food availability/production, whilst roughly half of the projects aim to improve only one of the above-mentioned elements. It was possible to identify Sen’s entitlement approach in the European Union projects; however, the paper reached the conclusion that although the entitlement approach to achieving food security is clearly very influential in the projects, it is not the only influence present.

Female Representation and Development : A case study of the gender-sensitive developmental outcomes of female representation in the Rwandan parliament

Kylili, Anna January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to examine the relation between women’s representation and gender-sensitive development, or women-friendly issues. This is done through a case study of Rwanda, a country that has faced rapid development and increase in women representatives in parliament which makes the country unique and useful for this study. The thesis focuses on two things, establishing a correlation between female representation and gender-sensitive development, and examining the causality between the two as well as investigating other possible factors that may have contributed to the development in Rwanda. While previous research on Rwanda focus more on the relation between female representation and democracy this thesis will focus on female representation and development. The thesis finds that there is a correlation in time between the increase in women in parliament in Rwanda and gender-sensitive development. It also establishes that the progress in Rwanda is unique in relation to other countries in the region with lower numbers of female representation. Furthermore, the thesis finds that despite arguments of gender equality being used as a disguise for authoritarianism in Rwanda, gender equality may still lead to development even if it does not lead to democracy. The thesis comes to the conclusion that  two factors in particular have contributed to the progress on gender-sensitive development. First, the specific situation in post-genocide Rwanda where the population consisted of 70 percent women   and the fact that women took on traditionally male roles in politics and economics. They also created the Forum of Women Parliamentarians [Forum des Femmes Rwandaises Parlementaires] (FFRP) which focused on mainstreaming gender equality into Rwandan politics and promoting women’s rights. Second, the determination of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) and President Paul Kagame to include women and promote women’s rights. These factors both play a part in the great progress Rwanda has faced when it comes to gender-sensitive development. While the thesis suggest that the political process and inclusion of women in the Rwandan parliament is an important part in this progress it does not fully isolate the causality nor ignore that other factors might also have affected the outcomes. Hence, further research would have to be made to identify the mechanisms which has had the most effect for the development in Rwanda.

Women and climate change adaptation : A qualitative research of a gender perspective on climate change adaptation for national authorities in Sweden / Kvinnor och klimatanpassning : En kvalitativ studie av ett könsperspektiv i klimatanpassning för nationella myndigheter i Sverige

Lidsell, Karolina January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate if, and how, national authorities integrate a gender perspective into climate change adaptation in Sweden. The study was completed by using qualitative text analysis and content analysis of documents and reports, of two chosen national authorities currently active in the Swedish society. Particularly Yvonne Hirdmans gender system were used as a theoretical framework. The result of the study reveals that national authorities mention gender as an important aspect to climate change, and an important factor of vulnerability in any outcome of a climate disaster. It is also revealed that a gender perspective on climate change adaptation could enlighten the differences between how men and women are affected by climate change, as well as providing solutions to prevent women’s vulnerability in future extreme weather events. A conclusion of the study is that the authorities analysed do integrate a gender perspective in their climate change adaptation work. However, the overall lack of material of a gender perspective on climate change makes it clear that a gender perspective is not fully integrated among national authorities currently active in Sweden.
