Imaging China through the Olympics: Government Publicity and Journalism

Chinese propaganda nowadays is focused on producing soft-sell messages international consumption instead of hard-core propaganda of agitation. emphasis on "image design" as Jiang Zemin coined it, rather than on propagation of Communist ideals. This shift from the past is brought government's new publicity strategy masterminded by Deng Xiaoping. strategy Chinese media have been enlisted in the ideological construction national images. Image construction for the nation-state has become the Chinese government and its news media in terms of international communication. This shift is symbolic of the rapid changes taking place in China. I draw Andrew Wernick's notion of "promotional culture" (1991) to describe changes, and in particular, their impact on government publicity, domestic reporting, and international journalism in China. I argue that a form of "promotional culture" has made a positive impact on government publicity as much on international journalism in China. The shift of focus in propaganda more of a government initiative than a spontaneous pursuit of international journalism in China. The latter still practices government scripts rather creative in form and diversified in content as is domestic reporting. This examines government publicity materials and news media reports concerning Beijing's Olympic campaign to reveal this extension of promotional government publicity and its implications for Chinese journalism.

Thesis(M.A. (Communication Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / This study explored the impact of organisational culture on integrated communication (IC) at the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) in Polokwane, South Africa. Martin and Niemann-Struweg (2015), argued that top management in organisations poorly understood IC. This study investigates if the same applies to the GCIS in Polokwane. The study adopted a qualitative approach and made use of individual interviews and content analysis in order to collect data, which was then analysed by means of thematic analysis. The study used both the General Systems Theory (Bertalanffy, 1968) and the Organising Theory (Weick, 1989) as its theoretical framework. The findings suggested that organisational culture at the GCIS was shaped by both employee behaviour and organisational activities. The study found that information sharing was poorly implemented by the GCIS, which meant that, information contained in organisational documents differed from the perceptions shared by the employees. Measures to improve both the sharing of information and the perception of this information have been provided in the recommendations / National Research Foundation (NRF)

Managers' perceptions of the practice of public relations in the Institute of Public Administration, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

This study examined the perception of managers in the Institute of Public Administration (IPA), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia as to the way public relations is practiced within Saudi Arabia based on a comparison with Grunig's four models of public relations. Out of a population of 38 directors and director generals, 30 participated in a personal interview for a 79 percent response rate.A Q-sort analysis revealed two perceptions of public relations performance in the Institute. Perceptions differed based on educational experience, and managerial levels. Top managers with Ph.Ds tended to view performance as related to Grunig's Press Agentry and One-Way Information models. Fewer level employees saw performance related to the Two-Way Asymmetrical and Symmetrical models. The researcher concluded that the more higher educated level managers had a better understanding of the reality of performance of public relations in IPA. Main attitudes from the sorts of the participants showing a significantly and different attitude in how directors generals and directors perceived public relations was being practiced in the IPA.
