Drivers of green shipping practices adoption and impact on organisational performance

Aluko, Oluwakayode A. January 2017 (has links)
Green Shipping Practices (GSPs) are a new and increasing trend in the shipping industry. This appears to be a response of the shipping industry to the increasing demand for sustainability in this industry sector. While these practices are gradually becoming acceptable, it is unclear what motivates shipping firms to engage in these practices. This research explored four theoretical perspectives to identify what theory adequately explains the adoption of GSPs and the impact on organisational performance. Through robust literature review, data collection and analysis the conceptualization and definition of GSPs (Lai et al, 2011) is validated. This research through industry case study fills the existing void in literature by identifying what factors influence the adoption of GSPs and how this affects organizational performance. This research adopted a case study approach to exploring the subject area. This is because the research area is still very new and there is little data and literature in this area. The findings suggest that GSPs adoption is largely driven by coercive influences. The research identified factors that influence GSPs adoption classifying them as drivers and enhancers. The research also identified the impact of GSPs on organisational performance classifying the impact as perceived benefits and constraints. The theoretical contribution of this research amongst others include the identification of Institutional theory as plausible explanation for GSPs adoption. Provides adequate explanation to GSPs adoption. Furthermore, this theory is extended to include the influence of moral conviction/values. The research also makes methodological contribution having made use of a qualitative approach in contrast to the prevailing quantitative approach used in similar studies.

This study analyzes the green practices in the agricultural supply chains of rice and peach, and examines their relationships with various categories and dimensions in the context of sustainable supply chain management/supply chains. The main objective of this study is to propose a model to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of green practices in agri-food supply chains. Existing theoretical research classifies green practices into 21 categories, which are grouped within three dimensions—strategy, innovation, and operations. Based on a systematic review of the literature, five hypotheses were proposed in this study, three of which associate the dimensions with competitiveness. On the other hand, the remaining two hypotheses take into consideration the relationships of reputation and result with competitiveness. A quantitative survey was conducted on 92 companies involved in the rice and peach supply chains. Factorial analysis was used to evaluate the reliability and validity of the constructs. The hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. The results were as follows: (i) no relationship was found between Strategy and Competitiveness; (ii) Innovation was positively associated with Competitiveness; (iii) the Operations dimension was strongly and positively associated with Competitiveness; and (iv) Result and Reputation were strongly and positively associated with Competitiveness. This research contributes to the literature by proposing a model that allows for the evaluation of green practices in rice and peach supply chains. In addition, the study conceptually and empirically examines the relationship between green practices and competitiveness of the (agricultural) supply chain” would read better here.

A Study On Employee’s Intention To Adopt Green Practices At The Workplace In The Context Of The Hotel Industry

Shahron, Syairah A.B. January 2019 (has links)
This study aims to examine the effect of organisational commitment and employee’s pro-environmental behaviour at home on their intention to adopt green practices at the workplace in the context of hotel industry, by taking the theory of planned behaviour as a conceptual framework. Hotel employees play a critical role that affects customers' experiences, which then affects the overall hotel performance. However, the mechanism that affects their behavioural intention has yet to be investigated properly. Thus, a survey was conducted to collect the data from employees working in green and non-green hotels in Malaysia. Overall, there were 407 responses received, which represented a response rate of 55.75 percent. Then, a set of hypotheses was tested using the structural equation modelling. The empirical results indicate that organisational commitments have a positive effect on the attitude for engaging in a green behaviour and subjective norm, which in turn influenced employees’ intention to adopt green practices at work. Meanwhile, employees’ pro environmental behaviour at home has an indirect impact on employee’s intention to adopt green practices in the workplace through their attitude for engaging in a green behaviour, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control. The findings lead to a theoretical contribution by incorporating another theory into the theory of planned behaviour, which is the social bond theory through organisational commitment and spill-over effect through pro environmental behaviour at home. Subsequently, a practical recommendation from this research is attainable to policy makers and hotel providers in order for them to understand and increase employees’ willingness to adopt green practices at the workplace. / The full text will be available at the end of the embargo: 15th Dec 2026
