Fostering Learning Communities in the First-Year Composition Classroom: An Exploration of Group Conferencing as a Response StrategyLudewig, Ashley Marie 01 December 2012 (has links)
Recent research has suggested that building personal relationships with students and establishing "learning communities" may be one way to encourage students to persist in their studies beyond the first year. Because many institutions require students to complete one or more writing courses early in their careers, first-year composition instructors have the opportunity to interact with students as they first attempt to assimilate into the academic culture. Response activities--one of the key ways writing instructors interact with their students and ask their students to engage with one another--can be a be a way to both facilitate effective revision and foster a sense of community among students. Group conferencing, defined in this study as a meeting between an instructor and a small group of students in which the participants receive feedback on drafts from their group members and instructor simultaneously, is a promising strategy for achieving those goals effectively and efficiently. The purpose of this study was to use a teacher research/participant-observer methodology to examine group conferencing more expansively and thoroughly than previous researchers and depicting a broader range of the behaviors that characterized the conferences and including the students' perception of the activity. In order to achieve these aims, a group of eighteen first-year composition students participated in individual conferences, in-class peer response, and group conferences and completed reflective assignments about each activity's effectiveness. Recordings of the group conferences were reviewed for significant behavioral patterns and the students' written responses were analyzed for indications of positive and negative reactions to group conferencing. The results included many behaviors described by previous researchers as well as several additional behavioral patterns that indicated the activity could be an effective and unique feedback experience. Most notably, working side-by-side with the instructor seemed to enhance the quality of feedback the students were able to offer one another because the instructor was able to demonstrate appropriate response techniques, prompt for more detailed responses from the students, and reinforce the students' helpful contributions. The students' written responses indicated that they saw value in group conferencing and, in some cases, came to prefer it over other feedback activities. Further, the findings of this study suggest that group conferencing may provide opportunities for community-building not afforded by other response strategies.

Re-imagining family group conferencing 'outcomes'Mitchell, Mary January 2018 (has links)
Family Group Conferencing (FGC) is a family led decision-making approach where practical plans are made by the family to keep children safe and improve their quality of life. FGC has attracted worldwide interest from policymakers, researchers and practitioners for its potential to: involve families in the decision-making process in child and families social work; keeping children safe within a culture of co-operation between the state and families. There is significant empirical research about the impact of the FGC process on families, and its immediate outcomes but less is known about outcomes in the longer-term. This thesis reports on the findings of a retrospective qualitative study, which sought to understand the contribution FGC makes to longer-term outcomes for looked after children at risk of being accommodated, and their families. Eleven FGC examples were studied across five local government areas in Scotland. Each example includes the perspective of different stakeholders in the process including: looked after children, their parents and extended family (n=32), and professionals (n=28) involved with them. Criteria for case selection included: the child and family had originally been referred to FGC service because the family social worker considered the child was at risk of being accommodated; the stages of FGC had been achieved and a family meeting had taken place at least one year prior to the data being collected; the age of the child who was the focus of the meeting was over eight years old wherever possible; and the core family members were prepared to be involved in the study. Individual, joint or group interviews were conducted to provide multi-dimensional perspectives of the FGC phenomena. FGC service documents (n=94) were also analysed, providing data of social activity that occurred prior to the study. This study challenges current outcome focused paradigms, arguing for a more complex and nuanced understanding of outcomes in child welfare, where the child and family,alongside professionals,are valued in the identification and measurement of outcomes. Evidence from this study highlights the need to accept two sets of outcomes when considering FGC contribution: personal and professional. The identification of outcomes in this manner supports three interconnected issues argued throughout the thesis in relation to contribution. Firstly, process matters to the service user and his/her experience of the service and opinion of outcomes. Secondly, what professionals do and how they do it is important to the outcomes of families requiring support -relationships and practice are therefore central concerns in understanding how and why families achieve (or not) longer-term outcomes. Finally, who defines outcomes and to what purpose is significant when conceptualising outcomes. The study draws on empowerment, recognition and partnership theories to better understand FGCs contribution to longer-term outcomes for children and families. The study found the FGC process contributed towards building service users' capacities to reflect on their own and acknowledge others' experiences and situations. Feelings of increased confidence, self-respect and self-esteem, derived from the FGC process, contributed towards improved social relations and a sense of control over their own lives. This increased capacity can support family members to manage future crises and conflict if they arise. FGC offers professional and service users an opportunity to reframe unhelpful attitudes towards each other. In the longer term this can contribute towards families reduced need for social work services and/or improved working relationships between social work and families. This study has significance for all professionals working with looked after children and their families; contributes to the theoretical knowledge applied in social work practice; and is applicable when considering the implementation and impact of child welfare policy in Scotland and internationally.

Experiences with family group decision making in rural OntarioSherwin, Carrie-Lynn 26 August 2010 (has links)
This thesis explores the alternative dispute resolution method of family group decision making that is used in child welfare in Ontario. Using a qualitative case study, my research sought to answer the question: What are the experiences of caregivers who have participated in family group decision making in the District of Algoma? I examined the legislative framework, policy directive and guiding policies surrounding the use of FGDM in child welfare in the District of Algoma in rural Ontario. I also collected data through interviews with five participants and transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. The themes that emerged relate to the process of FGDM empowering families, the outcomes for children, and the ability for families to implement and maintain long-term plans for children. These themes and sub themes are discussed along with the implications for policy and practice and directions for future research.

The application of family group conferencing as a child justice intervention in South AfricaRoy, Tarryn Jane 03 July 2020 (has links)
Abstract in English, Zulu and Sotho / The aim of this study is to consider the application of family group conferencing (FGC) as child justice intervention for children in conflict with the law. An exploratory qualitative approach was followed to provide insight into the perceptions of experts with regards to the suitability of FGC for South Africa and for children, as well as the current application of, and potential context and scope for the application of FGC as a South African justice intervention.
Semi-structured interviews were used as the data collection tool. Accordingly, experts from diverse disciplines, to wit social work, psychology, criminology, law, and education (and sub-speciality in FGC and restorative justice), were interviewed telephonically, face to face or via video chat. The sample was collected using purposive sampling through perusal of research articles and academic electronic sites, as well as snowball sampling whereby potential participants were identified.
The findings show that FGC is an ideal intervention within the South African criminal justice context, and more particularly for child justice. The inclusion of family was noted as specifically important in dealing with children, and within an Afrocentric, Ubuntu-laden, socio-cultural environment. Furthermore, the suitability of FGC to the South African child justice context was linked to victim support and inclusivity, reconciliation aims, cultural flexibility, and ability to support offenders yet hold them accountable without criminalisation.
Findings reiterated that FGC is inclusive of support persons, whilst Victim-Offender Mediation (VOM) is not. Resultantly, and with due consideration for the importance of support persons in child related interventions, the necessity of an amendment to the Child Justice Act 75 of 2008 (CJA) - pertaining specifically to VOM - is advocated. Provisions for the implementation of FGC in a child appropriate manner were recommended, namely, adequate preparation; age, needs, and context consideration; maintenance of safety and respect of all parties; and adequate facilitation.
The findings regarding the current application of FGC as a child justice intervention in South Africa evinced that it is rarely implemented due to a lack of funding and resources, hesitancy of criminal justice professionals, and a decrease in diversion referrals due to a lack of knowledge and poor performance of the South African Police Services (SAPS).
With the aim of extending and promoting FGC, findings noted the necessity for awareness and educational campaigns for both community and criminal justice persons; a multi-dimensional approach whereby various disciplines, societal sectors, government, and civil society work collaboratively; and lastly the importance of the launch of South African Restorative Justice Accreditation Board (SARJAB), an accreditation board for restorative justice practitioners was noted.
