Effects of PIX and PREP on Short Staple Cotton, Bonita, Graham County

The 1985 and 1986 Cotton Reports have the same publication and P-Series numbers. / Four different treatments of PIX were evaluated with and without PREP on short staple cotton on two locations in the southern part of Graham county above the 4000 foot level. PIX caused significant decreases in plant height. The effect of the PIX treatments on yield, even though not significant, varied with the robustness of the cotton plants. PREP caused significant increases in maturity with no changes in yield on both locations.

The 1985 and 1986 Cotton Reports have the same publication and P-Series numbers. / Use of a September 13 application of Prep reduced squares 88 percent and 3/4 inch to 7/8 inch diameter bolls 33 percent as available host material for boll weevils and pink bollworms. Approximately 50 percent of retained bolls increased in size by October 15. This treatment permitted single-harvest by October 3 with a loss of 64 pounds of lint per acre when compared to traditional double harvest. Value of yield difference was approximately equal to the cost of second machine harvest.

Six treatments were included in the experiment which varied application timing and frequency. No significant differences in yield were observed.

Treatments included: 1)standard fertilization recommended for the farm, 2)no added fertilizers and 3)a treatment schedule prescribed by BioHumaNetics. No statistically significant differences were detected.

The 1985 and 1986 Cotton Reports have the same publication and P-Series numbers. / Effects of 5 rates of PREP and 2 application dates of PIX were evaluated on long staple (S-6) and short staple (DP 90) cotton. Generally, crop maturity increased linearly with increasing rates of PREP. Some yield trends were seen with PREP applications. Timing of PIX application is important. Too early applications shorten plants but may slightly decrease yields; too late applications have very little effect.

The 1985 and 1986 Cotton Reports have the same publication and P-Series numbers. / The experimental plant regulator XE-1019, a product of Chevron Chemical Company, was applied to short staple cotton at the University of Arizona Marana Agricultural Center in 1985. Plant height was modified by the chemical due to greatly shortened internode length. The 1.0 lb. a.i. XE-1019 per acre rate applied before bloom yielded significantly less than the other treatments at final harvest. Data collected from eight harvests through the season from sub-plots resulted in significant yield differences from the second through the sixth harvest dates.

Eight treatments combined the two factors of timing and tank mix. The results showed no significant difference in yield between treatments.

Accumulating evidence indicates that chemopreventive agents like soybean isoflavone genistein could potentiate the antitumor effect of chemotherapeutic drugs both in vivo and in vitro. The mechanistic basis of this augmentation effect by genistein remains to be fully elucidated. / In this study, we demonstrated while low-concentration ethanol stressed cancer cells could recover, the presence of genistein promoted the cell death of stressed cancer cells that displayed apoptotic features. In HeLa cells, quantitative real-time PCR revealed the up-regulation of anti-apoptotic genes MDM2 and XIAP during the recovery process, and genistein suppressed their expression. The application of genistein, MDM2 inhibitor and XIAP inhibitor to the recovering HeLa cells caused persistent caspase activity and enhanced cell death. However, the death-promoting effect of genistein was not rescued by caspase inhibitor. Flow cytometry study indicated that genistein treatment could lead to persistent phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization and necrotic events in the recovering HeLa cells. Caspase activity inhibition shifted the major effect of genistein to secondary necrosis. / These results suggested two possible mechanisms through which genistein promoted cell death in stressed HeLa cells. Genistein could maintain the existing apoptotic signal to enhance apoptotic cell death. It could also disrupt the recovering process in caspase-independent manner, which lead to secondary necrosis.
