The aim of the work was to evaluate the effect that the temperature of drying has on the contents and composition of the essential oils of guaco and mint-common, and also a coumarin of guaco. The temperatures used were ambient temperature and air heated to 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 oC. For the drying of medicinal species a dryer containing trays, connected to a liquefied petroleum gas container (LPG) was used. The content and composition of essential oils extracted from each species, were submitted to drying, and afterwards were compared with the value obtained from the fresh control plant. To accomplish the quantification of the content of the essential oil, extraction by a hydro distillation method was done, while the identification of the composition of the oil was accomplished by gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometric (GC-MS). The quantification of this composition was then accomplished by gas chromatography along with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). The extraction of coumarin was accomplished by a heating method in a double-boiler at 65 oC, and the identification and quantification were achieved by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). From the obtained results one is able to conclude that for adequate drying of guaco and mint-common the air temperature must be equal to 50 oC. / Tese importada do Alexandria
