Pregnancy pesticide exposures, birth defects and child health outcomes in the Ontario Farm Family Health Study

Weselak, Mandy January 2004 (has links)
The use of pesticides has served to enhance the economies and health of nations around the world by amplifying crop production and reducing crop loss. At the same time, studies have linked pre- and post-natal pesticide exposures to certain childhood cancers, neurological deficits, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. We explored the relationship between parental pesticide exposure during the pre-conception (3 months prior to conception) and post-conception (first trimester, entire pregnancy period) periods on specific child health outcomes. Our results suggest that pre-conception exposure to cyanazine and dicamba increase the risk of birth defects in male offspring. There is also evidence suggesting that hearing problems and allergies or hayfever are more common in male offspring who are exposed to pesticides during pregnancy. However, given the limited research in this area and the self-reported nature of the exposure and outcomes in this study, the present findings should be considered primarily as hypothesis generating.

The relationship of stress to bone loss in postmenopausal women

Adler, Carole Neiss, Adler, Carole Neiss January 2000 (has links)
The objective of this research is to establish the relationship between stress and bone loss, and to determine to what extent it can be mediated by changes in individual perceptions and behavior. It utilizes the results of a sixteen year longitudinal osteoporosis study and is augmented by extensive in-home interviews to assess pertinent psychosocial and health regime factors. The salience of the mind-body-spirit experience is applied to the topic of osteoporosis, a cogent and immediate concern for all women. As a chronic condition of aging, the impact of osteoporosis on the morbidity and mortality of women has long been a concern of health practitioners, anthropologists, and epidemiologists. It presents a formidable threat to quality of life for postmenopausal women. This paper has been developed to explore the possibility that life changes, adjustments and stressors, might have a deleterious effect on bone density in aging women. The attempt to analyze whether bone loss accelerated under stress could not be unequivocally determined. In the process of interview and qualitative analysis it was revealed that the personal strengths of the subjects including positive attitudes, hardiness, and coping styles may well have buffered such losses. In this population, bone loss clearly associated with aging was not as clearly amenable to interventions by the subjects in terms of health and lifestyle behaviors as it appeared to be when bone density changes were not significantly attached to age.

Parental influences on adolescent sexual decision making

Andres, Shandi D. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Family Studies and Human Services / Rick J. Scheidt / This M.S. report provides an evaluative review of research on parental influences on adolescent sexual decision-making. Data show that a significant proportion of never-married female and male teens (ages 15-19) have had sexual intercourse at least once. Adolescent decisions on sexuality and possible consequences such as pregnancy or sexually-transmitted diseases may have profound personal and social impacts. Theoretical and empirical domains of parental influence are reviewed, including communication, morality, family structure and context, parental control, as well as the role of media. This review shows that adolescent sexuality has changed over time due to socio-historical factors and that parents continue to have an influence on their children’s decision-making abilities. Implications for applied professionals and researchers are discussed.

Youth-adult relationships within community-based programs: their impact on the development of youth empowerment

Hardman, Alisha M. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Family Studies and Human Services / Karen S. Myers-Bowman / The current study focuses on qualitative data collected from youth and adults in two rural Kansas communities. The focal point of analysis was youth and adults' answers to questions about their experiences working with one another within community-based programs, specifically questions regarding youth's feeling of empowerment within the context of the program. Lerner's theory of developmental contextualism provided a framework for understanding how youth-adult relationships contribute to the development of youth empowerment. Youth voice, a construct related to the youth empowerment literature, appeared in the participants' responses across program sites. Common themes across settings were that teens who had been involved in the program the longest felt especially empowered, that youth became more responsible as a result of participating in the program, and that adults in both program sites fulfilled the six adult roles for youth empowerment that have been established in the research literature. Finally, three constructs significant in the youth development literature (confidence, connection and compassion) emerged as themes in relation to the experiences of the young people in the program. Implications of this study include exploring the impact youth-adult relationships have on adults and investigating how teens as role models or mentors for "littles" impact their feeling of empowerment. Suggestions for replication of this study are also given.

Effet d’une pré-sollicitation maximale isométrique des muscles stabilisateurs sur la coordination intermusculaire lors d’un exercice pluriarticulaire épuisant.

Chicoine, Evelyne 08 1900 (has links)
Introduction: Strategies in order to optimize athlete’s performances are commonly used by coaches and trainers. Post-activation potentiation (PAP), occurring after a pre-activation, is known to be a phenomenon that can lead to an increase in force and power production and thus, performance. The aim of the present study was to describe the effects of a hip stabilizers pre-activation on multi-segment coordination and performance during a fatiguing exercise. Method: Six short-track speed skating athletes (3 males and 3 females; age: 20.2 ± 2.8 years; data reported as mean ± SD) participate in the study were they had to execute 2 sets of 9 blocks of 6 maximal squat jumps with 5 s isometric squats between blocks and 5 min rest between sets without (CON) or with (EXP) a 2x3s unilateral isometric squats against a fixed bar potentiating exercise 5 min before to the first set of 9 blocks intending to target the lower body hip stabilizers, flexors and extensors. Jumping average peak power, EMG amplitude, median frequency, angular velocity and acceleration were measured. The first and last blocks of jumps were recorded for each set. Results: There were no significant difference between conditions, as results showed an overall fatigue state. However, mean frequency showed compensating strategies in left leg muscles in response to fatigue. Conclusion: Hip stabilizers isometric pre-activation did not improve overall performance and coordination on jump squats. However, gluteus maximus and anterior tibialis showed a an improved fatigue resistance in non-dominant leg with pre-activation. Results from this study suggest that pre-activation protocols, while they produce no significant impact on performance, could be relevant for reducing lower-limb movement asymmetry during athlete training and as such, contribute to injury prevention and rehabilitation.
