Magíster en fisiología / Mejorar el rendimiento deportivo constituye un interés constante de entrenadores y deportistas, tanto profesionales como aficionados. Para lograr esto normalmente se propone un entrenamiento específico para cada disciplina y con frecuencia se recomienda la ingesta de elementos nutricionales con poder ergogénico, entre los cuales se encuentran las bebidas energéticas que contienen cafeína, taurina e hidratos de carbono. Éstas han logrado establecerse en el mercado, apoyadas por investigaciones que han demostrado su utilidad para aumentar el estado de vigilia, el rendimiento en deportes intermitentes y también en disciplinas de largo aliento. Sin embargo, los efectos de estos suplementos alimenticios en individuos en reposo no han sido hasta ahora investigados. El propósito de este estudio fue determinar el efecto que tienen dos bebidas energéticas con diferente composición (energy drink y energy shot), sobre diversas variables fisiológicas asociadas al rendimiento físico y la homeostasis del organismo, en sujetos que se encuentran en reposo. Para esto fueron evaluados doce sujetos jóvenes de entre 18 y 28 años, de sexo masculino, sanos y físicamente activos, antes y después de ingerir una de estas bebidas energéticas o una bebida placebo manteniendo reposo en posición supina durante 75 minutos. A todos ellos se les midió a los 15, 30, 45, 60 y 75 minutos después de la ingesta de la bebida, consumo de oxígeno, variabilidad del ritmo cardíaco, presión arterial, glicemia, lactatemia, hematocrito y concentración de proteínas plasmáticas totales, además de parámetros biométricobiométricos, tales como peso, estatura, pliegues cutáneos y porcentaje de grasa corporal. Después de la ingesta de energy drink, se observaron diferencias significativas en los cambios producidos en la frecuencia cardíaca, presión arterial sistólica, glicemia, lactatemia, concentración de proteínas plasmáticas totales, consumo de oxígeno y en la variabilidad del ritmo cardíaco, con respecto a los cambios producidos por la ingesta de energy shot o después de beber placebo. Estos cambios sugieren un incremento en el metabolismo energético en reposo y un aumento del trabajo del corazón. / Improving sport performance is a constant interest for professional or amateur athletes and coaches. Normally a specific training plan is developed for each discipline to achieve this and it is frequently recommended the intake of nutritional elements with ergogenic power. For example, energy beverages which composition includes caffeine, taurine and carbohydrates. These types of drinks had penetrated in the market with the support of studies, demonstrating their utility in increasing the vigil state and improving performance in intermittent and endurance sports. However, the effects of these nutritional supplements had not been yet studied for subjects in rest. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of two energy beverages with different compositions (energy drink and energy shot), on several physiological variables, which are associated with physical performance and organism homeostasis, upon subjects in rest. Twelve male, healthy and physically active subjects between 18- 28 years old, were evaluated, before and after drinking one of these drinks or a placebo, in supine position maintaining rest for 75 minutes. Everyone was measured at 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 minutes after the drink intake. The variables measured were oxygen consumption, heart rate variability, blood pressure, glycemia, blood lactate, hematocrit, and the concentration of total plasma proteins. Furthermore, biometric parameters were measured, such as weight, height, skinfolds and body fat percentage. After the intake of the energy drink significant differences were found in the heart rate, systolic blood pressure, glycemia, blood lactate, concentration of total plasma proteins, oxygen consumption and heart rate variability in comparison to the changes found after the intake of the energy shot and placebo. These changes suggest an increase in basal metabolism rate and cardiac output.
