Validation of the DRACO Particle-in-Cell Code using Busek 200W Hall Thruster Experimental Data

This thesis discusses the recent developments to the electric propulsion plume code DRACO as well as a validation and sensitivity analysis of the code using data from an AFRL experiment using a Busek 200 W Hall Thruster. DRACO is a PIC code that models particles kinematically while using finite differences schemes to solve the electric potential and field. The DRACO code has been recently modified to improve simulation results, functionality and performance. A particle source has been added that uses the Hall Thruster device code HPHall as input for a source to model Hall Thrusters. The code is now also capable of using a non-uniform mesh that uses any combination of uniform, linear and exponential stretching schemes in any of the three directions. A stretched mesh can be used to refine simulation results in certain areas, such as the exit of a thruster, or improve performance by reducing the number of cells in a mesh. Finally, DRACO now has the capability of using a DSMC collision scheme as well as performing recombination collisions. A sensitivity analysis of the newly upgraded DRACO code was performed to test the new functionalities of the code as well as validate the code using experimental data gathered at AFRL using a Busek 200 W Hall Thruster. A simulation was created that attempts to numerically recreate the AFRL experiment and the validation is performed by comparing the plasma potential, polytropic temperature, ion number density of the thruster plume as well as Faraday and ExB probe results. The study compares the newly developed HPHall source with older source models and also compares the variations of the HPHall source. The field solver and collision model used are also compared to determine how to achieve the best results using the DRACO code. Finally, both uniform and non-uniform meshes are tested to determine if a non-uniform mesh can be properly implemented to improve simulation results and performance. The results from the validation and sensitivity study show that the DRACO code can be used to recreate a vacuum chamber simulation using a Hall Thruster. The best results occur when the newly developed HPHall source is used with a MCC collision scheme using a projected background neutral density and CEX collision tracking. A stretched mesh was tested and proved results that are as accurate as a uniform mesh, if not more accurate in locations of high mesh refinement. / Master of Science

Divergent Plume Reduction of a High-Efficiency Multistage Plasma Thruster

High Efficiency Multistage Plasma Thrusters (HEMPTs) are a relatively new form of electric propulsion that show promise for use on a variety of missions and have several advantages over their older EP competitors. One such advantage is their long predicted lifetime and minimal wall erosion due to a unique periodic permanent magnet system. A laboratory HEMPT was built and donated by JPL for testing at Cal Poly. Previous work was done to characterize the performance of this thruster and it was found to exhibit a large plume divergence, resulting in decreased thrust and specific impulse. This thesis explores the design and application of a magnetic shield to modify the thruster’s magnetic field to force more ion current towards the centerline. A previous Cal Poly thesis explored the same concept, and that work is continued and furthered here. The previous thesis tested a shield which increased centerline current but decreased performance. A new shield design which should avoid this performance decrease is studied here. Magnetic modelling of the thruster was performed using COMSOL. This model was verified using guassmeters to measure the field strength at many discrete points within and near the HEMPT, with a focus on the ionization channel and exit plane. A shield design which should significantly reduce the radial field strength at the exit plane without affecting the ionization channel field was modelled and implemented. The HEMPT was tested in a vacuum chamber with and without the shield to characterize any change to performance characteristics. Data were collected using a nude Faraday probe and retarding potential analyzer. The data show a significant increase in centerline current with the application of the shield, but due to RPA malfunction and thruster failure the actual change in performance could not be concluded. The unshielded HEMPT was characterized, however, and was found to produce 12.1 +/- 1.3 mN of thrust with a specific impulse of 1361 +/- 147s. The thruster operated with a total efficiency of 10.63 +/- 3.66%, an efficiency much lower than expected. A large contributor to this low efficiency is likely the use of argon in place of xenon. Its lower mass and higher ionization energy make it a less efficient propellant choice. Further, the thruster is prone to overheating, indicating that significant thermal losses are present in this design.

Les propulseurs de Hall sont l’une des techniques de propulsion fusée par plasma les plus utilisés. Ils possèdent une impulsion spécifique moyenne et un haut rapport poussé sur puissance qui les rend idéal pour une grande partie des applications commerciales et scientifiques. Une de leurs limitations principales est l’érosion des parois du propulseur par le plasma qui réduit leur durée de vie. La topologie dite “d’écrantage magnétique” est une solution proposée pour prolonger cette durée de vie. Elle est ici appliquée à un petit propulseur de Hall de 200W. Dans cette thèse les règles de mise à l’échelle pour les propulseurs de Hall de la gamme de 100 à 200W sont testées expérimentalement. Un propulseur écranté de 200W est comparé avec un propulseur standard similaire. Le comportement des ions dans ces deux moteurs est extrêmement différent. Des mesures de performance ont été réalisées avec des parois en BN-SiO2 et graphite. Le courant de décharge augmente de 25% avec le graphite dans le propulseur non-écranté. Le résultat et un rendement maximum de 38% avec le nitrure de bore mais de seulement 31% pour le graphite. Le propulseur écranté quant à lui n’atteint que 25% de rendement quel que soit le matériau.Cette baisse de performance dans les petits moteurs écrantés peut être attribuée à un mauvais rendement d’utilisation de l’ergol. Analyses des résultats expérimentaux ainsi que la conduite de simulations suggèrent que cela est dû au fait que la zone d’ionisation ne couvre pas l’ensemble du canal de décharge. Un nouveau design pour un petit propulseur de Hall écranté est proposé. / Hall thrusters are one of the most used rocket electric propulsion technology. They combine moderate specific impulse with high thrust to power ratio which makes them ideal for a wide range of practical commercial and scientific applications. One of their limitations is the erosion of the thruster walls which reduces their lifespan.The magnetic shielding topology is a proposed solution to prolong the lifespan. It is implemented on a small200W Hall thruster.In this thesis the scaling of classical unshielded Hall thrusters down to 200 and 100W is discussed. A 200W low power magnetically shielded Hall thruster is compared with an identically sized unshielded one. The ion behavior inside the thruster is measured and significant differences are found across the discharge channel.Both thrusters are tested with classical BN-SiO2 and graphite walls. The magnetically shielded thruster is not sensitive to the material change while the discharge current increase by 25% in the unshielded one. The result is a maximum efficiency of 38% for boron nitride in the unshielded thruster but only 31% with graphite.The shielded thruster achieves a significantly lower efficiency with only 25% efficiency with both materials.Analysis of the experimental results as well as simulations of the thrusters reveal that the performance difference is mostly caused by low propellant utilization. This low propellant utilization comes from the fact that the ionization region doesn’t cover all of the discharge channel. A new magnetically shielded thruster is designed to solve this issue.

Particle-in-cell simulations of electron dynamics in low pressure discharges with magnetic fields

In modern low pressure plasma discharges, the electron mean free path often exceeds the device dimensions. Under such conditions the electron velocity distribution function may significantly deviate from Maxwellian, which strongly affects the discharge properties. The description of such plasmas has to be kinetic and often requires the use of numerical methods. This thesis presents the study of kinetic effects in inductively coupled plasmas and Hall thrusters carried out by means of particle-in-cell simulations. The important result and the essential part of the research is the development of particle-in-cell codes. <p>An advective electromagnetic 1d3v particle-in-cell code is developed for modelling the inductively coupled plasmas. An electrostatic direct implicit 1d3v particle-in-cell code EDIPIC is developed for plane geometry simulations of Hall thruster plasmas. The EDIPIC code includes several physical effects important for Hall thrusters: collisions with neutral atoms, turbulence, and secondary electron emission. In addition, the narrow sheath regions crucial for plasma-wall interaction are resolved in simulations. The code is parallelized to achieve fast run times. <p>Inductively coupled plasmas sustained by the external RF electromagnetic field are widely used in material processing reactors and electrodeless lighting sources. In a low pressure inductive discharge, the collisionless electron motion strongly affects the absorption of the external electromagnetic waves and, via the ponderomotive force, the density profile. The linear theory of the anomalous skin effect based on the linear electron trajectories predicts a strong decrease of the ponderomotive force for warm plasmas. Particle-in-cell simulations show that the nonlinear modification of electron trajectories by the RF magnetic field partially compensates the effects of electron thermal motion. As a result, the ponderomotive force in warm collisionless plasmas is stronger than predicted by linear kinetic theory. <p>Hall thrusters, where plasma is maintained by the DC electric field crossed with the stationary magnetic field, are efficient low-thrust devices for spacecraft propulsion. The energy exchange between the plasma and the wall in Hall thrusters is enhanced by the secondary electron emission, which strongly affects electron temperature and, subsequently, thruster operation. Particle-in-cell simulations show that the effect of secondary electron emission on electron cooling in Hall thrusters is quite different from predictions of previous fluid studies. Collisionless electron motion results in a strongly anisotropic, nonmonotonic electron velocity distribution function, which is depleted in the loss cone, subsequently reducing the electron wall losses compared to Maxwellian plasmas. Secondary electrons form two beams propagating between the walls of a thruster channel in opposite radial directions. The secondary electron beams acquire additional energy in the crossed external electric and magnetic fields. The energy increment depends on both the field magnitudes and the electron flight time between the walls. <p>A new model of secondary electron emission in a bounded plasma slab, allowing for emission due to the counter-propagating secondary electron beams, is developed. It is shown that in bounded plasmas the average energy of plasma bulk electrons is far less important for the space charge saturation of the sheath than it is in purely Maxwellian plasmas. A new regime with relaxation oscillations of the sheath has been identified in simulations. Recent experimental studies of Hall thrusters indirectly support the simulation results with respect to the electron temperature saturation and the channel width effect on the thruster discharge.

Modèles cinétiques et caractérisation expérimentale des fluctuations électrostatiques dans un propulseur à effet Hall / Kinetic modeling and experimental characterization of electrostatic fluctuations in a Hall thruster

L'étude des phénomènes turbulents se développant en sortie du propulseur de Hall est nécessaire pour pouvoir modéliser le transport anormal (par opposition au transport diffusif) des électrons à travers les lignes de champ magnétique. Les relations de dispersion de deux instabilités pouvant être responsables de ce transport ont été mesurées à des échelles millimétriques à l'aide du diagnostic de diffusion collective de la lumière. Ce travail de thèse s'attache à en donner une description aussi bien théorique qu'expérimentale, pierre à l'édifice de la compréhension du transport dans le propulseur. Une instabilité se propageant majoritairement dans la direction azimutale du propulseur y est caractérisée comme étant l'instabilité de dérive électronique ExB et un modèle analytique décrivant la fréquence expérimentale y est dérivé et validé. De plus, le manuscrit présente une méthode de déconvolution du signal de la diffusion collective de la fonction d'appareil pour ce mode. Une fois déconvoluées, les relations de dispersion expérimentales peuvent être ajustées par la fréquence du modèle analytique, ce qui permet de mesurer expérimentalement et de manière originale la température et la densité électronique dans le jet d'ions énergétiques du plasma du propulseur. Enfin, la seconde instabilité, se développant autour de la direction axiale du propulseur, est caractérisée comme l'instabilité double faisceau entre les ions simplement et doublement chargés du plasma / The study of turbulent phenomena that grow at the exit plane of the Hall thruster is required to modelize the anomalous transport (in contrast to the diffusion transport) of electrons across the magnetic field lines. The dispersion relations of two instabilities that can be responsible for this transport have been mesured at millimetric scales by mean of the collective light scattering diagnostic. The aim of the thesis is to describe them theoretically as well as experimentally, improving the understanding of the Hall thruster transport. In the thesis, an instability that propagates principally azimuthally is caracterized as the ExB electron drift instability and an analytical model that describes the experimental frequency is derived and validated. In addition, the manuscript presents an original method to unfold the signal of the collective scattering diagnostic from the instrumental function of this mode. Once corrected, the experimental dispersion relations can be adjusted by the frequency given by the analytical model, allowing to measure experimentally and in an original way the electron temperature and density in the energetic ion jet of the Hall thruster plasma. The second instability that is mainly propagating in the axial direction is caracterized as the two-stream instability between the simply and doubly charged ions of the plasma

Low–voltage External Discharge Plasma Thruster and Hollow Cathodes Plasma Plume Diagnostics Utilising Electrostatic Probes and Retarding Potential Analyser

The present thesis is the result of a research period at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency, ISAS/JAXA within Funaki Laboratory of the Department of Space Flight Systems that followed the path of plume plasma diagnostics for space electric propulsion drives. During the experimental studies two high-current hollow cathodes and an innovative prototype of a low-voltage fully external discharge plasma thruster (XPT) had their plasma plumes diagnosed using electrostatic probes and retarding potential analyser (RPA). A Hall thruster and hollow cathode plume is defined as an unmagnetised quasi-neutral plasma which is mainly formed of neutral particles, electrons, singly and doubly charged ions. Plasma diagnostic techniques provide information through practical observations in order to fully understand the dynamics of the aforementioned plume components, the physical processes taking place within the plume and their effects on the spacecraft, for instance. Mastering these aspects of the plasma plume of space electric propulsion drives bolster the design processes, leading to highly efficient devices. Firstly, the introduction provides insights on the fundamental principles of hollow cathodes and Hall thrusters and a brief presentation of the plasma diagnostic techniques used during the research: single and double Langmuir probes, emissive probes and retarding potential analyser. Then, the fundamental plume diagnostics principles are depicted in an exhaustive way, departing from classical plasma kinetic theory, energy distribution functions and ending with an overview on the theory of charge collection by cylindrical probes. Subsequently, peculiarities of various analysis techniques are exposed for the Langmuir probes, emissive probes and RPA, with an emphasis on their strengths and demerits. The experimental setups for the cathodes and XPT plume diagnostic procedures are then outlined. The experimental logic, setup and electrical diagrams as well as a presentation of each probe design and manufacturing details are extensively discussed. The hollow cathodes experimental results are exposed with a discourse that aims of overviewing the difference between the various data analysis methods applied for the raw data. A discussion ensued based on the results in order to effectively identify mechanisms that produced the observed plasma parameters distributions. For the first time, the plume of a fully external discharge plasma thruster was diagnosed utilising double Langmuir probes.  The thesis highlights the main results obtained for the XPT far-field plume plasma diagnostics. The experimental findings for both thruster centreline positions and 2D plume maps for several axial distances away from the anode plate offer a ground basis for future measurements, a comparison term and a database to support ongoing computational codes. The results are discussed and related to the thruster performances data obtained during previous experiments. The thesis includes consistency analyses between the experimental data and the numerical simulation results and the uncertainties in measured plasma parameters associated with each data analysis procedure are evaluated for each data set. Last, the conclusions underline the main aspects of the research and further work on the previously mentioned plasma diagnostic techniques for hollow cathodes and XPT is suggested. / La présente thèse est le résultat d'une période de recherche à l'Institut des Sciences Spatiales et Astronautiques de l'Agence Spatiale Japonaise, ISAS / JAXA qui a suivi la voie des diagnostics du plasma de la plume de propulseurs électriques spatiaux. Au cours des études expérimentales, deux cathodes creuses à fort courant et un prototype innovant d'un propulseur basse tension à décharge externe de plasma (XPT) avaient leurs faisceaux de plasma diagnostiqués en utilisant des sondes électrostatiques et un analyseur à potentiel retardé. La plume d’un propulseur à effet Hall et d’une cathode creuse est définie comme un plasma quasi-neutre non-magnétisé qui est principalement formé de particules neutres, d’électrons, d’ions monovalents et bivalents. Les techniques de diagnostic du plasma fournissent des informations, via des observations pratiques, afin de bien comprendre la dynamique des composants de la plume mentionnés ci-dessus, les processus physiques qui se déroulent dans la plume et leurs effets sur une sonde spatiale, par exemple. La maîtrise de ces aspects du plasma de la plume généré par les propulseurs électriques spatiaux renforce les processus de conception de ce type de propulsion, ce qui conduit à des dispositifs hautement efficaces. Tout d'abord, l'introduction donne un aperçu sur les principes fondamentaux de cathodes creuses et de propulseurs à effet Hall, et une brève présentation des techniques de diagnostic du plasma utilisées lors de la recherche : sondes de Langmuir simples et doubles, des sondes émissives et d’analyseur à potentiel retardé. La logique expérimentale, les schémas électriques ainsi qu'une présentation de la conception et de la fabrication de chaque sonde sont largement discutés. Les résultats expérimentaux pour les cathodes creuses sont exposés de façon à présenter la différence entre plusieurs méthodes d'analyse de données appliquées aux données brutes. Une discussion s’ensuit, basée sur les résultats afin d'identifier efficacement les mécanismes qui ont produits les propriétés électroniques observées. Pour la première fois, la plume d'un propulseur à décharge externe de plasma a été diagnostiquée en utilisant des sondes de Langmuir doubles. La thèse met en évidence les principaux résultats obtenus pour le diagnostic en champ lointain de la plume-plasma du XPT. Les résultats expérimentaux pour les positions sur l'axe du propulseur et le cartes 2D de la plume pour plusieurs distances axiales loin de l’anode offrent une base pour de futures mesures, un terme de comparaison et une base de données pour appuyer les codes numériques. Les résultats sont discutés et sont rapportés aux données de performances du propulseur obtenus lors des essais précédents. La thèse comprend des analyses de la cohérence entre les données expérimentales et les résultats de simulation numérique, et les incertitudes des paramètres mesurés du plasma associées à chaque procédure d'analyse des données sont évaluées pour chaque ensemble de données. Enfin, les conclusions soulignent les principaux aspects de la recherche et une poursuite des travaux sur les techniques de diagnostic de plasma pour les cathodes creuses et le XPT est suggérée.

Electric field determination and magnetic topology optimization in Hall thrusters / Détermination du champ électrique et optimisation de la topologie magnétique dans les propulseurs de Hall

La propulsion électrique est à un tournant de son histoire. La récente mise en oeuvre de satellites de télécommunication "tout-électrique" se traduit par l’ouverture d’un nouveau marché, et par une évolution des besoins opérationnels. L’identification de ces nouvelles missions nécessite l’amélioration des performances de nos moteurs. La première partie de ces travaux rapporte l’utilisation d’un outil de spectroscopie laser destiné à caractériser la distribution en vitesse des ions. Les différentes méthodes de calcul du champ électrique dans les propulseurs de Hall ont été exposées. Deux instabilités ioniques ont été observées et analysées. Les sources d’erreurs liées aux mesures par sondes électrostatiques ont été analysées, et un exemple de sonde plane étudié. Une analyse paramétrique de l’influence des paramètres de champ magnétique sur les performances des propulseurs de Hall a été conduite. Le concept de moteur "sans parois" est présenté. L’identification de ce concept constitue une avancée porteuse de promesses pour l’avenir de la propulsion électrique. / Electric propulsion is facing new challenges. Recently, the launch of "all-electric" satellites has marked the debut of a new era. Going all-electric now appears as an interesting alternative to conventional systems for telecom operators. A laser spectroscopy technique was used during this research to investigate the ion velocity distribution dynamics. The different methods for determining the electric field in Hall thrusters were exposed. Two unstable ion regimes were identified and examined. Measurement uncertainties using electrostatic probes were assessed. Planar probed have been designed and tested. A thorough investigation of the influence of the magnetic field parameters on the performance of Hall thrusters was performed. The wall-less Hall thruster design was presented, and preliminary experiments have revealed its interest for the electric propulsion community.
