The Evolution Of Hate Crimes & Their Representation On StageCortelli, Pietro 01 January 2010 (has links)
My thesis focuses on how true-life events resulting from hate crimes have been theatricalized for the stage. My research discusses hate crimes that have occurred throughout history. My primary research centers on Ragtime (1897-1918), The Diary of Anne Frank (1939-1945) and The Laramie Project (2002), which deal with racism, antiSemitism and homophobia, respectively. My intention is to highlight how theatre impacts the ideas and thoughts of audiences and transforms thinking and points of view forever, as well as impacting cultures and our world. In addition, I discuss the historical measures that led to these events and progression in modern times. Music, art and theater are known as "performing arts" which enrich our lives and leave us feeling complete. They also have the power to influence people and open minds and hearts to different ways of thinking about the world and its people

Section two surveys literature on both Hate Crime Legislation and the training of law enforcement officers. Section three discusses the Anti-Defamation League and FBI data in detail and explains the methods used to test the association between law enforcement training and reporting of hate crime legislation. Findings yield a statistically significant association between law enforcement training and reporting of hate crime legislation.

The aim of this thesis, focusing on the Criminological Aspects of Hate Crime, is to provide a comprehensive analysis of this kind of criminality in the Czech Republic from the criminological point of view. The work is divided into six chapters. The first of which introduces the topic and presents the definition of this kind of criminality and its close connection with extremist criminality. This activity is characterised by hate motivation against a group or an individual because of their real or presumed race, colour, religion, national origin or ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or disability. The chapter also deals with the development of the hate crime concept, typology of criminal activity based on the committed type of crime or motivation and particular criminal acts occurring in the Czech Republic. The second chapter is focused on extremism and illegal activities of the members of this scene which attack the democratic system and are capable of jeopardizing it. In addition, it examines kinds of extremism, related ideologies and the Czech situation. The criminological part of the thesis, starting in the third chapter, begins with the phenomenology of hate crime, presenting the state of this criminality in the Czech Republic, comparing it to the previous years and elaborating on the types...

A critical review of issues in applying restorative justice principles and practices to cases of hate crimeKelly, Terri Lee 01 January 2002 (has links)
A restorative approach to justice focuses on accountability for healing the harm done to victims and communities as a result of criminal acts. Hate crimes are intended to send a threatening message to a particular group of people. There is enough reliable research on restorative justice principles and practices, and on the causes, meaning and impact of hate crimes, to bring together a representative selection of available literature for a critical review. This thesis critically reviews the literature of restorative justice principles and practices, and the literature of hate crime causes, definitions, laws, and typologies of offenders, using as a model Comstock's seven-step Critical Research Method. Findings suggest that congruencies between the two fields of study are primarily found in how activities appropriated to define the fields have increased the ambiguity of the definitions. Further findings suggest that there are important underlying issues of class and power distribution in need of attention in both fields of research. These findings are discussed and suggestions are made for future areas of research.

A Love-Hate Relationship: The Legalization of Same-Sex Marriage and the Number of Reported Anti-LGBT+ Hate Crimes in the United StatesGarrett, Katherine R. January 2023 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Geoffrey Sanzenbacher / Oddly, as acceptance of LGBT+ individuals continues to rise in the United States, the number of reported anti-LGBT+ hate crimes also rises (McCarthy 2022, Author’s calculations from Uniform Crime Reporting data). Could this be the result of a violent backlash against the legalization of same-sex marriage? This paper investigates this love-hate relationship using data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics’s Uniform Crime Reporting system. Utilizing a collection of difference-in- differences regressions, this analysis compares the number of reported anti-LGBT+ hate crimes in a state before and after that state’s legalization of same sex marriage. The results suggest that states have a higher number of reported hate crimes per month after their legalization of same-sex marriage when controlling for population. A placebo regression shows that this effect is not found with other kinds of hate crimes. Two potential explanations for this finding are explored: firstly, that reporting of anti-LGBT+ hate crimes in a state becomes more reliable after that state’s legalization of same-sex marriage or, alternatively, that the number of hate crimes committed against LGBT+ individuals rises. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2023. / Submitted to: Boston College.
