Clinically significant change after cognitive restructuring for adult surviviors of childhood sexual abuseBrandt, Sheldon 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigated the outcome of cognitive restructuring for adult survivors of childhood
sexual abuse in terms of clinically significant change. Twenty-six participants were assessed for
depression, State anxiety, State anger, State guilt and self-esteem before and after 10 weekly
sessions of group Rational-emotive behaviour therapy and at follow-up after 8 weeks. In contrast to
a previous analysis of the data in terms of statistical significance indicating significant
improvements on all variables from pre- to post-treatment, an analysis based on clinically
significant change showed a differentiated treatment effect. Cognitive restructuring was found to be
highly effective in facilitating recovery on measures of anxiety, depression and anger, but less
effective for guilt and self-esteem. Only 3 participants (11.54%) recovered on all five variables,
while 10 participants (38.46%) showed recovery on at least four variables. Relationship to
perpetrator and pre-treatment irrational evaluative beliefs (measured by means of the Survey of
Personal Beliefs) were found to be the best predictors of treatment outcome. A poor response to
treatment was associated with the perpetrator being a close family member and with more Otherdirected
Shoulds, while recovery was associated with the perpetrator being a friend or stranger and
with more Awfulizing, Self-directed Shoulds and Negative Self-worth beliefs. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie studie is die uitkoms van kognitiewe herstrukturering, as behandelingsprosedure VIr
volwasse slagoffers van kindermolesteuring, in terme van kliniese betekenisvolheid ondersoek. Sesen-
gedifferensieerde behandelingseffek.
'n Swak

Validating music therapy and its effectiveness in treating brain disorders: the role of emotions in music and in therapyUnknown Date (has links)
The success of the music therapy profession has been well established, though the healing properties of music are not yet fully understood. Clinical observations show the medicinal value of music therapy; however, it is challenging to quantify music's beneficial effects. Examining music therapy's effectiveness in treating neurological disorders can possibly help to better validate this profession. However, music therapy is a multidisciplinary field, and perhaps we must come to a better understanding of how the various disciplines relate to one another. Music has the power to modulate our emotions. Neurological studies involving music therapy might help to uncover the connection between our emotional states and our physical health. To truly understand the success of music therapy, we must further study the role of emotions in the healing process. Future examinations of the emotional factor in music therapy may hold the key to a better understanding of how music affects us. / by Kristin Renee Hurley. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2008. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. Psico-Oncologia: um estudo com pacientes após o término do tratamento oncológico / Psycho-Oncology: a study of patients after completion of cancer treatmentSantos, Ana Paula Alves Lima 29 November 2011 (has links)
Many people are affected by this illness and there is a tendency for its increasing. However, parallel to the large proportions of cancer incidence, there is the increasing number of people who reach success on cancer treatment. This causes the emergence of a new group: the cancer survivors. We understand a cancer survivor as the patient that hasnt been treated for five years and has no evidence of the disease. The general objective of this research is to discuss the emotional aspects of this group of patients. The sample is constituted by cancer survivors from a public hospital in the city of Aracaju. The data was organized through a semi-structured interview guide that had been previously elaborated. The data was analyzed on a qualitative way, using the content analysis technique. Thus, this research shows that surviving cancer is a complex experience, and it is connected to the way each patient confronts and get adapted to the cure process. Appropriated cure conditions constitute a challenge to survivors once the possibility of the disease return has to be analyzed. The survivor needs to succeed on elaborating the past experience and live with the uncertainty of the future. This study also emphasizes that it is not just a matter of getting the patient cured, but also providing means of resuming to his/her life, and reintegrating him/her into the social environment. In this context, the health care team should include in their treatment plans, actions that goes beyond the clinical aspects of the disease, offering emotional and social support, promoting the improvement of coping skills to deal with their new condition and to get rid of the past, helping survivors to live with the duality inherent in life

The anatomy of human misery and its therapy : a study of miracles and healing in the life of our Lord and in the early church, until the Council of NicaeaHawkridge, John Bernard January 1959 (has links)
This thesis seeks to show that miracles and healing are inseparable from the Messianic task of Jesus Christ; and that in so far as He commissioned His Church to continue that Messianic task, it is reasonable to expect that miracles and healing would continue. The early history of the Church is examined for evidence confirming this expectation, and a question is asked of the contemporary Church.

Addressing difficulties with change, transition and progression in life: HBLUTM as an effective treatment for phobiasSchurian, Mare 22 July 2014 (has links)
Change cannot be denied and it is constantly prevalent in our external and internal worlds. How we adapt to change has an important impact on our lives as it can define the quality of our lives. I, the researcher, am interested in people’s change, how change affects people and how I can help them to progress fast and effectively.
Therefore the aims of this qualitative study are: 1) to introduce an alternative way to view phobias, and to 2) examine the effectiveness of an Energy Psychology method, HBLUTM, in the detection and resolution of phobias in the context of change, transition and/or progression. This study's findings confirm the wide-ranging effect the HBLUTM simple phobia treatment had on the 10 participants and suggests that the HBLUTM simple phobia protocol was successfully implemented to treat all the participants, thereby relieving them of their phobias of change or transition / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Systems theory training as a context for healing : an autoethnographyWichmann, Werner Johann 01 1900 (has links)
The mini-dissertation explains how systems theory provided a healing context
for me in my training as a clinical psychologist over two years. The
emergence of my authentic voice is narrated in an autoethnography (five act
drama) about what happened. The main theoretical bases for the dissertation
are – constructivism to understand the learning and teaching I experienced;
learning as a collaborative endeavour and the emergence of my authentic
voice with help from more skilled others. Systems theory informs the entire
study at every theoretical level. Bowen’s family therapy theory is significant
for the differentiation of the self and his I-position is equated with the
emergence of an authentic voice. Myth, epic narratives, the hero’s journey
amplify my interpretation of the differentiation of self. The raw data for the
qualitative research were observations, interviews, creative writing, photocollage,
a collection of readings, songs and dialogues. The themes emerging
from the autoethnography were about obstructions because of the
authoritarian nature of my upbringing, life and work. These themes lessened
in force in clinical training until my authentic voice emerged in relation to self
and as a clinical psychologist. A recommendation from the dissertation is that
autoethnography provides a good vehicle for reflection and intense interior
scrutiny needed to become a practising clinical psychologist; the
autoethnographical exercise could be used by training clinical psychologists
more extensively on their journey to maturity. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)
