Examining the Relationship Between Parental Sex Education, Religiosity And Sex Positivity In First- And Second-Generation African Immigrants

Phyllis Antwiwaa Agyapong (9735716) 16 December 2020 (has links)

This quantitative study examined the relationship between parental comprehensive sexual and reproductive health communication (SRH), religiosity and sex positivity in first- and second-generation African immigrants. Comprehensive SRH communication was measured by frequency through the Sexual Communication Scale (SCS), religiosity was measured through the Faith Activities in the Home Scale (FAITHS) and sex positivity was measured through the Sex Positivity Scale (SPS). It was hypothesized that there would be a negative relationship between religiosity and sex positivity and a positive relationship between religiosity and sex positivity in first-and second-generation African immigrants. Results indicated that higher levels of religiosity in the participant’s upbringing was significantly associated with higher sex positivity. Additional findings revealed higher instances of SRH communication correlated with higher sex positivity in men and lower sex positivity in women. This study aimed to set a foundation for future studies on first- and second-generation African immigrants as it relates to sexual health.

Mind, Body, Spirit: Muslim Women's Experiences in Therapy

Alia Azmat (11204100) 30 July 2021 (has links)
This dissertation presents in the form of two distinct chapters conceptually related in nature. The first chapter integrates literature from various fields such as indigenous, womanist, and feminist lenses to propose nine principles when working with Muslim women. The purpose of the second chapter is to examine Muslim women’s experiences in therapy at university counseling centers. The study explores women’s experiences from a social determinants of health perspective and a narrative inquiry method—namely, how intrapersonal, interpersonal, institutional, community, and policy factors inform women’s experiences. Qualitative analysis from interviews with six women suggests Muslim women navigate multiple systems which inform their beliefs about health and their experiences in therapy.

Riglyne vir 'n hulpverleningsprogram aan 'n gesin met 'n breinbeseerde kind

Van Wyk, Louis Johannes Jacobus 06 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / In this study an instrument is suggested for implementation by the Educational Psychologist to design a support programme, aimed at handling family members' stress where a child has sustained a brain injury. Attention was paid to the phenomenon "brain injured child" to ascertain demands and needs (physical, cognitive, psychological and emotional). Specific note was taken of the toll on each family member in their observance, experience, assistance and giving· meaning to the child. Reference was made to existing support programmes for such family members from the acute care phase to the final acceptance and readjustment of the family. With this study the need for a continuous support programme and the contents of such a programme was addressed. Using these guidelines the Educational Psychologist will be able to prepare the family for the stress possibilities in dealing with the brain injured child. / Psychology of Education / M. Acceptance, accessibility and utilisation of VCT services by women using contraceptives at City of Johannesburg Municipal clinics

Ndlazi, Bandile Ernest 06 1900 (has links)
Background: The South Africa’s reproductive health policy put more emphasis on dual methods in preventing unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) transmission. Regardless of such policies, the uptake of voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) services remains a personal choice. Aim: The purpose of the study was to determine the accessibility, acceptance and utilisation of VCT services by women on hormonal contraceptives. Methods: About 134 women obtaining hormonal contraceptives were interviewed in a cross-sectional study. Descriptive and logistic regression analysis was applied to analyse the study data. Results: Respondents displayed positive attitudes towards Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) testing. Unavailability and poor access to in-house VCT services was found to be a barrier for use of these services. Conclusion: There’s a need for provider initiated counselling and testing (PICT) strengthening and integration of VCT services into family planning. / Public Health / M.P.H. (Public Health)
