O objetivo deste estudo foi compreender a percepção dos adolescentes da periferia sobre saúde bucal e identificar quais as atitudes, espaços e comportamentos desse grupo etário. Desenvolveu-se uma pesquisa qualitativa com 44 adolescentes de 12 a 17 anos de idade de duas escolas da periferia de Araçatuba/SP. A coleta de dados foi feita por meio de entrevistas semi-estruturada, utilizando um roteiro de perguntas abrangendo enfoque social, afetivo e cognitivo. As entrevistas foram gravadas e posteriormente transcritas fielmente para análise dos dados. Esta foi realizada utilizando a metodologia do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo. Observou-se nos discursos que as atividades de lazer mais referidas foram a prática de esporte ou ficar em casa; os adolescentes consideram a escola um local para promoção de saúde, a estética tem grande importância nessa faixa etária; aliam ter dentes bons ao convívio social - namorar, trabalhar; ter saúde bucal resume-se a ter higiene e dentes limpos. O relato dos entrevistados mostra necessidade de desenvolver atividades onde possam participar ativamente, respeitando suas peculiaridades. / Abstract: Teenage deserves special attention from the family, the school and from the health services because of the peculiarities that turn this phase of life special. The aim of this study was to understand how teenagers from low-income families view oral health and to identify the environment, attitudes and behaviors of this age group. A qualitative survey was carried out with 44 teenagers between 12 and 17 years of age from two public schools in the outskirts of Araçatuba,SP, Brazil. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, using a list of questions involving the social, affective and cognitive points-of-view. The interviews were taped and later faithfully transcribed for the analysis of the data, which was carried out using the Collective Subject Discourse method. The discourses showed that the leisure activities most mentioned were practicing sports or staying at home; the teenagers consider the school as a place to promote health; esthetics is greatly valued by this age group; they associate good teeth with social life - dating, working; in their view oral health only means hygiene and clean teeth. The report of the interviewees shows a need for the development of activities in which they can participate actively, taking the peculiarities of the age group into consideration. / Doutor
