Dino, Marcelo José Bellini 10 October 2011 (has links)
In this work an attempt is made to demystify the idea that music for film and music for concert halls belong to different universes, where the first would carry less value than the second. The Sinfonietta for String Orchestra and the soundtrack from the movie Psycho, two musical works of the american composer Bernard Herrman, will be partially analyzed. The analysis portrays the interaction and intersection of what we call the domains of the concert hall and the cinema, analizing these scores from the perspective of intertextuality which can be seen through the reuse of ideas and even whole movements from the Sinfonietta within the soundtrack of Psycho. The work also depicts the historical development, aesthetics of music for film and discusses issues of its function and form. It is accompanied by a CD-ROM with audio excerpts and sequences from the film which contains the musical excerpts selected for this analysis.

This research has the aim of demonstrate the process on which the language of orchestration pervaded up to its arrival at film music composition and after, bring upon the processes acquired by film music using Bernard Herrmann's work as an example. On observing the musical production of the first decade of the north american cinema, it is possible to infer that the symphonic orchestration of cinema is one of the direct results of the concert music orchestration. To demonstrate this process, an cronological analysis of the works of the german composers was structured, considering this the closer model of cinema production. In advance, an equal analyses is made with the works of the cinema composers who preceeded Herrmann, considered references to the formation of the language. The third fase deals with Herrmann's work directly and analyses two of his works: Vertigo (1958) and Psycho (1960) / Mestrado / Fundamentos Teoricos / Mestre em Música

Film music : the synthesis of two art forms - a case study of themes and characters in Alfred Hitchcock's and Bernard Herrmann's Vertigo

Theunissen, Justin Robin 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MMus)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates the impact that a musical score can have on the visual component as well as the final product of a film. This is achieved by the use of a systematic analytical approach that covers the most important aspects of the visual and musical elements within Vertigo. The film is regarded as one of cinema’s greatest examples of excellence. The many levels of meaning, inspired use of cinematographic techniques, meticulously crafted narrative and dynamic score combine to create a film unlike any other. The analysis of Vertigo is achieved by selecting specific scenes that contain important visual and musical elements essential to the narrative. The visual and musical aspects of each scene are analysed separately before the relationship between them is studied. Following this, the results of the analysis are summarised within the larger context of the narrative and conclusions are drawn regarding the music’s influence on the visual aspects of the film as well as its role in the ultimate narrative success of Vertigo.
