A Study of Political Socialization of Junior High School Students in Kaohsiung City

In this study, the political socialization process, which includes the family factor, school factor, fellows factor and mass media factor, of the junior high school students were explored and analyzed by using a questionnaire survey. The object of this study is to understand the diverse effects in political study, which includes the basic political view, democratic value and democratic attitude, of students with different social background. Some findings in the study are: ¡]1¡^First of all, parent¡¦s occupation and ethnic group are mostly relevant to student¡¦s character in terms of family political socialization factors (PSF). But the school PSF is more relevant to gender and year of study. Besides that, there is a slightly relevance between the use of media, gender and year of study. The fellows PSF is more connected to gender, year of study, parent¡¦s job and ethnic group. (2) The PSF of gender, year of study, parent¡¦s job and ethnic group, national identity are clearly correlated to national identity, the definition of national territory, the relationship between Taiwan and China, the definition of Chinese in nationality, and the relationship between Taiwanese and Chinese in terms of students¡¦ basic political attitude. However, among them, the gender factor is less relevant than the others. ¡]3¡^In respect to student¡¦s characters with the democratic value, gender factor is relevant to political equality and majority governance; and year of study, parent¡¦s job are relevant to democratic belief, political equality, majority governance, party competition and political trust. There are also some relevance between gender and political participation; year of study and political effects, citizen responsibility and political knowledge while talking about student characters with democratic attitude. However, overall speaking, democratic attitude less relevant to student characters compared with democratic value.

A Study of the Effect of School-Sponsored, Extra-Curricular Activities on High School Students' Cumulative Grade Point Average, SAT Score, ACT Score, and Core Curriculum Grade Point Average

This study investigated the effect of school-sponsored, extra-curricular activities on academic achievement for students at a private school in north central Texas. Students selected for this study were graduates from the classes of 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2000. With a minimum participation of two years during grades nine through twelve, students were categorized into subgroups of activities. After eliminating students who participated in more than one of the extra-curricular activities of music, drama, visual arts, and athletics, three hundred sixty-one students were represented. The identity of students was encoded and information was recorded for gender, school-sponsored, extra- curricular activities, cumulative grade point averages, SAT Scores, ACT Scores, and cumulative grade point averages in core curriculum subjects. A two-way ANOVA test with a two-by-five factorial design was completed for research questions one through four. A one-way ANOVA with a one-by-five factorial design was completed for research question five. When a significant F was found, Scheffe and LSD post hoc tests were completed to determine pair wise interaction. Statistical differences did exist when comparing school-sponsored, extra-curricular activities and cumulative grade point averages with musicians having a significantly higher cumulative grade point average, SAT scores, and ACT scores than athletes. A significant difference was found among the activity subgroups regarding the cumulative grade point averages in the core curriculum subjects of foreign language, history/English (an interdisciplinary subject at the studied school), mathematics, and science with musicians scoring significantly higher than athletes in all subjects. It is recommended that further studies be conducted to investigate the impact of activities on student achievement. Studies might include larger and different populations, the impact of participation at a younger age, and the impact of other activities on student achievement.

Kreativitet relaterat till gymnasieelevers självkänsla, ålder och genus

Kreativitet är resultatet av personliga egenskaper, kognitiva förmågor och sociala miljöer. Studiens syftet var att undersöka hur kreativitet är relaterat till självkänsla, ålder och genus hos gymnasieungdomar. 111 deltagare varav 77 flickor, 17-21 år deltog. Ett tredelat test användes med frågor om fritidsaktiviteter (aktivitet), ett självkänslatest (”Jag tycker jag är”) samt ett kreativitetstest (Unusual Uses test). Resultatet av undersökningen visade inget samband mellan kreativitet och självkänsla men visade att ålder är relaterat till kreativitet. Yngre gymnasieungdomar var mer kreativa än äldre. Äldre hade högre självkänsla än yngre. Variabeln aktivitet kan ses som ett kreativitetsmått. Liksom variabeln kreativitet och visade variabeln aktivitet ett samband med ålder, yngre var mer aktiva än äldre. Det fanns inget statistiskt säkerställt samband mellan kreativitet och genus dock fanns en tendens till att pojkar kunde förutsägas vara något mer kreativa än flickor i undersökningen. Kreativitet kräver mod och för att våga vara kreativ behövs ett visst mått av självkänsla och självförtroende i en miljö som främjar aktiviteter som styrs av eget intresse och inre motivation.
