The role of the school management in addressing the problem of drug abuse in the northern areas of Port Elizabeth

Drug abuse by teenagers is a problem encountered by educators in South African schools. This study focuses on the reasons for, and the consequences of teenage drug abuse in one school in the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth. The main aim of this study was to formulate strategies which school managers can use to alleviate the problem of drug abuse among learners. A naturalistic approach was followed to conduct qualitative research. The research design used is a case study. Data-collection techniques consisted of semi-structured and unstructured interviews, observations and questionnaires. Respondents consisted of 150 learners, 5 parents, 10 educators from the school, 2 social workers and 1 auxiliary social worker, 2 priests involved in Youth Ministry, 1 adult involved in running a drug rehabilitation centre, and 1 ex-addict who is involved in arranging drug awareness campaigns and rehabilitation programs. This study found family aspects and family dynamics, personal aspects and the self-concept of the teenager, and societal or environmental aspects to be the main reasons for teenage drug abuse. Drugs have an adverse effect on the community within which the abuse is occurring. It also has a negative effect on the health, psychological state, behaviour and the family of the teenager. Strategies to alleviate the problem emphasise the role which the school can play in terms of drug education for educators, learners and parents; the role of the Government in allocating additional funds for drug education; the role which the church can play in terms of drug education and providing opportunities for positive interactions with peers; and the role which the media can play in influencing the decisions of teenagers.

The effects of teacher behavior on students who have completed treatment for alcohol and drug dependency : a qualitative analysis

The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine from the treated students' perspective what teacher behaviors facilitate recovery and what teacher behaviors inhibit recovery. Study participants included 16 high school students who had completed treatment for alcohol and drug dependency in grades 9-12, and 112 teachers. Students and teachers were interviewed to better explain the phenomenon from their perspectives. Data gathered from student interviews, student journal recordings, observer notes, and teacher interviews were used as corroborating data. The constant comparative method was used to analyze data (Glaser & Strauss, 1967).Five major themes emerged from the data analysis explaining the effects of teacher behavior on students who had completed treatment for drug and alcohol dependency. The data were segmented into themes using a bi-polar structure. These themes were: (1) student performance; (2) student communication; (3) student relations: security; (4) student: affective; and, (5) authority: student behavior. These themes yielded student identified causal conditions, intervening conditions, and action/reaction strategies that either inhibited or facilitated recovery.The data showed students did not have neutral feelings; they had either negative or positive feelings about their personal interactions with teachers or their observations of teachers' interaction with other teachers and/or other students. Teacher behaviors which resulted in negative student behavior consequences in each of the five major theme categories were not helpful to students and inhibited their recovery. Teacher behaviors which resulted in positive student behavior consequences in each of the five major theme categories helped students and facilitated their recovery.

Drug abuse in selected Grahamstown schools

The study explores drug abuse by learners in selected Grahamstown high schools. The study`s main concern is that drug abuse by learners is on the rise but yet there is less research on the drugs which are being used and the factors which motivate the learners to use such drugs. There are several drug abuse prevention strategies which are being implemented but yet they seem not to be very effective. It is in this frame of reference that this study saw it vital to focus on drug abuse by high school learners in Grahamstown. The study aims to identify the most commonly abused drugs by learners in the high schools of Grahamstown and the reasons why they use these drugs. The study made use of the mixed method research that is making use of both qualitative and quantitative research. The questionnaire was the instrument of data collection in quantitative data and interviews for the qualitative data. The packages which were used for the analysis of data include the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) V8 which was used to provide descriptive analysis and correlations. The findings of the study establish that the commonly abused drugs by learners are: alcohol with 58%, followed by cigarettes 22%, hookah-pipe 9%, dagga 7%. The main reasons why learners use drugs are: peer pressure, role models, availability, environment, and curiosity. Differences in drug use between male and female learners were noted. Twenty-five percent of the male learners and 16% of the female learners reported to be using drugs. In the view of these results, the researcher recommends that a comprehensive drug abuse prevention framework be formulated which focuses on preventing drug abuse at individual, family and community levels.

This research was confined to learners in Eersterust, a township situated to the east of Pretoria. Substance abuse, especially among high school learners in South Africa and in Eersterust, has increased in recent years. Substance abuse obviously poses a major barrier to learning. Along with poor academic motivation, this problem seriously interferes with learners’ academic performance and results in lower educational achievement. As an institution, the school is not able to provide support to these learners and so is obliged to link them with support structures such as the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependance (SANCA) and the National Youth Development Outreach (NYDO). / Inclusive Education / M.
