The Identification and Explication of a Typology of Adolescents' Leisure FunctioningEllis, Gary D. (Gary David) 08 1900 (has links)
This study involved the identification and explication of a typology of adolescents' leisure functioning, based on a state of mind definition of leisure. Subjects included 200 students from a junior high school in the midwest who completed the Leisure Diagnostic Battery (LDB) during a study hall. Procedures involved the application of two methods of cluster analysis to profiles of scores across the five LDB scales which are designed to measure perceived freedom in leisure. Following this process of identification and validation of the "types," the relationship between group membership and various barriers to leisure were examined through multiple discriminant analysis. Finally, between type differences on three preferred style of participation in recreation activity variables (active/passive, individual/ group, and risk/nonrisk) were examined through the analysis of variance.

"It is true that almost every school has some form of organized athletics, clubs, and other activities to aid in consuming some of the leisure hours and in developing desirable characteristics in their members. The field of education recognizes the basic human need for wholesome use of leisure time according to Nash. Modern education also affirms that individual differences in interests are enormous and vary tremendously from individual to individual within a group. With all these variations a great amount of grouping still takes place. It therefore stands to reason that there are certain factors which aid in determining how people spend their leisure time, and how people within a group are similar. Some of these factors are age, sex, intelligence, socio-economic status, and availability of opportunity to participate. A Survey of Intramural Sports Programs for High School Students in the Four Largest Metropolitan School Districts in TexasMiller, Diane Marie 12 1900 (has links)
The purposes of this study were to determine whether intramural sports programs are available to senior high school students in the four largest metropolitan school districts in Texas and to determine reasons why schools may not offer intramural programs. Questionnaires were mailed to eighty-four high schools in the Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio Independent School Districts. Data obtained from this survey revealed that a majority of the responding schools do not sponsor intramural sports programs for their students. The factors cited most often as the reasons for not sponsoring intramural programs were lack of facilities, inadequate number of personnel, lack of transportation, and conflict with interscholastic sports.
