Disambiguating Multiple Links in Historical Record LinkageRichards, Laura 30 August 2013 (has links)
Historians and social scientists are very interested in longitudinal data created from historical sources as the longitudinal data creates opportunities for studying people’s lives over time. However, its generation is a challenging problem since historical sources do not have personal identifiers. At the University of Guelph, the People-in-Motion group have currently constructed a record linkage system to link the 1871 Canadian census to the 1881 Canadian census. In this thesis, we discuss one aspect of linking historical census data, the problem of disambiguating multiple links that are created at the linkage step. We show that the disambiguating techniques explored in this thesis improve upon the linkage rate of the People-in-Motion’s system, while maintaining a false positive rate no greater than 5%.

Previous issue date: 2012-09-24 / Quando retornou de sua empreitada como correspondente do Diário Carioca na Segunda Guerra Mundial, junto à Força Expedicionária Brasileira (FEB), Rubem Braga (1913-1990) publicou a coletânea de crônicas Com a FEB na Itália (1945). Evidentemente, na seleção dos textos, o autor considerou o contexto político e ideológico do Brasil de meados dos anos 1940, já que, naquele tempo, o Brasil passava por um momento singular: pretendeu-se uma “redemocratização” do país e houve formação dos partidos políticos. Eleições presidenciais estavam marcadas para 2 de dezembro e Getúlio Vargas fora forçado a se renunciar, seu sucessor começou a reprimir os comunistas e nomeou novos interventores nos estados e foram substituídos alguns prefeitos, como afirmado por Boris Fausto, em História do Brasil (2010). Neste sentido, partindo de tais informações, pretende-se, através do presente estudo, investigar o valor de registro histórico de Com a FEB na Itália, bem como apontar as marcas subjetivas do seu narrador, uma vez que, devido a uma tensão entre os focos narrativos clássico, moderno e pós-moderno em tal obra, por si só, as marcas subjetivas do narrador já vêm à tona. E o tempo particular e definido, atravessado pela experiência e pela memória pessoal do repórter, mescla de linguagem subjetiva e objetiva – respectivamente, literatura e jornalismo – os textos das crônicas. / When he returned from a sojourn as a correspondent for Diario Carioca during World War II, with the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB), Ruben Braga (1913-1990) published a collection of chronicles called Com a FEB na Itália (With FEB in Italy) (1945). While selecting texts, the author surely considered Brazilian mid-1940s political and ideological context, a singular moment in Brazil: a "redemocratization" was intended for the country and political parties were being formed. Presidential elections were scheduled for December 2 and President Getúlio Vargas was forced to resign; his successor began to repress Communists and appointed new intervention-agents in the states and some mayors were replaced, as Boris Fausto stated in História do Brasil (History of Brazil) (2010). Taking such information as a starting point, the present thesis is intended to survey Com a FEB na Itália’s value as a historical record, as well as to point out its narrator’s subjective marks, since – due to a tension between classic, modern and postmodern narrative foci in this work – the narrator's subjective marks become noticeable by themselves. And the particular and set time traversed by the experience and personal memory of the reporter mixes with subjective and objective language – literature and journalism, respectively – the texts of the chronicles.

Content, form and technique of traditional and modern praise poetry in Northern SothoKgobe, D. M. (Dominic Mamahlo) 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis is a critical evaluation of the content, form and technique of
traditional and modern praise poetry in Northern Sotho.
Chapter 1 presents the aim of the study and the method of research and
defines the concepts of poetry and praise poetry. Praise poetry is viewed from
a traditional and modern perspective.
Chapter 2 deals with the content and technique of praise poetry. Content
consists of oral praise poetry lauding the heroic deeds of men in battles and
casual encounters. Modern praise poetry comments on current events.
Devices for rapid composition of the praises are discussed. Techniques differ
between poets and according to time, place and occasion.
Chapter 3 covers the traditional praises of chiefs, warriors, initiates, animals,
birds, divining bones and totem praises, examining them from the perspective
of content and form. The praises extol human achievements, peculiar animal
characteristics and the interpretation of "mawa" of divining bones.
Chapter 4 deals with the development and transition from traditional to modern
form as well as the reciprocal influence. The content and form of modern
praises of chiefs, academics, community leaders, animals, birds, divining
bones, man-made objects and some natural phenomena are discussed. Many
modern poets have also written praises of fictional characters.
Chapter 5 compares oral and written praise poetry by concentrating on the
similarities and differences between traditional and modern praise poetry. This
study shows that there are differences in of theme, rhyme, beginning and
ending, sentence length and significant emphasis on man-made objects such
as cars and locomotives as exceptional modes of transport for commuters.
Chapter 6 concludes the study and proves that praise poetry is a living or
dynamic entity which will continue to exist. Praise poetry highlights persons,
interpersonal relationships, attitudes and values derived from an African
