Analisa a arquitetura rural do atual Estado de São Paulo durante o ciclo cafeeiro entre 1800 e a década de 1940, período marcado por grandes transformações na história brasileira. O enfoque é dado ao núcleo rural da fazenda cafeeira, investigando questões como: critérios para a escolha do sítio a ser implantado; o agenciamento e as inter-relações entre as edificações; a arquitetura e o uso dos diversos edifícios que o compõem; além de suas mudanças no tempo e no espaço. O estudo se vale de levantamentos inéditos (métrico e fotográfico), da leitura de estudos correlatos, entrevistas, coleta de dados em arquivos, bibliotecas entre outros, produzindo um amplo conjunto de informações a respeito de fazendas da região paulista. / The present thesis examines Sao Paulo\'s rural architecture during the coffee export cycle, nearly from 1800 to 1940, a period marked by large changes in brazilian history. The focal point is the rural nucleus of the coffee plantation analyzed by a chain of research questions. Such as, criteria for the choice of the site to be deployed, the organization and hierarchical arrange of the buildings, its architectural shape and use manners, taking into account the gradual changes that took place within the chosen time span. The investigation makes use of inedited photographical data and in site metrics survey, in addition to the review of parallel studies, interviews, data collection on archives and libraries in a way to produce a wide range of information about farms within the current borders of Sao Paulo state.

Em perspectiva comparada, investiga o acervo de 116 casas-sede, destacando semelhanças e particularidades de partido arquitetônico, buscando salientar lógicas vernáculas intrínsecas e relacioná-las aos materiais, técnicas e sistemas construtivos disponíveis. Desnaturaliza a idéia de um \"sertão nordestino\" homogêneo - tanto em termos de paisagem natural, como em termos de cultura material - e inaugura uma nova maneira de estudar a arquitetura rural, em rede e perspectiva sistêmica, verificando na macro-escala as interfacesregionais para além do território dos atuais estados envolvidos. / This thesis analyses rural architecture related to the cattle faming, in the XIX century, in the hinterland (sertão) that spreads over the northern area of the modern states of Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and Bahia. In comparative perspective, investigates main houses bringing forward it´s similarities and the particular features of the project design, in an attempt to unveil the vernacular logic and relate these subjects to available materials, construction techniques and methods. This work demystifies the idea of an uniform northeastern region, regarding landscape and material culture and sets a new way to study rural architecture, in a global way and with systemic perspective, verifying the regional interfaces across and beyond the area of the current involved states.

Esta dissertação investiga o processo de modernização da cidade de Fortaleza, nos anos 1930 e 1940, tendo como objeto as transformações arquitetônicas ocorridas na capital, mais especificamente em seu centro da cidade, núcleo nervoso e gravitacional, onde as mudanças ocorriam com maior ressonância. Interessa ambientar a consolidação desse ideário moderno em um contexto de intensas reformas urbanas, assinalado pelo progresso material, desenvolvimento tecnológico, aceleração da dinâmica urbana, maior racionalidade e funcionalidade, crescimento populacional e territorial, incremento do consumo e expansão do capital, fortemente marcado, também, pela crescente influência norte-americana, pela Segunda Grande Guerra Mundial e pela divulgação e aceitação da estética Art Déco. O intuito é produzir uma pesquisa que contribua para a história da Modernidade em Fortaleza, entendida como um conjunto de modificações econômicas, culturais e sociais, tendo como foco maior a arquitetura. / This essay investigates the process of modernization of Fortaleza, in years 1930 and 1940, having as object the architectural transformations placed in the city, more specifically in its center, where the changes occurred with bigger resonance. This process took place in a context of intense urban reforms, material progress, technological development, acceleration of the urban dynamics, bigger rationality and functionality, population and territorial growth, increment of the consumption and expansion of the capital, also strong marked for the increasing of North American influence, the Second Great World War and the spreading and acceptance of the aesthetic Art Déco. The main intention of this work is to produce a research that contributes for the history of Modernity in Fortaleza, understood as a set of economic, cultural and social modifications, having as principal focus the architecture.
