The Impact of "Old-Wave" McCarthyism at Four Private Black Colleges and Universities in Atlanta, Georgia

<p> Decades after the term &ldquo;McCarthyism&rdquo; was first coined, it continues to be used to describe those who prey on the fears of Americans to discriminate against others. In the post-world War years, and well into the sixties, it was Communism. Today, it is &ldquo;terrorism,&rdquo; and an irrational fear of Muslims. The word is used to describe those who perpetuate unsubstantiated claims and who practice the intimidation tactics employed against those suspected of being members of a targeted group. This resurgence of the term has piqued the interest of scholars, who like me, are studying Cold War or &ldquo;old wave&rdquo; McCarthyism and comparing it to the &ldquo;new wave&rdquo; of McCarthyism that has emerged since 9-11. Similar to what transpired during &ldquo;old wave&rdquo; McCarthyism most research is focused on predominantly White institutions (PWI&rsquo;s). The historical development of Black colleges and universities reveals how the lack of resources and finances made these schools much more susceptible to pressures of external forces such as racism and McCarthyism. This then raises the question: &ldquo;What was the impact of McCarthyism at our nation&rsquo;s Black institutions of higher education?&rdquo; Except for two well-documented incidents that occurred at Fisk University during the McCarthy Era (see Gilpin and Gasman, 2003; Gasman, 1999; Gilpin, 1997; and Schrecker, 2002, 1994) and my case study (2008) on McCarthyism at Cheyney and Lincoln Universities in Pennsylvania, for the most part, this question has gone unanswered. </p><p> With the use of primary and secondary sources this study will begin to address this void in educational historiography by examining the impact of &ldquo;old wave&rdquo; McCarthyism at four existing private historically Black institutions in Georgia: Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Clark University/College, and Spelman College. With this study, I hope to expand the existing discourse on McCarthyism by making it more comprehensive, as well as more inclusive.</p><p>

O blogue como ferramenta de divulgação da história da ciência: o experimento de Cavendish

We propose posting a historical episode on a blog to reach teachers who want to use history and philosophy in their classes. We chose the Henry Cavendish experiment about the density of the Earth as the historical episode and the methodology adopted was to divide the research into three distinct steps. First, we performed the historical and epistemological study about the episode. We looked for the primary and secondary sources which helped us to understand the experiment and the hypotheses already done proposed on about the value of the Earth s density and how it was related to the gravitational law proposed by Isaac Newton. Then, we considered how this episode can make explicit some aspects of the nature of science, such as the role of the experiment in the construction of a theory and the controversies about the value of the density during the 18th century. We also explored the physics concepts related to the Cavendish experiment such as the torsion pendulum, torque and moment of inertia. The second goal was to investigate why and how blogs are employed in science teaching and in the history of science. This investigation helped us define the necessary elements in our blog to interact with teachers and students and, at the same time, to propose a historical material based on specialized studies. The third step consisted of preparing the text and complementary activities to post on the blog and to complement the blog with pictures, drawings, sound files, original sources, etc. (http://lordecavendish.blogspot.com.br/). Because the nature of the blog is dynamic and in progress, this research is partly finished and will depend on the answers and suggestions posted in the future by the followers to know if it has achieved its purpose. The construction of the blog is only the first part of a bigger project that intends to inform science teachers of the history of science by an in-depth study and presentation of historical material. / Nossa pesquisa busca minimizar um problema com relação à divulgação e à acessibilidade de materiais históricos potencialmente significativos no ensino de ciências, auxiliando professores interessados em realizar trabalhos em sala de aula e ao mesmo tempo discutir o papel da experimentação na física e a natureza da ciência com o uso de um episódio histórico. Escolhemos como episódio histórico o experimento de Henry Cavendish (1731-1810), que permite associar discussões sobre as tentativas de obter a densidade da Terra durante o século XVIII, o papel de destaque dos experimentos neste século e a lei da gravitação universal de Newton, entre outros. O episódio histórico será aprofundado considerando três perspectivas: a histórica, explorando o contexto em que o experimento foi desenvolvido, seus pressupostos, a descrição detalhada e os resultados obtidos; a epistemológica, discutindo o papel da experimentação no século XVIII e a conceitual, que versará sobre os conteúdos de movimento oscilatório, pêndulos, força restauradora, momento de inércia, segunda lei de Newton na forma angular, gravitação e torque. Nossa proposta consiste em usar um blogue como fonte de divulgação da pesquisa histórica, ferramenta que nos possibilitará uma ampla discussão com os interessados no assunto, auxiliando-os no uso do episódio em sala de aula. Propomos um material histórico interativo, onde os professores assim como seus alunos possam tirar dúvidas e comentar ao mesmo tempo online, facilitando o acesso e a aprendizagem.

The main purpose of this study is collecting articles regarding the interface History of Science and Education, published in the education periodics, as well as analyzing the historiographical perspectives, both in quantity and quality, concerning the selected articles. In addition, we analyze how this issue is presented in teaching materials aimed at high school. To accomplish this study, we have been studing original Oparin s texts, especially his 1924 article - Origin of life and the books published in 1938 - Origin of life - and 1956 - Origin of life on the Earth both translated into English under his supervision Oparin based his theory not only in dialectical materialism, but also, in Darwinism. Thus, he was able to sustain his opposition to the theory of spontaneous generation. Another point presented in this thesis is an analysis of the teaching materials used in public schools of São Paulo, which has revealed that Oparin's theory is presented in a superficial way, reinforcing the linear view of progress and continuity in Science / Nesta dissertação apresentaremos a teoria da origem da vida proposta pelo bioquímico soviético, Alekandr Ivanovich Oparin (1894-1980), aspectos de seu desenvolvimento e algumas influências na organização de suas ideias. Além disso, analisamos como o tema é apresentado em materiais didáticos voltados ao Ensino Médio. Para realizarmos esse estudo estudamos os originais de Oparin, especialmente seu artigo de 1924 Origin of life e os livros publicados em 1938 Origin of life e 1956 Origin of life on the Earth , ambos traduzidos para o inglês sob sua supervisão. Recorremos também a traduções em espanhol e português de seus textos. Oparin fundamentou sua teoria não só no materialismo dialético, mas também, no darwinismo. Com isso, foi capaz de sustentar sua oposição à teoria da geração espontânea. Outro ponto importante discutido nesta dissertação é a análise de material didático utilizado no terceiro ano do Ensino Médio das escolas públicas do estado de São Paulo, a qual revelou que a teoria de Oparin é apresentada de forma superficial, reforçando a visão linear de progresso e continuidade da ciência

It involves a qualitative research, employing an instrument of text mining and a methodology based on analysis of discourse. It was possible to identify changes in the conceptions of the teachers after contact with updated visions of the studies in History of Science. The criteria were based on current historiographic perspectives in the History of Science, which seek to demystify the genius, the precursors or fathers of modern science, the progressive evolution of science, the vision of the past with the eyes of the present / Este trabalho buscou investigar concepções de Ciência e de História da Ciência entre professores da rede pública estadual antes e após a participação em um curso de formação continuada em História da Ciência e Ensino. A pesquisa teve caráter qualitativo e utilizou instrumento de mineração de textos e metodologia baseada na análise do discurso. Pôde-se identificar mudanças nas concepções dos professores após contato com visões atualizadas dos estudos em História da Ciência. Os critérios foram pautados em perspectivas historiográficas atuais em História da Ciência, as quais procuram desmistificar o gênio, os precursores ou pais da ciência moderna, a evolução da ciência no sentido do progresso, a visão do passado com os olhos do presente

Furthermore, we sought to understand the difficulties faced in teaching in French schools of that period, we sought to also to understand what these scientists believed to be the ideal science teaching method and the influence of positivist ideas in these discussions. We analyzed in particular the role of Co-operative Education of Mme Curie (1907-1908) and the objectives of the group of teachers, including Paul Langevin, which was involved in the discussions on the reform. This work was developed from the analysis of documents filed at the Institut Curie and at Bibliothèque Nationale de France, texts and books written by scholars and scientists, with direct and indirect participation in the reform, records of lectures, articles and manuscripts of the children who participated in the cooperative, as Isabelle Chavannes and Irène Curie / Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar as ideias sobre métodos de ensino de ciências, no início do século XX, defendidas por cientistas de destaque, como Marcellin Berthelot, Paul Langevin e Henri Poincaré e a importante participação desses cientistas na reforma do ensino francês de 1902. Além disso, procurou-se entender as dificuldades enfrentadas no ensino nas escolas francesas daquele período, compreendendo o que esses cientistas acreditavam ser o método ideal para o ensino de ciências e a influência das ideias positivistas nessas discussões. Analisa-se em particular o papel da Cooperativa de Ensino de Mme Curie (1907-1908) e os objetivos do grupo de professores que, como Paul Langevin, se envolveu nos debates sobre a reforma.
