This thesis is a translation of and annotations on the Elucidarium of Honorius Augustodunensis. The Elucidarium i s an outline, in dialogue form, of Catholic doctrine. Written early in the 12th century, it was very popular during the Middle Ages and, with adaptations, remained in use until modern times. The translation makes the work available to those who do not read Latin and the annotations provide background, references and source material useful for understanding the text.

O objetivo da pesquisa é compreender o desenvolvimento de algumas das mais importantes representações da mentalidade medieval, a saber: a figura do diabo, as idéias acerca do escathon e os ideais ético-comportamentais defendidos pela reforma. Mais especificamente, propugnamos aqui analisar a partir do estudo do Elucidarium de Honorius Augustodunensis o desenvolvimento da espiritualidade e da religiosidade nos séculos XI e XII, sob a égide dos novos ideais reformadores da Igreja, especialmente como estes se deram na Inglaterra. A intenção é a partir da análise do Elucidarium explicar e explicitar as peculiaridades do desenvolvimento dos ideais reformistas e do imaginário na Britannia da época. A escolha do Elucidarium se justifica tanto por sua abrangência bem como por sua simplicidade de tecitura e complexidade de conteúdos. Esse tratado, uma espécie de Summa Totius Theologiae, constitui-se em importante janela de compreensão da utensilagem mental dos homens do medievo, já que apresenta de todas as grandes preocupações teológicas de um homem da intelligentsia voltadas para a formação do clero e para as distintas clivagens do laicato. Mais do que buscar um viés interpretativo alternativo ao dos clássicos ou mesmo entrar em pequenas querelas sobre pormenores cabe àquele que deseja trazer nova luz sobre o assunto uma mudança de foco. O que procuramos com o presente estudo é entender por quais mecanismos os ideais dogmáticos propostos pelo pólo eclesiástico se imiscuem nos costumes e tradições do pólo laico perfazendo assim um percurso pendular entre as distintas vertentes de uma cultura compósita. É perseguindo tal objetivo que nos debruçamos na análise do Elucidarium para fazermos ouvir seus silêncios. Compreender o não-dito por meio de da análise sistemática de seu discurso e suas temáticas recuperando assim, a contra-pêlo, por meio de seus indícios uma concepção mais clara da sociedade da época. / The goal of the present research is to understand the development of some of the most important representations of medieval mentality, namely: the representation of the devil, the conceptions of the end of times and the behavioral ethos formulated by the Ecclesiastic Reform. Precisely we intend to trace through Honorius Augustodunensis Elucidarium a picture of some of the most important aspects of medieval ethos and thought. The choice of the Elucidarium is due to its scope as well as its simplicity. This treaty, a Summa Totius Theologiae, is an important window to understand medieval mentality, for it shows in a simple manner all major concerns of a medieval intellectual towards the formation of a reformed clergy as well as to all laity. More than pursuing a different bias or even discussing some lesser issues it is the duty of he who whishes to bring light upon the matter a change of focus. What we intend with this present study is to understand how the dogmatic ideals of the ecclesiastic pole of society interweave with those of the lay pole. Thus, performing the pendular course, in between several varieties of a composite culture. Its pursuing this objective that we thoroughly analyze the Elucidarium to hear its silences, to understand what it doesnt say through a systemic analysis of its discourse and its themes, thus recovering, like a detective, through its evidences a clearer and broader conception of medieval society.

The Ineuitabile of Honorius Augustodunensis: A Study in the Textures of early Twelfth-Century AugustinianismsHannam, Walter January 2013 (has links)

Brown / Despite several centuries of scholarly activity, one of the most outstanding figures of the twelfth-century renaissance, Honorius Augustodunensis, remains an elusive figure. Almost nothing is known of his life--where he was born, where exactly he lived, or where he died. Yet in his own day, Honorius's considerable literary output was extremely popular, was copied in profusion, and housed in libraries across Europe. Unfortunately, most studies of Honorius's works have consisted of very general surveys that oversimplify his thought and present Honorius himself as a `simplistic' thinker. Based upon a new critical edition of the two surviving recensions of Honorius's dialogue, Inevitabile, this study seeks to redress this problem. After a careful review of the scholarly literature on the text, from 1552 to 1996, several passages from both redactions of the Ineuitabile are carefully analyzed to illustrate both the complexity of Honorius's use of his sources (auctores/auctoritates), and his masterful blending of literary allusion with dialectic, which is the foundation of his theological methodology. Finally, it is shown that the doctrine of predestination in the earliest recension of the Inevitabile, which has traditionally been labelled `Augustinian', is in fact based, in large measure, on the teachings of John Scottus Eriugena. This study seeks to change the way that Honorius's texts are read and interpreted, in the firm conviction that only by engaging with the intricacies of his sources and methodology, can his true achievement be understood and the purpose behind his vast corpus of writings be grasped. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2013. / Submitted to: Boston College. A delightful inheritance: female agency and the Disputatio tradition in the Hortus deliciarumParker, Sarah C. 2009 August 1900 (has links)
The Hortus deliciarum (ca. 1170-ca. 1194, destroyed 1870) was an encyclopedic salvation history created for the canonesses at the Augustinian convent of Hohenburg by their abbess Herrad. Despite the strong role of images in the canonesses’ reception of the manuscript, the Hortus illuminations have thus far not merited a critical consideration. In this thesis, I analyze major individual illuminations in the Hortus as well as the manuscript’s entire structure, and I suggest that Herrad designed the Hortus around contemporary apocalyptic ideas, such as those of Joachim of Fiore, while also illustrating the importance of debate and discussion to the body Christian. The overall composition of the Hortus showed the canonesses that God has chosen to share his knowledge with them. In significant individual images, Herrad expressed that they were to exercise this divine knowledge through debate of theological principles. In the Hortus, debate was shown as originating with Christianity’s Jewish desert predecessors, and the canonesses were encouraged to consider themselves as heirs of this intellectual tradition. Debate appeared as endemic to Christianity and essential to the continued life and prosperity of the Church. In stressing the importance of intellectual activity, while also implying that the canonesses were part of the intellectual elect, the Hortus exerted power that transgressed the library walls and affected the ways the Hohenbourg canonesses performed their faith and understood their responsibility as Christians. / text
