An investigation into the factors affecting the implementation of environmental labels by in-house industrial designers in UK SMEs

Horne, Daniel M. January 2014 (has links)
Environmental labels on products and services have been increasingly significant in influencing consumer purchasing and represent a crucial communication of the environmental credentials of products and companies. Yet their importance to industrial designers, who are recognised as having significant influence over the environmental impact of products, is less known. The overall aim of this research project is to investigate factors affecting the implementation of UK environmental labels by in-house industrial designers in UK Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). A review of the literature on industrial designers and environmental labels found that there was a gap in knowledge surrounding the factors affecting how and whether in-house industrial designers implement labels in their work, and what understanding they have. In response to the literature review a number of research questions were generated, which influenced the direction of this emergent, exploratory research. A Preliminary Study was set up to collect qualitative data from practicing industrial designers in UK SMEs on their recognition and use of environmental label schemes. A mock-up Resource was consequently developed that provided the information the Preliminary Study participants claimed to need. During the Main Study the Resource was used as an elicitation tool to further probe designers' understanding and use of labels. Subsequently, three Case Studies were conducted with UK SMEs who have implemented labels on their products, to identify elements of best practice. The in-house SME designers in the study appeared to have knowledge of environmental label types and schemes. Both this and designers' position within their companies especially in terms of their input on design briefs moderates their ability to implement labels. The cooperation and contribution of colleagues is also significant to the effective application including driving their use and being willing to include them in the product development process from early stages to impact on success or effectiveness. It is suggested that a whole company approach is needed. This thesis provides an original contribution to knowledge on in-house designers' capability to implement labels; understanding of designers' current knowledge and use of labels; and the role of designers in all SMEs, not just those engaged in ecodesign or using environmental labels.

The Role of Gender in Kuwait's Architecture

Redha, Ahmad 17 March 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores the different methods of gender segregation in both the home and public realm in Kuwait. The main forms of segregation exists both physically, in the form of a wall barrier, and mentally, in the way people are raised in Middle Eastern traditional and cultural norms. The goal of this thesis is to analyze the living patterns in terms of age, clan, and gender and to create a new design method for a home where it incorporates old traditional Middle Eastern home architectural styles. The new design method enhances the living environment, increases access to outdoor spaces, and improves living conditions of the servants living and working in the home.

Bo i Byn : Utformning av seniorbostad / Living at the countryside : One design of a senior housing

Johansson, Tim, Johansson, Jonas January 2018 (has links)
What happens when an elderly person wants to sell the property and move on to something that is easier to handle? Are there opportunities for older people to live in the same city as before? What opportunities are there for elderly people who want to move to a smaller residence? Can a concept be drawn up just for this assignment? This degree project will address the problem of how elderly people face a challenge to get to a simpler accommodation that is more suited to the elderly for functional and maintenance purposes. The thesis is based on an ongoing project that takes place in Norr Amsberg, a small town three kilometer north of Borlänge. In this degree project, a qualitative method will be used which means no calculations is needed. Thus, facts will be gathered from interviews, research articles and statistics. Six people have been interviewed during this project. Those who have been interviewed are two scientists who are stationed in Falun, three older people who have passed sixty-five years of ages and finally the enthusiast who started whole project in Norr Amsberg. This provides a broad ground for the conclusions drawn in the report. A concept house has been drawn up during this time, taking account of the wishes of the interviewees as appearance, functional requirements and location. The house has all accessibility requirements that a modern home will have. The building that is produced is a concept and not the finished product. Important conclusions that have been made during this study are how important the housing design is and how it affects the elderly significantly more than is generally believed and that the need will increase significantly in terms of custom housing in the future. The importance of housing design and how it affects older people are some major key factors that all municipalities learn to address when planning a type of "senior housing" for elderly people.

Experiences of Public Agency Managers When Making Outsourcing Decisions

Baig, Shakeel 01 January 2017 (has links)
Managers in state transportation agencies in the United States must frequently choose between using the talents and abilities of in-house staff or outsourcing for road and bridge design projects. Budgetary crises have strongly affected funding for transportation infrastructure. Facing budgetary pressures to suppress costs, managers must frequently make the choice of outsourcing a project or performing it in-house. Yet, decision-making models for these decisions are inadequate. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore and describe the lived experiences of public agency managers when making decisions to outsource the core government functions such as road and bridge design projects. The research question was: What are the lived experiences of managers at the public agency when making decisions about whether to outsource core government functions such as road and bridge design projects? Participants were interviewed about their lived experiences at a state Department of Transportation with 'make or buy' decisions. Purposeful sampling was used to select 19 participants for the interviews and the collected data were coded and used a van Kaam approach for analysis. Five themes emerged as findings: acceptance of outsourcing, benefits versus problems, outsourcing propelled by staff limits, loss of control when a project is outsourced, and political pressure for and against outsourcing. These findings may be relevant for management personnel at U.S. public agencies. The implications for positive social change include improved cost, increased efficiency of use of time and talent of management personnel in state transportation agencies, and cost benefits for both management and public.

O significado da parceria público-privada nos projetos habitacionais de baixa renda: os empreendimentos da Caixa Econômica Federal e da Prefeitura Municipal de São Paulo / The meaning of the public-private partnership in the habitacionais projects of low income: the enterprises of the Federal government saving bank and the Municipal City hall of São Paulo

Rangel, Silvia Regina Merendas 11 April 2007 (has links)
This dissertation covers the meaning of alternative ways for public-private partnership on low budget house design funding. The study begins by presenting the historical context on the value of public-private partnership investments on the São Paulo city development, shown on street planning, railways, city sanitation and wide area rain draining. It continues describing three cases, established on project reasoning between São Paulo city council and Caixa Econômica Federal, over the years of 2003/2004, analyzing and detaching mostly the means and the operation framing for building and infrastructure funding. At last, it shows the social, environmental, economic, urban design, marketing, financial, institutional and managing features that driven the viability analysis on house planning designs that explored that specific partnership. Thus, the outcome is an wide view over these funding forms and its implications, identified on these cases analysis.

Organic Architecture And Frank Lloyd Wright In Turkey Within The Framework Of House Design

Sonmez, Filiz 01 January 2006 (has links) (PDF)
Nature has been a source of inspiration for many architects, one of them being Frank Lloyd Wright. He re-interpreted the principles of architectural design by searching nature and uncovering its hidden dimensions to introduce his idea called organic architecture, at the onset of the twentieth century. This thesis aims to discuss the offspring of this idea in Turkey, with the awareness of the fact that the Turkish examples of Vernacular and Local architecture have always displayed great concern towards nature. The developments subsequent to the recognition of organic architecture and Wright in the Turkish Architectural arena are surveyed with reference to significant discussions, competitions, exhibitions, conferences as well as concrete examples of architectural practice. Throughout the study the discussions related to Modernism in Turkey are also referred to taking the misconception of organic architecture into consideration. Since the meaning of and the interpretations concerning organic architecture are different from those made in Europe and the USA, some Turkish architects have also conceived organic architecture different from Wright&rsquo / s understanding and interpreted it from a merely formal perspective. Wright&rsquo / s approach to &lsquo / house design&rsquo / , which transforms confined, formal, symmetrical boxes into flowing spaces, is focused in comparison to Vernacular and Local examples in Turkey, and the works designed by Contemporary Turkish architects are selected to investigate the application of the principles of design and characteristics introduced by Wright. The concept of space, use of material, relation of the building with its environment, functional requirements and constructional concerns are studied within this context.
