Obraz domu v britském románu (1906-2009) / Representation of the House in British Fiction (1906-2009). (E.M. Forster, John Galsworthy, Simon Mawer)

Hanzlová, Tereza January 2011 (has links)
The diploma thesis focuses on diverse representations of the house in selected British novels since 1906. The novels have been chosen in reference to the importance assigned to houses in terms of plot, characters, and setting, each offering a unique vision of the house. A house is perceived as a home, as a possession or as a work of art. The novels by E.M. Forster, John Galsworthy and Simon Mawer are viewed through the prism of Phenomenology, namely the essays of Martin Heidegger, Jan Patočka and Anna Hogenová. This type of analysis provides an insight into the motivations of the individual characters, but also a deeper understanding of the function and role of the house in fiction as well as in reality. All the works are studied accordingly in the context of a wider social, cultural and aesthetic background. Key words: British fiction, Phenomenology, House, Home, Modernism, Work of Art

An Architectural And Social Inventory Of The Past And The Present: Documenting The 19th Century Houses In Mentesbey

Ugur, Selen 01 July 2004 (has links) (PDF)
Culture and all of its aspects are best reflected in the home environments. Home is not only a house which is a shelter but a place with social, psychological and emotional associations, and manifests in the continous use of a house. Continuity of use in the home environments is both conceptual and physical, and this can be observed in traditional or historical domestic contexts, to which the Ottoman vernacular house is an example. This study introduces the village of MenteSbey and its 19th century vernacular home environments within their socio-cultural context. MenteSbey was once a prominent center for kadis, Ottoman state officials and judges. The profession of kadilik played an important role in the social development of the village that in turn affected the domestic architecture, which can be grouped into two as kadi and standard houses. MenteSbey houses constitute a good example for tracing &quot / home&quot / , &quot / continuity of use&quot / and &quot / status&quot / in the Ottoman house as some are still inhabited by the families descending both from the lineage of kadis and other families of the 19th century. Seventeen of these houses are documented with their plans, photographs and inhabitants in the study. This study is also an initial step for the possible cultural, architectural and historical studies in and around MenteSbey in the future, and most of all for preserving MenteSbey and its houses for the coming generations.

New constructions of house and home in contemporary Argentine and Chilean cinema (2005-2015)

Merchant, Paul Rumney January 2017 (has links)
This thesis explores the potential of domestic space to act as the ground for new forms of community and sociability in Argentine and Chilean films from the early twenty-first century. It thus tracks a shift in the political treatment of the home in Southern Cone cinema, away from allegorical affirmations of the family, and towards a reflection on film’s ability to both delineate and disrupt lived spaces. In the works examined, the displacement of attention from human subjects to the material environment defamiliarises the domestic sphere and complicates its relation to the nation. The house thus does not act as ‘a body of images that give mankind proofs or illusions of stability’ (Bachelard), but rather as a medium through which identities are challenged and reformed. This anxiety about domestic space demands, I argue, a renewal of the deconstructive frameworks often deployed in studies of Latin American culture (Moreiras, Williams). The thesis turns to new materialist theories, among others, as a supplement to deconstructive thinking, and argues that theorisations of cinema’s political agency must be informed by social, economic and urban histories. The prominence of suburban settings moreover encourages a nuancing of the ontological links often invoked between cinema, the house, and the city. The first section of the thesis rethinks two concepts closely linked to the home: memory and modernity. Analysing documentary and essay films, Chapter 1 suggests some political limitations to the figure of the fragment which dominates scholarly discussion of memory in Latin America. Chapter 2 studies films which explore the inclusions and exclusions created by modernist domestic architecture. The second section focuses on two human figures found on the threshold of the home: the domestic worker and the guest. Chapter 3 analyses unorthodox representations of domestic work, and explores how new materialist approaches can enhance readings of the political potential of ‘art cinema’. Finally, in Chapter 4 I examine films depicting household visitors that upset urban class divisions, and question the possibility of ‘domestic cosmopolitanism’ (Nava 2006) in contemporary Latin America. My comparative analysis of these films explores a rupture between physical dwelling and imagined home that points towards new political practices in a neoliberal, post-dictatorship context.

Authors such as Hannah Arendt, Paulo Freire, Dulce Critelli, M. L. Marcilio are theoretical references that allowed to reflect on the meaning of intersubjective exchanges, daily actions and social habits that develop in its context under which the humanizing conditions offers. It was developed a qualitative research inspired by phenomenology, in terms of interviews that formed six visits. The interviews were to verify the caring adults understanding about their social and educational practices when interacting with children in shelters, and took place in approximately one hour. The fed back were presented as part of the process of consultation between the researcher and interviewee and lasted two hours. This practice is conceived as an offshoot of the reflexive interview developed by Szymanski which designed to offer a span of attention and appreciation of the dialogue as a way of reflecting on educational practice activities in day-to-day. Respondents understood the moments experienced as a space for free expression of their ideas, their concepts of life, work and also, as opportunity to rethink the conditions for caregivers, educators and guardians responsible for children and adolescents who are under their care, even provisionally / Este estudo teve por finalidade investigar as práticas sócio-educativas implementadas por adultos cuidadores responsáveis pela educação de crianças e adolescentes em uma casa-lar da grande São Paulo e analisá-las como parte de um processo de socialização familiar.

Mezi architekturou a uměním: Recepce vzájemných vztahů / Between Architecture and Art: Reception of Mutual Relationships

Lehkoživová, Irena January 2019 (has links)
Irena Lehkoživová Between Architecture and Art: Reception of Mutual Relationships Doctoral thesis Abstract My doctoral thesis deals with the relationship between contemporary architecture and fine art. I track examples of such concepts and approaches in which architecture and art permeate and influence each other. Besides, I examine how selected authors approach the chosen topic. A detailed analysis of the work and ideas of individual selected architects or artists is thus complemented by clarification of their methods and starting points. The aim of this work is to look at the predefined studied subject and the context behind it, to explain the associated concepts, strategies and the functioning of mechanisms, and the transfer of themes, procedures and techniques of creation. The thesis consists of three chapters, separate case studies. The first chapter follows the tendencies and changes in displaying architecture, which, under the influence of art, tends to create more complex viewing experiences. I describe here two examples and approaches that come out of this tendency. In the first part, it is the approach to the exhibitions of the Swiss duo Herzog & de Meuron, the second part is devoted to the architectural installations, which under the influence of installation art allow the visitor a direct...
