Mais do que um conjunto de desenhos técnicos, a presente dissertação procura dar notícia de um projeto de arquitetura. E por projeto de arquitetura podemos definir, todo o tipo de registos em busca de uma solução. Desde desenhos, fotografias, citações de autores referência ou instrumentos teóricos que nos permitam ler e sobretudo transformar, a realidade com que trabalhamos. Posto isto, é através da ideia de Atlas que se vai procurar uma metodologia de trabalho, capaz de relacionar os diversos fragmentos, tendo em vista o desenho de uma solução arquitetónica que responde a um problema atual, a falta de habitação estudantil em Portugal. O trabalho apresenta-se como uma narrativa, contruindo um argumento que tomará forma através do projeto desenhado. Identificando inicialmente, o direito ao habitat como engrenagem do programa a desenvolver, o trabalho vai construindo posteriormente uma leitura do lugar, através de conceito e ideias mais genéricas. Agarrado a um discurso "rossiano", identificam-se os elementos que compõem o contexto urbano: desde a área residencial ao facto urbano individual, passando por um conjunto isolado de caráter comum e pela defesa de uma arquitetura de tendência, o trabalho acaba por ir ao encontro da cidade análoga de Aldo Rossi. Posteriormente exploram-se os conceitos tipo e modelo devido À importância que têm na construção do lugar das Fontaínhas, dos quais se destacam a casa burguesa e o bairro de S.Vítor de Álvaro Siza. Por fim, a proposta de intervenção apresenta-se como resultado das influências expostas ao longo do trabalho, assim como procura dar notícia de um modo de fazer arquitetura. Procura responder a um conjunto variado de problemas com que se deparam os estudantes e arquitetos, num contexto urbano rico pela sua diversidade morfológica, mas ao mesmo tempo devoluto no que diz respeito ao espaço útil que apresenta aos seus habitantes / More than a set of technical drawings, this dissertation seeks to report on an architectural design. And by architectural design we can define all types of records in search of a solution. From drawings, photographs, quotes by reference authors or theoretical instruments that allow us to read and, above all, transform the reality we work with. That said, it is through the idea of Atlas that a work methodology will be sought, capable of relating the different fragments, in view of the design of an architectural solution that responds to a current problem, the lack of student housing at Portugal. The work is presented as a narrative, building an argument that will take shape through the designed project. Initially identifying the right to habitat as the gear of the program to be developed, the work later builds a reading of the place, through more generic concepts and ideas. Clinging to a "rossian" discourse, the elements that make up the urban context are identified: from the residential area to the individual urban fact, passing through an isolated set of common character and the defense of a trend architecture, the work ends up going meeting the analogous city of Aldo Rossi. Subsequently, the type and model concepts are explored due to the importance they have in the construction of Fontaínhas, which the bourgeois house and the neighborhood of S.Vítor stand out. Finally, the intervention proposal is presented as a result of the influences exposed throughout the work, as well as seeking to give notice of a way of making architecture. It seeks to respond to a variaty of problems that students and architects face, in an urban context rich by its morphological diversity, but at the same time vacant with regard to the useful space it presents to its inhabitants.

A presente dissertação assume-se como um diário pessoal de reflexões em torno de uma pesquisa que informa o processo de desenho de uma proposta de arquitetura. Todo o processo é mapeado e organizado para dar notícia da metodologia de trabalho cíclica, onde as fontes bibliográficas informam as decisões projetuais e estas guiam o próprio processo de procura por novas fontes. Deste conjunto nasce um ensaio para um edifício de habitação plurifamiliar, na cidade de Vila do Conde, que procura ser o catalisador para transformar o caráter de um lugar. / This dissertation assumes itself as a personal journal of reflections around research that informs the process of an architectural proposal. The entire process depicts a workflow where the bibliographic sources brief the design decisions, and these guide the search process itself. From this set, an essay for a residential building is born, at Vila do Conde, which seeks to be the catalyst for a new transformation.

A presente dissertação tem como objectivo desenvolver um sistema que compreenda e oriente o processo compositivo. No acto de projectar um edifício existe um amplo leque de soluções, muitas delas contraditórias, que coexistem lado a lado. Esta indeterminação, que participa em qualquer criação artística, gravita em torno de características como a forma, material, escala, período histórico, cultura, clima, espaço de acção, entre outros. Contudo, na definição individual cada uma destas categorias, nota-se que quanto mais se aproxima da sua génese, mais esta se expande. Assim, a elaboração de um método de síntese que agrupe todas estas variáveis, para além de envolver um grande número de temas arquitectónicos, constítui inevitavelmente uma simplificação da realidade. Na procura de um sistema que comprima alguma desta informação, seleccionamos dois temas relativos ao exterior de um edifício: a Morfologia e a Implantação. O primeiro parâmetro, a Morfologia, analisa a volumetria de um projecto. O segundo, a Implantação, descreve como um volume se pode localizar no espaço. Estes dois factores compositivos não só influenciam a forma de um projecto, como manipulam a hierarquia entre as partes e o todo. Ainda que esta pesquisa se foque sobretudo em questões formais, e as implicações que delas provêem, o motivo de sintetisar algumas das hipóteses do processo criativo, tem como propósito tornar tangível a vasta série de possibilidades existentes nesta disciplina progressivamente mais elaborada. Pois ao nosso ver, é justamente através da abstração das temáticas compositivas, que se pode desenvolver o projecto que melhor se adeque à intenção arquitectónica. / The present dissertation aims to develop a system that understands and guides the compositional process. When designing a building there's a wide range of solutions, many of them contradictory, which coexist side by side. This indeterminacy, which exists in any artistic creation, revolves around characteristics such as shape, material, scale, historical period, culture, climate, surroundings, and many more. However, in the individual definition of each of these categories, it is noted that the closer one gets to its genesis, the broader they get. Thus, the elaboration of a synthesis method that groups all these variables, besides involving a large number of architectural themes, it constitutes, inevitably, a simplification of reality. In the search for a system that compresses some of this information, we selected two themes related to the exterior of a building: Morphology and Implantation. The first parameter, Morphology, analyzes the volumetry of a project. The second, Implantation, describes how this same volumetry can be arranged in space. These two compositional factors not only influence the shape of the project but also manipulate the hierarchy between the parts and the whole. Although this research focuses mainly on formal issues, and the implications that come from them, the reason for synthesizing some of the hypotheses of the creative process, has the purpose of making tangible the vast range of possibilities that exist in this progressively more elaborated discipline. Because in our view, it is precisely through the abstraction of compositional themes, that the project that best suits the architectural intention can be developed.

A presente dissertação de mestrado propõe investigar os modos de apropriação da habitação nos bairros ditos socias. Este estudo tem como palco de ensaio empreendimentos sociais construídos ao abrigo do Programa Especial de Realojamento (PER), em Vila Nova de Gaia. Assume-se como objetivo primário deste trabalho introduzir a componente sociológica na abordagem ao espaço habitacional, procurando compreender, partindo do esboço socio-cultural-económico de diferentes (grupos de) indivíduos, como e se estes fatores influenciam a forma como experienciam e avaliam a habitação e os espaços exteriores que lhe são próprios. Este projeto de investigação tem como base fundamental o trabalho de campo realizado junto de moradores, através/com os quais se procura perceber como é que o espaço, outrora tipificado e impessoal (característico de uma encomenda cujo futuro habitante é anónimo), através dos modos de apropriação inerentes a cada indivíduo/agregado familiar, se transforma em casa. A sustentar esta investigação está uma revisão teórica que visa colocar em evidência os diversos entendimentos e dimensões de conceitos como habitação e casa. / The present master dissertation intends to investigate the modes of housing appropriation in the so-called social neighborhoods. This study has as a rehearsal stage enterprises built under the Programa Especial de Realojamento (PER, Special Relocation Program), in Vila Nova de Gaia. Therefore, the primary goal of this work is to introduce the sociological component in the approach of the housing space, seeking to understand, starting from the socio-cultural-economic outline of different (groups of) individuals, how and if these factors influence the way they experience and evaluate the housing and subjacent outdoor spaces. The fundamental basis of this research project is the field work carried out with dwellers, throught/with which it's seeked to understand how the space, once typified and impersonal (characteristic of a request whose future inhabitant is anonymous), through the modes of appropriation inherent to each individual / household, becomes home. Supporting this investigation is a theoretical review that aims to highlight the different understandings and dimensions of concepts such as housing and home.

Esta dissertação de mestrado em arquitectura representa um estudo sobre a cultura dos banhos na esfera ocidental, com um destaque para o caso de estudo da cidade do Porto. Abordando as várias expressões e práticas do seu tempo, as formas arquitectónicas e os seus significados sociais/culturais em cada época para a sociedade, tivemos, como objectivo final, a concretização de um novo Banho Público para a cidade do Porto, adaptado ao tempo actual. O Banho Público, além de fornecer aplicações hidroterapêuticas, fornece, ainda, um espaço de relaxamento, também ele favorecedor de interacções sociais, tantas vezes casuais e envolvendo diferentes sectores da sociedade. Porém, este estabelecimento também pretende envolver os banhistas num ambiente espiritual, permitindo uma contemplação e regeneração do corpo e da mente. Foi benéfico para este trabalho o conhecimento do «Programa de valorização do património da empresa Águas do Porto, EM», que nos possibilitou enquadrar o novo projecto num antigo reservatório de água na zona de Amial em Paranhos/ Porto. Este programa permitiu que o nosso projetco se enquadre em duas estratégias nele bem identificadas: a sociocultural e a cultural/patrimonial. Com base numa atenta observação da estrutura e do espaço do reservatório, pretendemos identificar as qualidades já existentes, as quais estiveram sempre presentes na altura de conceber o novo projecto. Desta forma, a presença de água no tanque do reservatório e nos banhos de vapor do Banho Público, ao promover uma relação imediata com o visitante/banhista, estabelece assim uma referência à memória da cultura dos banhos, preservada desde outros tempos pela própria historia do reservatório que, na verdade, sempre existiu em função desse mesmo elemento - a água. / This Master's dissertation in architecture represents a study on the culture of baths in the western sphere, with an emphasis on the case study of the city of Porto. Addressing the various expressions and practices of its time, the architectural forms and their social/cultural meanings in each epoch for society, we had, as a final objective, the realization of a new Public Bath for the city of Oporto, adapted to the present time. The Public Bath, besides providing hydrotherapeutic applications, also provides a space for relaxation, also favoring social interactions, often ocurring in a casual manner and involving different sectors of society. But this establishment also intends to involve bathers in a spiritual environment, allowing contemplation and regeneration of body and mind. It was beneficial for this work the knowledge of the "Programa de valorização do património da empresa Águas do Porto, EM", which enabled us to frame the new project in an old water reservoir in the area of Amial in Paranhos/Porto. This programme allowed our project to fit into two well identified strategies: the socio-cultural and the cultural/patrimonial. Throughout a careful observation of the structure and the space of the reservoir, we intend to identify the already existing qualities, which will be preserved when designing the new project. Whilst the presence of water in the reservoir tank and in the steam baths of the Public Bath, is promoting an immediate relationship with the visitor/bather, it also establishes a reference to the memory of the culture of bathing, as well to the history of the reservoir which, in fact, have always relied on the same element - water.

Esta dissertação aproxima-se de um pequeno aglomerado urbano de baixa densidade, para, a partir dele, levantar uma reflexão alargada sobre a mobilidade, uma dimensão essencial para estudar o território e os processos de urbanização de uma sociedade hiperativa. Este pequeno aglomerado corresponde a uma freguesia limítrofe do município de Guimarães que faz fronteira a norte com o município de Braga e a oeste com o município de Fafe. Aqui a malha urbana é fragmentada e destaca-se da mancha contínua e dispersa que cobre a área sul e oeste do município e se estende pelo Vale do Ave até Vila Nova de Famalicão, Santo Tirso e Trofa. A reflexão que aqui se monta sobre o território tenta fugir de uma abordagem tecnocrática e reclamar para a disciplina um projeto político, capaz de fugir a soluções imediatas, desarticuladas e inconscientes da ideia de sociedade que materializam através da forma. Neste estudo a leitura da mobilidade e, consequentemente, do território é feita a partir de uma entrevista a três habitantes do aglomerado em questão, Gonça. As palavras recolhidas são depois articuladas por conceitos estudados, mas os habitantes têm aqui o papel de fonte primária para estudar o uso do território ou, por outras palavras, o jogo de movimentos e permanências. O estudo a que me proponho nesta dissertação não se esgota na reflexão escrita, mas passa também pela vontade de enriquecer estas reflexões a partir do desenho. / This thesis focuses on a small, low density, urban agglomeration, in order to raise a broader reflection on mobility as an essential dimension of the territory and the urbanization processes of an hyperactive society. This small settlement makes up a civil parish on the edge of Guimarães which borders with Braga to the north and with Fafe to the west. Here the urban network is fragmented and stands out from the continuous and scattered urban patchwork that covers the southwest area of the municipality and extends through the Ave Valley to the municipalities of Vila Nova de Famalicão, Santo Tirso and Trofa. Here the discussion on territory tries to steer away from a purely technocratic point of view and makes a claim for architecture as a political project. One that is able to escape from immediate solutions, disconnected from and unconscious of the idea of society that takes shape through form. In this study, an understanding on mobility and, consequently, on territory is developed from an interview with three Gonça residents. Although the spoken word is captured and interpreted with the help of established concepts, here the inhabitants take on the role of primary source of study for the use of the territory or, in other words, for the play of movements and stays within it. This study does not limit itself to written reflection, it also involves the desire to enrich these reflections through the means of drawing.

A presente dissertação parte de uma inquietação pessoal, procurando, a partir dela, enunciados de intervenção. As incertezas enunciadas pelo mundo, cada vez mais global, questionam a continuidade da identidade, das tradições e das memórias, não só na construção de um lugar, mas também na procura pela intimidade que podemos conseguir em vários espaços, lugares e paisagens. O interesse por estes temas acentuou-se ao longo do percurso académico. Assim, este trabalho pretende analisar e reinterpretar estes pontos "críticos" potenciando a possibilidade de atuar, através de um ensaio projetual, num cenário real: um terreno com duas ruínas de xisto e granito, na freguesia de Jugueiros, no concelho de Felgueiras. O lugar, as ruínas e a procura por entender o espaço da casa são os principais temas analisados no decorrer das reflexões realizadas ao longo do trabalho. Estes temas surgem da necessidade de manter uma postura crítica e consciente face aos problemas que um projeto pode suscitar. Deste modo, o projeto surgirá não só como corolário, mas também como indutor de um conjunto de considerações face aos problemas considerados ao longo do seu processo de desenvolvimento e aos temas acima expostos. / This thesis was motivated by a personal concern, wich serves porpose to search for statments of intervention. The uncertainties enunciated by the world, highly globalized, question the countuinity of identity, traditions and memories, not only in the construction of a place, but also in the search for the intimacy we can achieve with spaces, places and landscapes. The interest around this themes increased thrue the academic journey. Thus, this work intend to analise e reinterpret this "critical" points, enhancing the possibility of acting, throught a project possibility, in a real scenario: a plot with two shale and granite ruins, in Jugueiros, Felgueiras. The place, the ruins and the search for understanding the spaces of the House are the main themes analysed thrue the flections carried out throughout the work. These themes arise with the necessity of having a critcal and conscious posture towards the problems that a project may raise. In this way, the architectural project emerges not only as a corollary, but also as an inducer of the problems considered throughout its development process and the themes exposed before.

Esta dissertação, no domínio da Arquitetura, aborda os Bairros Operários, como tentativas de resposta aos problemas de habitação instaurados pelas exigências da Revolução Industrial. Esta penúria de residência operária, exponenciada pelos movimentos das áreas rurais para a cidade, é retratada através de quatro espaços pertencentes ao concelho de Guimarães, construídos sob a aura da industrialização nesta região, no início do século XX. Centra-se, assim, sobre o bairro operário, o seu enquadramento na História Industrial Portuguesa e a sua influência na modificação do tecido urbano, dissertando sobre a importância da filantropia industrial e a disparidade entre a intervenção privada e promoção pública para a edificação destes núcleos de trabalhadores fabris. Será assim dado um breve olhar sobre os problemas sociais originados por este tipo de guetização social, sendo reforçado pela descrição dos quatro casos que analisamos, os bairros particulares que servirão de base à nossa generalização, apoiando-nos num referencial teórico e arquivístico. As 'Casas de Tabela' constituirão o projeto que nos leva a refletir sobre questões de construção e a sua determinação nos modos de viver, servindo também como exemplo da análise sobre a adaptação das habitações às necessidades contemporâneas. Consequentemente, deixaremos alguns apontamentos sobre a atualidade dos bairros, focando-nos nas remodelações operadas e nos projetos de qualificação. / This dissertation, in the domain of Architecture, approaches the working class neighborhoods, as an attempt to answer the housing problems established by the demands of the Industrial Revolution. This scarcity of workers' residence, exponentiated by the movement from the rural areas to the city, is portrayed through four spaces belonging to the county of Guimarães, built under the issue of industrialization in this region, in the early 20th century. Therefore, it is on the working class neighborhood that the Portuguese Industrial History is centered and its influence on the modification of the urban tissue, lecturing about the value of industrial philanthropy and the disparity between private intervention and public promotion for the construction of these factory workers cores. Thus, a succinct look will be yield on the social problems caused by this type of social ghettoization, being reinforced by the portrayal of the four cases we analyzed, the specific neighborhoods that will serve as basis for our generalization, supporting us in a theoretical and archival framework. The 'Casas da Tabela' (The Chart Houses) composes the project that leads us to mirror the issues of construction and their determination in ways of living, also serving as a specimen of the analysis on the adaptation of housing to contemporary needs. Accordingly, some notes about the current status of the neighborhoods will be referred, focusing on the remodeling operations and qualification projects.

O diálogo entre a Arquitetura e a Educação toma lugar para a reflexão desenvolvida no presente trabalho. Como ponto de partida, esta dissertação imaginou uma resposta possível a um concurso de arquitectura elaborado pelo Archstorming, em parceria com Estamos juntos e a ONG Somos del mundo que, através do lançamento daquela iniciativa, procura proporcionar melhores condições de estudos para as crianças de uma comunidade, da zona rural de Xai-Xai, em Moçambique. O desenvolvimento de um projeto de espaço de ensino que apresentasse estímulos positivos à aprendizagem e, ao mesmo tempo, pudesse incorporar aspetos ligados à ecologia, à preocupação com o meio ambiente e aos recursos da comunidade local foi o objetivo principal da presente dissertação. A proposta procurou, justamente, a reavaliação de possibilidades construtivas locais para as opções do projeto, no sentido da possibilidade de autoconstrução e autonomia de recursos. O projeto desenvolvido tentou combinar o sentido do lugar e o sentido da escola, entendida, neste trabalho como um equipamento público, mas também um lugar de referência para toda a comunidade. / The dialogue between Architecture and Education takes place for the reflection developed in this work. As a starting point, this dissertation envisioned a possible responde to an architecture competition prepared by Archstorming in partnership with Estamos Juntos and the ONG Somos Del Mundo, which, by launching that initiative, seeks to provide better study conditions for children community, in the rural area of Xai-Xai, in Mozambique. The development of a teaching space project that presented positive stimuli for learning and, at the same time, could incorporate aspects related to ecology, concern for the environment and the resources of the local community was the mais objective of this dissertation. The proposal sought, precisely, to reevaluate local constructive possibilities for the project options, in the sense of the possibility of self-construction and autonomy of resources. The developed project tried to combine the sense of place and the sense of the school, understood, in this work as a public equipment, but also a place of reference for the whole community.

A presente dissertação, de método teórico-prático, pretende constituir uma reflexão sobre o processo de aprendizagem e de experimentação da disciplina da arquitectura, através da concepção de um aquário público para o local onde se encontra a Estação de Zoologia Marítima Dr. Augusto Nobre. A proposta implanta-se num espaço que se desenvolve entre a cidade, o jardim e o mar, numa situação que requer uma intervenção que seja capaz de se integrar num território já consolidado, como um elemento capaz de reescrever e dinamizar um contexto urbano pré-existente. Este documento procura, assim, comunicar o modo como a investigação do contexto real e a recolha de informação, memórias e experiências arquitectónicas prévias participam na dimensão prática da elaboração de um projecto de arquitectura. A identificação dos procedimentos que informam o processo criativo - que englobam o confronto com a realidade, e o levantamento das problemáticas que surgem através da leitura e interpretação do lugar e do programa -, constitui o principal objectivo deste estudo. Pretende-se, assim, desconstruir o processo de projecto, compreendendo a arquitectura como uma expressão transdisciplinar, que é informada e mobilizada por uma grande variedade de forças que resultam do confronto entre a objectividade e a subjectividade que caracterizam o processo criativo. O desenvolvimento do trabalho organiza-se através de uma sequência de aproximação à prática do projecto, com início na análise do lugar, passando pela compreensão da essência do programa, e culminando na aplicação dos conhecimentos previamente adquiridos na materialização de uma proposta que resulta de um questionamento profundo sobre os fundamentos lógicos que informam e mobilizam a sua concepção. / The present dissertation, of theoretical and practical method, intends to encompass a reflection on the process of learning and experimenting the discipline of architecture, through the design of a public aquarium for the place where the Marine Zoology Station Dr. Augusto Nobre is stationed. The proposal is inserted in a space located between the city, the garden and the sea, in a situation that requires an intervention that is capable of integrating the new object into an established territory, as an element capable of rewriting and energising a pre-existent urban context. Therefore, this document seeks to communicate the way how the investigation of the local context and the assemblage of information, memories and previous architectural experiences participate in the practical dimension of the elaboration of an architectural project. The acknowledgement of the procedures that inform the creative process - which include the confrontation with reality, and the analysis of the place and the programme -, represents the main purpose of this study. Thus, the intention of this work is to deconstruct the design process, understanding architecture as a transdisciplinary expression, which is informed and mobilised by a wide variety of forces that result from the confrontation between the objectivity and the subjectivity that characterise the creative process. The development of the work is organised through a sequence of approximation to the design process, starting with the analysis of the place, passing through the understanding of the essence of the programme, and culminating in the application of the knowledge that was previously acquired, in the materialisation of a proposal that results from a profound questioning of the foundations that inform and mobilise its conception.
