The link between marital satisfaction and emotional intelligence31 October 2008 (has links)
M.A. / This study set out to investigate the relationship between Emotional Intelligence and martial satisfaction. In the past several years, marriages appear to have undergone much change, moving towards a more egalitarian relationship. Intimacy and conflict resolution appear to play an important role in maintaining marital satisfaction. Skills involved in conflict resolution and intimacy also form part of a greater construct called Emotional Intelligence (EI). Mayer, Salovey, and Caruso (1998), describe a four branch ability model of EI. This model describes EI as the ability to be perceptive of ones own and others emotions, to manage and regulate ones emotions, to be able to effectively express ones emotions and lastly, the ability to use stored emotional information to deal with various situations. To ascertain levels of emotional intelligence and marital satisfaction the Schutte Self Report Inventory (SRI) and the Marital Satisfaction Inventory–Revised (MSI-R) was administered to a group of couples married for longer than one year (n = 61). MANCOVA’s and ANCOVA’s were administered to asses the relationship between EI and various sub-scales of marital satisfaction in the couples. The results showed that there was significant relationship between EI and certain aspects of marital satisfaction. The level of male EI was found to have a significant effect on the couples affective and problem solving communication. It also effected the level of female sexual satisfaction and the ability to cope with family history of distress. The female EI was found to be related to decreased levels of male aggression, a greater ability to deal with her family history of distress and role orientation. It was found that in most circumstances, the level of male EI was responsible for couple’s marital satisfaction. Further results indicate that the greater the gap between each partners level of EI, the greater their level of marital dissatisfaction. For future research, it may be beneficial to do a longitudinal study of the same nature using a larger sample. Measuring instruments that do not rely on self-report may produce other results. Finally, future studies may benefit by using a culturally diverse sample, to assess whether the finding may be generalised to all communities in South Africa.

Wife abuse in cross-border marriages: intersections of migration, gender, class, and culture.January 2012 (has links)
With the increasing recognition of the linkage between wife abuse and migration in the literature, this study examines violence against female marriage migrants in the context of Mainland-Hong Kong cross-border marriages under an intersectional framework. Using 11 in-depth interviews with battered marriage migrants from Mainland China, findings of this study revealed that abuses against immigrant women perpetrated by their intimate partners was a result of the intersections between migration, gender, class, and culture, which rendered immigrant women legally, economically, socially, and culturally trapped in the abusive marriages. This study demonstrates how migration increased marriage migrants’ vulnerability to violence and jeopardized their ability to manage violence through interacting with their class disadvantages, gender inequalities within their marriages, and their traditional cultural norms about marriage and family. As wife abuse does not have a uniform impact on all women, practitioners, policy makers, and researchers must be cognizant of the intersectional nature of violence and ensure that marriage migrants’ needs are appropriately catered for when tackling violence against the immigrant population. Policy implications and recommendations which address the urgent needs of providing appropriate and effective intervention for immigrant women are discussed at last. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Chiu, Tuen Yi. / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 41-48). / Abstracts also in Chinese. / Chapter 1 --- Introduction --- p.1 / Chapter 2 --- Literature review --- p.5 / Chapter 3 --- Research site --- p.9 / Chapter 4 --- Research method --- p.13 / Chapter 5 --- Results --- p.14 / Chapter 5.1 --- Immigration and Wife Abuse --- p.14 / Chapter 5.2 --- Immigration, Gender inequalities, and Wife Abuse --- p.18 / Chapter 5.3 --- Immigration, Economic Marginalization, and Wife Abuse --- p.21 / Chapter 5.4 --- Immigration, Culture, and Wife Abuse --- p.24 / Chapter 6 --- Discussion and recommendations --- p.28 / Chapter 7 --- References --- p.41

Husband-Father Involvement in the Family as Perceived by a Select Group of Husbands and WivesFindlay, David Hugh 01 May 1976 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to compare perceptions of husbands with perceptions of wives to determine if there were any significant differences between them. The perceptions dealt with husband-father involvement in the family. Husband and father patterns have experienced many alterations over the past years, and in general, have changed from strict patriarchal or traditional patterns to more equalitarian or contemporary patterns. Considering the changes that have occurred, it was hypothesized that husbands and wives would tend to perceive husband-father involvement quite differently.
Questionnaires were created by the investigator of this study. They were designed primarily to determine the types and qualities of husband-father involvement in the family. The chi-square analysis was used to determine significant differences between husbands' and wives' perceptions. In general, husbands and wives perceived husband-father involvement in basically the same way.
Significant differences were found in several areas: husbands' overall performance compared to the average husband and father, husbands' time away from home, husbands' expressions of affection and love, and husbands' religious activity in the home. Although the outcome showed husbands' and wives' perceptions as generally the same, wives did tend to indicate a greater measure of satisfaction with the husbands' overall performance in the family than did the husbands.

The study of male characters in Bai Xian-Yong¡¦s novelsHuang, Fang-lien 17 January 2011 (has links)
Bai Xian-yong is one of the most important contemporary writers. His works deeply and emotionally discussed changes in national history, sexual conflicts, homesickness for a foreign country, difference between Chinese and Western culture , etc. With love and care, the soul of the novels is established by the thoughts and feelings of the characters he created. The artistic energy and moving strength coming from his novels explain why his works play an important role in the literary world.
First, this paper begins with the motivation of this thesis and the review of related papers. Through the reviews, we can seek more opportunities to support our study.
Second, we start to analyze the main ideas and writing skills of ¡§Dream of the Red Chamber¡¨ which greatly affected Bai Xianyong's writings to find out the principles to classify male characters in his novels.
Continued from previous discussion, after male characters are distinguished by their attitudes toward ideality, we explore their behaviors to find out the meaning and implication of why Bai created these roles. Next, we discuss those characters¡¦ changes or resistance when they feel depressed with the ideal and the reality of the conflicts.
Furthermore, we find that the roles of husband and father in Bai Xianyong's novels reveal his dissatisfaction with the social system at that time, sympathy with homosexuals and care for women.
Finally, the meaning of male roles in Bai Xianyong's works is summarized. By analyzing and discoursing the way he builds up the images of the male roles, his great contributions to modern literature are clearly presented.

'n Pastoraal-teologiese studie oor die roeping van die Afrikaanssprekende man tussen die ouderdom van 30-40 in die gesin, kerk en samelewing / Paul Jacobus de BruynDe Bruyn, Paul Jacobus January 2004 (has links)
The aim of this study was to look at the vocation of the Afrikaans-speaking male between 30
and 40 years within the family, church and society. The following procedure was followed:
A base theoretical investigation was undertaken to establish Scriptural perspectives
on the subject. The model of Zerfass was used.
It was found:
The male as representative of God on earth must live in an intimate personal relationship
with God. He should therefore be peacemaker, acting in love towards all, even his enemies.
A man should accompany his wife as his equal with unconditional sacrificial love so that she
is able to grow spiritually. His family should be the highest priority in his daily programme.
Metatheoretical perspectives were subsequently obtained from the two disciplines,
namely Psychology and Sociology. An empirical study was simultaneously undertaken
in order to determine the shortcomings in a man's life.
The following conclusions were made:
The male between 30 and 40 years-old is in a phase where he critically evaluates certain
religious systems and values.
The male between 30 and 40 years regards his marriage and family as one of his four
"enemies" because it feels as if his family expects too much of him.
The male between 30 en 40 years also struggles to maintain a balance between time at work
and time with his family.
Theoretical guidelines from practice were subsequently established by synthesising the
above information in an hermeneutical way.
The following guidelines were set:
Through the love of Christ a man should be "the salt of lie" to counteract perdition and a
"light for this world" to indicate direction in life.
A husband should make time for his family in order to spend quality time with them. His
behaviour and the way that he communicates with them will show them that he loves them,
appreciates them and understands them.
A man should do his work as if were doing it for Christ, and not for people. This, however,
means that he should work in such a way that he does not lose valuable time that he could
have spent with his family.
A man must be aware of his own sinful nature and continuously profess his sins before God
and his neighbour.
This study aimed to give men a vision so that they would have a conception of what it means
to be a man of God in a troubled world. / Thesis (M.Th. (Pastoral))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Rolkonflik by getroude manlike opvoeders / deur Deon VosVos, Deon January 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to determine to what degree the married male
educator experiences role conflict. The study was piloted by means of a literature
study and thereafter an empirical investigation. The purpose of the literature study
was to identify possible causes of role conflict and the empirical study was to
determine the degree of role conflict experienced by the respondents.
The problem statement and research objectives were formulated in Chapter 1. the
objective of the study was formulated and the method of research was discussed. A
study population was determined and the chapter is concluded with the chapter
division.
Chapter 2 concentrated on a few descriptions that are related to the concept "role".
The nature of the role of the man was discussed from a judicial perspective. The
chapter was concluded with the nature of the man's role in and outside the home.
The nature of the role conflict was discussed in Chapter 3. Concepts such as inter
role conflict and intra role conflict received attention. Possible factors that contribute
to the experience of role conflict in the married male educator were identified from the
literature. These factors that lead to experiencing role conflict are divided into three
categories, namely in the family, at work, and in the family and at work.
The purpose of Chapter 4 was to empirically determine whether the respondents
really experience role conflict as a result of the discussed factors and to what degree
role conflict is experienced. The research design, questionnaires as research
instrument as well as the composition in the questionnaire was discussed in this
chapter. The completed questionnaire was empirically analysed and certain
interpretations were formulated from it.
A summary of all the chapters was done in Chapter 5, findings were formulated and a
few recommendations, based on the findings, were made. The findings indicated that
role conflict is indeed experienced by the respondents and that the causes that lead
to conflict originate in the family, society and the workplace. It was also found that
practical meaningful differences exist between certain biographical data of the
respondents and single factors that lead to experiencing role conflict. Minimal sing of
these factors is a theme that can receive attention in future research. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.
