Seafloor Massive Sulphides: Assessment of Sustainable Mining Potential through an Iterative Decision-making FrameworkAVERY, CHRISTOPHER SCOTT 12 December 2011 (has links)
Extraction of metals from the seafloor has been considered for decades, beginning with manganese nodules in the 1970s. Today, the targets are massive sulphide deposits rich in copper, zinc, gold, and silver that are associated with hydrothermal vents or black smoker chimneys that occur at divergent and convergent plate margins such as mid-ocean ridges and volcanic island arcs respectively.
A recent objective of the mining industry is to develop industry practices that coincide with concepts of sustainability or sustainable development. This objective, known by some as sustainable mining, has indeed become an essential part of the commissioning of any new project, regardless of geographical location. While there has been much work on sustainable mining practice for terrestrial mining, these frameworks are not directly applicable to seafloor projects.
There are two problems facing the development of a seabed mining industry. First, there is a regulatory vacuum when considering the mining of seabed deposits, leading to important policy issues. Second, the economic, environmental, and social impacts of a seabed mining project are theoretical, and the real impacts are unknown. Thus, the identification, characterization, and analysis of the sustainability issues facing a seabed mining project are essential steps. To assist with performing these three steps, this thesis provides a process model based on the IDEF0 (Integration DEFinition) standard to assess seafloor massive sulphide mining projects from sustainable mining perspectives. This adaptation of IDEF0 provides a clear, visual representation of a hierarchical framework that can be used to identify “go no-go” sustainability criteria to assist decision makers interested in the potential development of an ore body. / Thesis (Master, Mining Engineering) -- Queen's University, 2011-12-12 12:54:28.436

This thesis, based on VLS-1 V03 accident investigation report, advanced foreigner space programs faults and their improvements recommendations, analyses existing processes and proposes additional ones for the systems engineering of Sounding Rocket VSB-30. VSB-30 is developed by Instituto de Aeronáutica e Espaço. The processes are: requirements management, requirements development, technical solution, verification, product integration and validation. All processes are based on compliance with CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) best practices and the use of IDEF0 notation. Existing processes were analysed in comparison with CMMI using IDEF0 notation. Processes proposed are based on CMMI best practices using the IDEF0 notation. Improvements were proposed to the process complying with CMMI and additional processes and their respective IDEF0 models were proposed to processes areas not covered by existing processes. Using IDEF0 models, product and process metrics were derived in order to serve as a reference for future developments. Process capability and organization maturity were assessed based on CMMI scale. Conclusions are that CMMI may be used as a reference model for assessing the status of current and other rocket processes capability as well as the organization maturity and that IDEF0 provides the necessary visibility for identifying opportunities for processes improvement as better systems and subsystems requirement management and the traceability of requirements during a space program life cycle.

Re-engineering the project procurement process through concurrent engineeringBowron, John January 2002 (has links)
The construction industry in the United Kingdom is a multi-billion pound business that contributes, on average 10% of the UK Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, it is seen by many to be underachieving in terms of service delivery and investment opportunities. Projects are frequently late and over budget much to the disappointment of those involved in the industry and especially clients. Many investigations have been commissioned and resulting reports have suggested improvements in the way the industry is organised. Procurement of construction projects in the main are undertaken using methods that support fragmentation and adversarial relationships. However, with the introduction of partnering and prime contracting some improvements have been made. Procurement of a construction project begins with the strategies developed during briefing and is only complete when the facility is handed over to the client, some contract strategies allow for the facility to be completed once it is in operation, has been maintained and eventually is demolished. Costings and programmes are then related to life-cycle issues and aspects such as maintenance have to be taken into account during the facility development stages. The adoption of Concurrent Engineering (CE) is seen to offer the construction industry a way forward. Having been adopted extensively by manufacturing in its product development stages a similar adoption by the construction industry would go some way to achieving the 30% improvement in real terms suggested by Latham [1994] and Egan [1998]. The research described in the thesis aims to develop a new procurement method for the delivery of construction projects. The approach adopted was to identify current methods of procurement and the problems associated with each method. Then using Concurrent Engineering as a basis, a new procurement model was developed that offered potential improvements in the construction process between the stages of Clients Briefing and Detailed Design. The resulting model was evaluated through the application of CE principles into the process and by the presentation and discussion of the method with a number of industry participants, followed by the completion and assessment of a questionnaire. The model was shown to fulfil the principles of CE and could be adopted into construction. It offers a new approach to procurement which in turn would save costs and time and potentially improve the quality of the final construction product.

透過ODS進行企業資訊系統整合之研究-以某企業為例 / Using ODS to integrate enterprise systems: A case study黃琬婷, Huang, wan ting Unknown Date (has links)
Owing to rapid advances in technology, enterprises have a major change of the progress of science and technology. The enterprises not only change rapidly in demand, but also have to response to the external environment rapidly. Hence, enterprise information system integration issues get more attentions. Enterprises hope to improve their systems from function-oriented to process-oriented because the effective integration of information and standardization allows enterprises to quickly link with the external environment and to enhance the overall operating performance.
However, there are many kinds of integrated approaches. At present, there is no substantive conclusion in approaches to integrate efficiently all systems in business. The main reason is that the integration of different cases has different integration requirements. Therefore, it cannot concretely show the value of system integration through the discussion of the theoretical aspects.
In this thesis, this study aims to enhance the operation of a case to model, analyze, and construct an integrated data model. This research has 4 phases to construct integrated data model. In phase 1 and 2, this study builds the case data flow modeling and business process modeling and discovers information gap. In phase 3, the study selects the most suitable method for this case, that is, to use the data level integrated approach to design integrated data model. Finally, using ETL illustrates system operation mode and describes the case which may encounter problems and initial solutions follow in phase 4.

A methodology for Agri-industrial system modeling in order to identify traceability and quality parameters - a continental malacoculture application.Cunha, Gilberto José da 07 October 2008 (has links)
It is proposed the application of some Systems and Software Engeneering techniques to the modeling of agro-industrial systems, in an innovative way, defining a methodology in order to better understand the activities and relationships among the many agents within an specific supply chain. The application of Use Case Model is also presented for requirements and traceability identification and gathering throughout the productive chain. The Use Case technique applied to the productive chain helps to specify more quality and adherent information systems. As an example of those methods, some business and information processes modeling applied to the Continental Malacoculture Productive Chain are presented, using the IDEF0, BPMN and use case techniques. Worldwide aquaculture has increased in importance due to growth and successive increase in productivity, conferring this type of production an outstanding position in the international animal production sector. Amongst different modalities of aquaculture, in the last two decades, the production of escargots (malacoculture) has deserved attention from businessmen, government and researchers. In continental waters, Continental Malacoculture, especially ampullariculture can be seen as a way of producing low impact mollusks, using a system compatible with small farms production, contributing to a greater increase in the availability of high nutritional value food and also improving rural families\' income.
