The impact of spatial interpolation techniques on spatial basis risk for weather insurance: an application to forage crops

Turenne, Daniel 21 September 2016 (has links)
Weather index insurance has become a popular subject in agricultural risk management. Under these policies farmers receive payments if they experience adverse weather for their crops. Spatial basis risk is the risk that weather observed at stations does not correspond to the weather experienced by the farmer. The objective of this research is to determine to what extent spatial basis risk can be impacted by the interpolation technique used to estimate weather conditions. Using forage crops from Ontario, Canada, as an example, a temperature based insurance index is developed. Seven different interpolation methods are used to estimate indemnities for forage producers. Results show that the number of weather stations in the interpolation area has a larger impact on spatial basis risk than the choice of interpolation technique. For insurers wishing to implement this type of insurance, more focus should be placed on increasing the number of available weather stations. / October 2016

South Africa's changing regulation: an opportunity for smaller players in the insurance industry

Mkhabela, Manqoba Bonginkosi January 2016 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Management in Finance and Investments at the Wits Business School, 2015 / The South African insurance industry exists within the shifting paradigm of regulation. The global financial crisis in 2008 has fostered a worldwide need to reassess the financial regulatory environment. Financial stability, reduction of redundancies and the closing of loopholes, so as to avoid arbitrage, has since come under the spotlight. In keeping with the international principals and trends The South African National Treasury has tabled a series of legislation that will help close the gaps, ensure the prudential integrity of the insurance system and outline the fair treatment of customers involved. Micro-insurance and funeral insurance present systems that are highly unregulated and therefore pose a threat to both the principals of prudential and market conduct oversight. Micro-insurance is also heralded as the saving grace (Morduch, 2002) in providing a vehicle to include the formerly excluded members of the society to the mainstream insurance market. The paper explores the various operators that exist in the funeral insurance market and aims to answer whether an opportunity exists for them under the new regulatory paradigm. Perceptions of industry role players are presented in the findings of this paper. These perceptions were attained by interviewing the industry professionals that are privy to the compliance information and are well versed in the strategy of their company. The findings in the paper show that the current system that exists is not conducive for informal operators. It further acknowledges that even though a great opportunity exists for informal insurers, because of their understanding of socio-economic factors of the low income sector, they do not see the opportunity that is presented to them. Furthermore there exists a place for these players to operate in the formal network, and their entrance will not cannibalise the existing insurance industry. / GR2018

Total repair cost limit replacement policies: analyses and comparisons

Dube, Khanyisa Phumza January 2016 (has links)
A Research Report submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science. Johannesburg, 2016 / Maintenance of technical systems aims at retaining their reliability and availability, restoring their capability of continuing their operation in case they have failed. A number of reliability and maintenance policies that play a significant role in reducing system failures and in making cost-effective decisions on whether to repair or replace a system will be examined in great detail. This research report places greater emphasis on the total repair cost (TRC) limit policy and compares it with other polices like the economic lifetime (EL) policy. The maintenance cost rate will be used to obtain the optimal parameters. When a system fails, it is replaced with an identical unused one if the total repair cost goes beyond a pre-determined repair cost limit by a preventive replacement if in the time period (0, v) no failure forces a replacement of the system. Else, a repair is carried out. / M T 2016
