Towards Simulations of Binary Neutron Star Mergers and Core-Collapse Supernovae with GenASiS

Budiardja, Reuben Donald 01 August 2010 (has links)
This dissertation describes the current version of GenASiS and reports recent progress in its development. GenASiS is a new computational astrophysics code built for large-scale and multi-dimensional computer simulations of astrophysical phenomena, with primary emphasis on the simulations of neutron star mergers and core-collapse supernovae. Neutron star mergers are of high interest to the astrophysics community because they should be the prodigious source of gravitation waves and the most promising candidates for gravitational wave detection. Neutron star mergers are also thought to be associated with the production of short-duration, hard-spectral gamma-ray bursts, though the mechanism is not well understood. In contrast, core-collapse supernovae with massive progenitors are associated with long-duration, soft-spectral gamma-ray bursts, with the `collapsar' hypothesis as the favored mechanism. Of equal interest is the mechanism of core-collapse supernovae themselves, which has been in the forefront of many research efforts for the better half of a century but remains a partially-solved mystery. In addition supernovae, and possibly neutron star mergers, are thought to be sites for the emph{r}-process nucleosynthesis responsible for producing many of the heavy elements. Until we have a proper understanding of these events, we will have only a limited understanding of the origin of the elements. These questions provide some of the scientific motivations and guidelines for the development of GenASiS. In this document the equations and numerical scheme for Newtonian and relativistic magnetohydrodynamics are presented. A new FFT-based parallel solver for Poisson's equation in GenASiS are described. Adaptive mesh refinement in GenASiS, and a novel way to solve Poisson's equation on a mesh with refinement based on a multigrid algorithm, are also presented. Following these descriptions, results of simulations of neutron star mergers with GenASiS such as their evolution and the gravitational wave signals and spectra that they generate are shown. In the context of core-collapse supernovae, we explore the capacity of the stationary shock instability to generate magnetic fields starting from a weak, stationary, and radial magnetic field in an initially spherically symmetric fluid configuration that models the stalled shock in the post-bounce supernova environment. Our results show that the magnetic energy can be amplified by almost 4 orders of magnitude. The amplification mechanisms for the magnetic fields are then explained.

Properties of turbulent star-forming clusters : models versus observations

Schmeja, Stefan January 2006 (has links)
<p> Stars are born in turbulent molecular clouds that fragment and collapse under the influence of their own gravity, forming a cluster of hundred or more stars. The star formation process is controlled by the interplay between supersonic turbulence and gravity. In this work, the properties of stellar clusters created by numerical simulations of gravoturbulent fragmentation are compared to those from observations. This includes the analysis of properties of individual protostars as well as statistical properties of the entire cluster. </p> <p> It is demonstrated that protostellar mass accretion is a highly dynamical and time-variant process. The peak accretion rate is reached shortly after the formation of the protostellar core. It is about one order of magnitude higher than the constant accretion rate predicted by the collapse of a classical singular isothermal sphere, in agreement with the observations. </p> <p> For a more reasonable comparison, the model accretion rates are converted to the observables bolometric temperature, bolometric luminosity, and envelope mass. The accretion rates from the simulations are used as input for an evolutionary scheme. The resulting distribution in the Tbol-Lbol-Menv parameter space is then compared to observational data by means of a 3D Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The highest probability found that the distributions of model tracks and observational data points are drawn from the same population is 70%. </p> <p> The ratios of objects belonging to different evolutionary classes in observed star-forming clusters are compared to the temporal evolution of the gravoturbulent models in order to estimate the evolutionary stage of a cluster. While it is difficult to estimate absolute ages, the realtive numbers of young stars reveal the evolutionary status of a cluster with respect to other clusters. The sequence shows Serpens as the youngest and IC 348 as the most evolved of the investigated clusters. </p> <p> Finally the structures of young star clusters are investigated by applying different statistical methods like the normalised mean correlation length and the minimum spanning tree technique and by a newly defined measure for the cluster elongation. The clustering parameters of the model clusters correspond in many cases well to those from observed ones. The temporal evolution of the clustering parameters shows that the star cluster builds up from several subclusters and evolves to a more centrally concentrated cluster, while the cluster expands slower than new stars are formed.

Chemistry in the Final Stages of Stellar Evolution: Millimeter and Submillimeter Observations of Supergiants and Planetary Nebulae

Edwards, Jessica Louise January 2015 (has links)
High mass loss rates in evolved stars make them the major contributors to recycling processed material back into the interstellar medium. This mass loss creates large circumstellar shells, rich in molecular material. This dissertation presents millimeter and submillimeter studies of the end stages of low mass and high mass stars in order to probe their molecular content in more detail. In low mass stars, the molecular material is carried on into the planetary nebula (PN) stage. Observations of CS, HCO⁺, and CO in planetary nebulae (PNe) of various post-asymptotic giant branch ages have shown that molecular abundances in these objects do not significantly vary with age, as previously thought. More detailed observations of the slightly oxygen-rich PN NGC 6537 resulted in the detection of CN, HCN, HNC, CCH, CS, SO, H₂CO, HCO⁺ and N₂H⁺, as well as numerous ¹³C isotopologues. Observations of the middle-aged PN M2-48 showed the presence of CN, HCN, HNC, CS, SO, SO₂, SiO, HCO⁺, N₂H⁺, and several ¹³C isotopologues. These observations represent the first detections of CS, SO, SO₂, and SiO in any planetary nebula. The implications of these observations are discussed. A 1 mm spectral survey of the supergiant star NML Cygni has been carried out with the Arizona Radio Observatory Submillimeter Telescope resulting in the observation of 102 emission features arising from 17 different molecules and 4 unidentified features. The line profiles observed in this circumstellar shell are asymmetric and vary between different molecules, akin to what has been seen in another supergiant, VY Canis Majoris. The non-LTE radiative transfer code ESCAPADE has been used to model molecular abundances in the various asymmetric outflows of VY Canis Majoris, showing just how chemically and kinematically complex these supergiant circumstellar envelopes really are.

Young stars and interstellar extinction in the North America and Pelican nebulae / Jaunos žvaigždės ir tarpžvaigždinė ekstinkcija Šiaurės Amerikos ir Pelikano debesyse

Laugalys, Vygandas 01 April 2010 (has links)
A Milky Way region in the direction of the North America and Pelican Nebulae is investigated using CCD photometry of 2600 stars in the Vilnius seven-color system. Its central part was covered with a CCD camera on the Maksutov wide-field telescope of the Moletai Observatory. Deeper CCD exposures for most interesting selected targets were taken with the 1 m telescope of the USNO Flagstaff Station. The author developed a new method for CCD data processing trying to reduce systematic errors and to increase photometric accuracy. This allowed us to measure M67 stars with high precision and use it as a CCD standard region in all our subsequent observations. To investigate interstellar extinction law in the area we obtained spectra for 33 B-type stars with the 2.3 m telescope of Steward Observatory at Kitt Peak. We also used near-infrared 2MASS data and other data sources when they were available. From photometric results in the Vilnius system we determined two-dimensional spectral types, color excesses, interstellar extinctions and distances of ~1300 stars. For more accurate determination of open cluster ages we recalibrated the zero-age main sequence in absolute magnitude vs. color diagram of the Vilnius system. We also investigated the possible connection between two open clusters in the area and surrounding star-forming region. Young stellar objects and possible ionizing sources of the NAP gas clouds were identified. / Naudojant CCD fotometriją, ištirta Paukščių Tako sritis Šiaurės Amerikos ir Pelikano ūkų kryptimi. The Structure of Broad Line Region and the Effects of Cooling Function in Active Galactic Nuclei

Wang, Ye 01 January 2014 (has links)
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are the most mystic objects in the universe. They are usually very far away from our Galaxy, which means that they are ancient objects. They are also luminous and have unique features in their spectra. Studying AGNs helps understanding the early universe and the evolution of galaxies. This Dissertation aims to research the structure of AGNs and the cooling function in the AGNs environment. I first investigate what optical/ultraviolet spectroscopic features would be produced by Broad-line Region (BLR) clouds crossing our line of sight to the accretion disk, the source of the optical/UV continuum. This research, prompted by recent X-ray observations, suggests that single cloud has little effect on the optical/UV spectrum. However, an ensemble of clouds produces a strong distinctive feature between the Lyman limit and Lyα. The extent of these features indicates the line-of-sight covering factor of clouds and may explain the ubiquitous AGN spectral break around 1100Å. I next study, considering the physical parameters of AGNs, how the gas cooling function changes at high temperature (T > 104 K) over a wide range of density (nH < 1012 cm−3) and metallicity (Z < 30Z⊙). I find that both density and metallicity change the ionization status of the gas. I provide numerical cooling functions by describing the total cooling as a sum of four parts: that due to H&He, the heavy elements, electron-electron bremsstrahlung, and grains. Finally, I also provide a function giving the electron fraction, which can be used to convert the cooling function into a cooling rate. Last, I extend the cooling-function study to the seldom-explored low-temperature range (T < 104 K). For primordial gas, gas lacking elements heavier than B, I find that radiative attachment and Compton recoil are important cooling processes when the gas kinetic temperature is lower than the temperature of the cosmic microwave background. I also find that collisional de-excitation of HD and H2 is not important above 1000K unlike claims of previous studies. For the dust-free solar case, we identify water as the dominant coolant in high density-environments. We also analyze the parameter ranges where metal, metal molecules, or all molecules, dominate the total cooling. We provide the density, above which the metal or metal molecules become the dominant coolants, as a function of temperature and metallicity. For the ISM case, with dust and depleted abundances, we find that dust does not directly cool the gas. Rather, dust modifies he cooling by affecting the chemistral balance. Similar to the high-temperature case, I also provide numerical cooling data.

The local radio sky : high frequency-resolution single-dish studies of polarised Galactic synchrotron emission around 1.4 GHz

Leclercq, Indy January 2017 (has links)
Polarised synchrotron emission from the Milky Way is of interest for its role as a foreground to the polarised CMB and as a probe of the interstellar medium. The Galactic ALFA Continuum Transit Survey (GALFACTS) and the Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey (GMIMS) are two ongoing surveys of the diffuse polarised emission around 1.4 GHz, with wide bandwidths and high frequency-resolution. In this thesis, I use early data from GALFACTS to investigate the behaviour of polarised, diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission. I also analyse GMIMS total intensity data. I derive a rotation measure (RM) map of the GALFACTS sky using a combination of RM-synthesis and linear angle fitting, commenting on the structure of the maps in general and on specific regions in particular. Overall I find that the maps are rich in features, and probe the RM structure of the extended Galactic emission with reasonable accuracy. I also derive the Angular Power Spectrum (APS) of the polarised emission for thirty-one 15 by 15 degree subregions across the GALFACTS data. I compute the E- and B-modes (E+B) and the scalar APS of the polarised emission (PI). I parametrise the APS by fitting a power law to the data. Comparing the E+B APS to the PI APS shows that E+B is consistently steeper across the sky. The APS data is also used to estimate the level of foreground contamination of the CMB B-mode by the synchrotron emission. I find that the slope of the APS averaged over high-latitude, low-emission subregions agrees exactly with that of the Planck 30 GHz polarised emission, thus setting an upper limit to the synchrotron contamination of CMB B-modes. Finally, I evaluate the spurious, systematic, temperature zero-level offset and associated uncertainty in preliminary GMIMS total intensity maps, finding a lower limit of ±0.26 K. I also make spectral index maps made using the GMIMS data and the Haslam et al. (1982) 408 MHz map, improving upon previous spectral index maps in the literature.
