The first chapter defines the context of the period when AEC was founded, as the Church s answer to the changes in Brazilian society in regard to education. The second chapter indicates changes that occurred in the concept of its mission, understood as a liberating-evangelical education, committed to social justice and the transformation of society. The third chapter demonstrates the difficulty that AEC has had in recognizing the need of a critical view of its Utopian project vis-a-vis its transcendental illusion and the approach to the Utopian horizon of modernity. The contradiction, that is a result of its choice and of the praxis of popular education as a means of fulfilling its Utopia as an alternative pedagogical practice for Catholic schools, is discussed. AEC assumes the historic subject of the popular movements in its anthropological concept and proposes a non-conflictive, harmonious education. Its Utopian proposal that places its hope in the Kingdom of God, with a broader horizon, is contradictory when faced with the Utopian project of modern society that believes in human achievement. AEC sees the Catholic school as an ecclesial cell, but must recognize the need for interdisciplinary dialogue, leaving space for theological transcendence. / Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a proposta de educação da Associação de Educação Católica do Brasil: a aproximação que a AEC faz de seu projeto utópico com o projeto histórico, transformando-o em uma proposta pedagógica com o objetivo de educar o sujeito histórico, para que se torne responsável pela transformação da sociedade, tendo como exigência a prática libertadora. No primeiro capítulo contextualiza-se o período fundante da AEC, como resposta da Igreja às mudanças ocorridas na sociedade brasileira no aspecto da educação. No segundo capítulo serão apontadas as mudanças ocorridas na concepção da missão, a Educação Evangélico-libertadora, comprometida com a justiça social e a transformação da sociedade. No terceiro capítulo demonstra-se a dificuldade de a AEC reconhecer a necessidade da crítica de seu projeto utópico quanto à ilusão transcendental e à aproximação do horizonte utópico da modernidade. Discutem-se as contradições decorrentes de sua opção e da práxis da educação popular como meio de realização de sua utopia e como prática pedagógica alternativa para as escolas católicas. Em sua concepção antropológica, a AEC assume o sujeito histórico dos movimentos populares e propõe uma educação não conflitiva, mas harmoniosa. Sua proposta utópica, que, ao mesmo tempo, coloca sua esperança no Reino de Deus, num horizonte maior, se contradiz ao aproximá-la do projeto utópico da sociedade moderna, que acredita na factibilidade humana. A AEC entende a escola católica, como célula eclesial, mas precisa reconhecer a necessidade do diálogo interdisciplinar, deixando espaço para transcendência teológica.
