Tourism Based on Reintroductions of Threatened Mammals: Achieving Positive Conservation Outcomes

King, Narelle Gaye, n/a January 2006 (has links)
Reintroduction programs have often been used to help redress serious declines across species' former ranges, but they suffer from high expense and low success rates. Tourism is one tool that could be used to support such programs, by generating funding for the programs and the local community, and by educating tourists about reintroductions and conservation. However, if tourism is not incorporated successfully into reintroduction programs, it may not provide any advantages and may even harm the reintroduction. There is a need to find ways to ensure efforts to integrate tourism and reintroductions achieve positive conservation outcomes. This is a topic that has been little researched to date. To achieve positive conservation outcomes, the enterprises must have financial sustainability and sustainable mammal populations. This thesis investigates ways to achieve these dual goals. The international literature is reviewed to establish what can be learnt from previous reintroduction attempts to increase the likelihood of reintroductions of mammals being successful. A number of broad measures are established, including starting the enterprises by reintroducing herbivores and early breeders, preferably wild caught, and then moving to carnivores or omnivores and captive-bred animals when staff have more experience. Some new ideas are developed for experimental releases that will add to the available knowledge on how to increase the chance of successful reintroductions. Tourism enterprises based on reintroductions of threatened native mammals in Australia and South Africa are reviewed. The review shows tourism enterprises based on reintroductions make significant contributions to conservation, but enterprises in Australia need to diversify further. It also describes a number of significant obstacles that enterprises in Australia and South Africa face in achieving financial sustainability and sustainable mammal populations. It then provides recommendations for dealing with the problems, such as employing staff or consultants with knowledge of wildlife management and marketing, and allowing tourists to view wildlife only on guided tours. Finally, the review identifies ways that government bodies in Australia could better facilitate enterprises based on reintroductions, such as making endangered species available free of charge or heavily subsidised at this stage, and then later running wildlife auctions. Legislation systems applying to tourism enterprises based on mammal reintroductions in Australia and South Africa are also reviewed. The review identifies a number of shortcomings of the current Australian legislation that affects the ability of government bodies to facilitate the development of such enterprises. Certain changes to the legislation are suggested. The international literature on factors influencing tourist satisfaction is reviewed and field research at an Australian case study site described, to determine ways tourism enterprises based on reintroductions can maximise tourist satisfaction. The field research draws out a number of new lessons for satisfying tourists, including: placing supplementary food or building waterholes in grasslands and areas with sparse vegetation; providing supplementary food for some species of wildlife; and providing pamphlets with information on the wildlife. The field research also illustrates some new ideas for tests to determine which methods should be used to maximise tourist satisfaction at a specific site, such as testing whether it is better to run tours in vehicles or on foot. The published international literature on minimising impacts of tourism on wildlife is reviewed and field research at one Australian case study site and one Chinese case study site described, to determine how to minimise the negative impacts of tourists on wildlife. The field research illustrates some new ideas for tests to determine which techniques should be used to minimise the impacts of tourism on wildlife at a specific site, such as tests to determine whether it is necessary to ensure tourists remain on the path at all times. The thesis then brings all these elements together into a flow chart giving recommendations to increase the rate of success of tourism enterprises that reintroduce mammals in achieving financial sustainability and sustainable mammal populations.

Nově vzniklé rekreační lokality v kontextu sídelní struktury a ochrany krajiny v Česku / Newly Established Recreational Localities in the Context of the Settlement Structure and Landscape Protection in Czechia

Nožičková, Veronika January 2010 (has links)
The objective of the diploma thesis is to capture the phenomenon of internationalization of second housing in Czechia using the example of Dutch investment in tourism and recreation with a focus on new recreational localities and their impacts on the destinations. The development of this phenomenon has occurred in Czechia since 1990s in the context of the changing geopolitical and geo-economic situation. An important role plays also the offer on real estate market and environmentally attractive localities in the country. Recreational localities owned and used mainly by foreign (Dutch) clients for individual recreation and commercial purposes are established in areas with high tourist-recreational potential. They become an integral part of the physical and social environment and their specific features change its structure and links. Their benefits and risks depend on the nature of recreational localities projects and the target destinations as well. Key words: Czechia, impacts of tourism and recreation, second housing, internationalization, recreational localities

Integrační politika EU v oblasti cestovního ruchu a její vliv na regionální podporu v ČR / EU Tourism Policy and its impact on regional develoment in the Czech republic

Vyskočilová, Hana January 2010 (has links)
Tourism is expected to be the world's future. The most important aspects of tourism are particularly the effects on GDP, employment, capital investment and the balance of payments. The important role of tourism in European economies is acknowledged by the European Union itself, which seeks to create a common tourism policy. The purpose of this work is to define the EU tourism policy, primarily in the terms of legal instruments and regional policy, and determine whether and to what extent that policy has its impact on tourism in the Czech Republic. The first chapter will explain the basic concepts and definitions of tourism and its economic importance for the economy. The second section will describe the development of European tourism policy; for better understanding this part will also define EU institutions responsible for tourism, their competencies and used instruments to promote tourism, including the Structural Funds. The third part of the thesis will provide basic information about legislation and strategic documents in tourism in the Czech Republic, but the central part of the chapter will be devoted to the influence of the European Union to the tourism policy in the Czech Republic. The fourth chapter presents the EU's regional policy as a tool to influence the tourism policy in the Czech Republic and its regions.

THE INFLUENCE OF MUSIC FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE ON DESTINATION IMAGE AND FESTIVAL IMAGE.pdf

Matthew Corey Mosley (7027583) 15 August 2019 (has links)
<p>The purpose of this study is to explore how attending a blues music festival can influence an attendees image of the destination, the image of the festival and their intention to return. Predicting attendee behavior intentions have been a constant focus of academics and festival organizers. It has been shown that the festival environment (venue and facilities) are influential, that positive interactions with festival staff and vendors affect attendee satisfaction and depending on the study the aspect surrounding the musical performance can influence future behavior. This study has incorporated an area previously found to be important to attendee satisfaction but so far has not been studied with the other aspects of how a festival performs. This study investigated the influence of those four factors (venue, services, core product and safety) on attendees’ perception of their satisfaction with the festival and the subsequent influence on their image of the destination and festival. </p>

The Impact of Contemporary Tourism Development on Colonial Built Heritage: Case Study of the Portuguese Legacy in Macau, China

Chaplin, Robert Ian Chaplin, ianchaplin@gmail.com January 2007 (has links)
The hypothesis put forward in this thesis is that tourism can be the agent for the sustainable conservation and development of the valuable legacy of colonial built heritage by capitalizing on its tangible and intangible assets. The key variable is the recognition of the intrinsic value of both iconic and non-iconic properties and sites that constitute the extrinsic value of the cultural attractions of the tourism destination. The research problem is concerned with assessing the impact of contemporary tourism development on these attractions and identifying the issues affecting preservation and realization of asset potential. The research aims to support the collaboration between tourism professionals and cultural heritage stakeholders committed to resolving issues and problems for the destination identified within the stages of the tourism destination's life cycle of evolution (Butler, 1980).

Dopady cestovního ruchu na historické centrum Kutné Hory / The impacts of tourism on Kutna Hora's historical centre

Kříž, Tomáš January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to evaluate the impacts of tourism on the historical centre of Kutna Hora. Several methods have been used to reach this aim. The statistical data has been analysed in order to develop an idea about the city and calculate measurable indicators of tourism influence. The main part of the thesis consists of the identification of tourist function in the historical centre, by mapping the current functions of houses and analysis of the accompanying effects of the touristification. Observation of the daily rhythm of the centre enriches the research with the composition of its users and the time dimension. The quality of site management and the impacts of tourism connected with the World Heritage List inscription are examined by evaluating targets of the management plan and exploration of UNESCO monitoring reports. Interviews with local residents of Kutna Hora investigate their own attitudes towards tourism in their town and verify the acquired findings. Keywords: Kutna Hora, impacts of tourism, touristification, tourist function, daily rhythm, historical centre, UNESCO

Limnologia do rio Betari (Iporanga, SP) e a relação com o estado de conservação de sua bacia hidrográfica: subsídios para o desenvolvimento sustentável / Limnology of the Betari river (Iporanga-SP) and the relation with the conservation state of its hydrographic basin: subsidiaries for a sustainable development

Domingos, Mário Donizeti 20 June 2002 (has links)
The Betari River basin, localized in one of the few areas still preserved in the São Paulo Sate, presents particular characteristics regarding its geology and geomorphology and the Atlantic Forest, still preserved. The increasing flow of tourists is also important, provoking a plan less occupation of the area. Part of the basin is occupied by the Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira - PETAR. With the objective of characterizing the Betari River and its hydrographic basin, relate the river\'s limnologic characteristics with the use and occupation of the land and determine the impact of tourism in the Serra borough, to obtain an environmental diagnostic of the basin and supply subsidiaries for its sustainable development, samples were collected in 4 seasons of the year, in 14 points throughout the river. In these points, sedimentation and hydraulic, physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the water were studied. Remote sensoring and geo-processing were also used to integrate information about the hydrographic basin and the body of water. Statistical analyses were then carried out to determine groups. A study of the economic and social-cultural impact was carried out in the Serra borough, the main human settlement in the basin. The results show an existence of spatial homogeneity in the physical and chemical parameters analyzed in the river. The geological characteristics of the basin seem to have a great influence in the hydrological parameters analyzed. The quality of the water is good, showing that the antropic action has not yet compromised the lotic system, despite the existence of heavy metals in sediment, a reflex of the rejects of mineral activities present in the area. The hydrographic basin did not present great changes in its vegetation in the last few years. The bentonic community presented temporal and special variation and, apparently, the hydraulic factors and the canal\'s characteristics were the main determiners of these variations. The economical and social-cultural impacts of tourism, positive or negative, were detected on the residing population. Apparently, the Serrana community passes through a euphoric period, thanks to the economical benefits brought by the tourist activity; however, the lack of planning can compromise the activity and these regional ecosystems, impeding, this way the sustainable development.
