This study was carried out in Armando Ribeiro Gon?alves Reservoir, RN, Canal do Patax? and after the water station treatment (WST). The physical-chemical parameters were measured in situ and inorganic nutrients, chlorophyll a and Free Oxygen Demand (FOD) were analyzed in laboratory conditions. Quali quantitative analyses of phytoplankton were carried out utilizing Sedgwick-Rafter camera. Results indicate that DQO concentrations were low. FOD concentrations in the reservoir were comparatively higher in the dry season (5.21 mgL-1; 5.64 mgL-1 e 6.05 mgL-1) in relation to the wet season (4.52 mgL-1; 4.12 mgL-1 e 4.92 mgL-1), in surface, intermediate and bottom waters, respectively. FOD values were inferior to 1.0mgL-1in both Canal do Patax? and after WST, which is considered adequate for public use reservoirs. Although FOD concentrations were low, Armando Ribeiro Gon?alves Reservoir, Canal do Patax? and WST were classified as euthophizied, mesotrophic ad oligotrophic, respectively, considering the Index of Trophic State Criteria. Chlorophyll a concentrations in the study reservoir were higher in the surface (199.2 ?gL-1) during the wet season, whereas in Canal do Patax? concentrations decreased from 1.56 ?gL-1 to 0.028 ?gL-1, and after WST values were low (0.059 ?gL-1). Dominance of cianobacterias, such as Planktotrhix agardhii (dry season) and Microcystis sp (wet season) was registered in all three areas. In the reservoir and Canal do Patax?, density of cianobacterias, such as P. agardhii and Microcistys sp., was superior to the values allowed by the Health ministry (HM). However, after WST, density values of cianobacteria were inferior to values established by the HM / O presente estudo objetivou avaliar as mudan?as espa?o-temporal e a qualidade da ?gua, atrav?s de indicadores qu?micos e bi?ticos, durante um per?odo de estiagem (jan, fev e nov de 2006) e um per?odo de chuvas (mar?o a junho de 2006). O estudo foi realizado na Barragem Armando Ribeiro Gon?alves/RN (ARG), no Canal do Patax? e depois da Esta??o de Tratamento da ?gua (ETA). Os par?metros f?sico-qu?micos foram medidos in situ e os valores dos nutrientes inorg?nicos, clorofila a e Demanda Qu?mica de Oxig?nio (DQO) foram analisados em laborat?rio. As an?lises quali-quantitativa das microalgas foram realizadas utilizando-se a c?mara de Sedgwick-Rafter. Os resultados indicaram que as concentra??es da DQO de uma maneira geral foram baixas. Na barragem ARG, no per?odo de estiagem a DQO foi comparativamente mais elevada (5,21 mgL-1; 5,64 mgL-1 e 6,05 mgL-1) do que no per?odo de chuvas (4,52 mgL-1; 4,12 mgL-1 e 4,92 mgL-1), respectivamente, na superf?cie, meio e fundo. Antes (Canal do Patax?) e depois da ETA os valores encontraram-se abaixo de 1,0mgL-1, considerado de boa qualidade para reservat?rios de abastecimento p?blico. Apesar dos baixos valores da DQO, a barragem ARG, o Canal do Patax? e a ?gua depois do tratamento foram classificadas, respectivamente, como eutrofizada, mesotr?fica e oligotr?fica, segundo os crit?rios do ?ndice de Estado Tr?fico. As concentra??es de clorofila a na Barragem ARG foram maiores na superf?cie (199,2 ?gL-1) no per?odo de chuvas. No Canal do Patax? houve um decr?scimo nas concentra??es de clorofila a de 1,56 ?gL-1 at? 0,028 ?gL-1 e depois da ETA o valor m?dio foi baixo (0,059 ?gL-1). Houve domin?ncia de cianobact?rias como Planktotrhix agardhii, no per?odo de estiagem, e Microcystis sp, no per?odo de chuvas, nos tr?s locais de estudo. As densidades das cianobact?rias P. agardhii e Microcistys sp na Barragem ARG e no Canal do Patax? excederam a densidade permitida pelo Minist?rio da Sa?de (MS). Contudo, depois da ETA, os valores da densidade de cianobact?rias foram inferiores ao preconizado pelo MS
