Transient electric birefringence of macromolecular systems

Rudd, P. J. January 1974 (has links)
The transient electric birefringence method, i. e. the transient Kerr effect, has been employed to study the optical, electrical and geometrical properties of three macromolecular systems. An apparatus is described in which the birefringence could be measured when d. c. electric field pulses (of duration 1μs to 5s and strength up to 50 KV/cm) and a. c. electric field pulses (of duration greater than 5 ms, of frequency up to 20 kHz, and strength up to 3 KV/Cm) were applied to solutions of macromolecules. Both the linear and quadratic optical systems have been employed to measure the induced birefringence. A theoretical analysis and review of the errors implicit in such measurements is given, with suggested alignment and calibration procedures. For the first time in electro-optic work, a data-logging system and computer program have been developed and employed, and enabled the automatic recording of transient responses with subsequent high speed data analysis. Measurements have been made on a polypeptide poly – β – benzyl – 1 – aspartate in two solvents. These show how the method can be used to study a rigid macromolecule. A novel investigation was made on the interaction of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate, with a flexible polymer, polyvinylpyrrolidone. The large variation of Kerr constant observed with addition of surfactant indicated a great potential use of this method for studying polymer surfactant interactions. An aqueous suspension of the bacteria E. coli was also studied, but changes in turbidity and not birefringence were the origin of the observed effects. Novel practical methods of investigation, and turbidity calculations carried out with the aid of a computer enabled size parameters and electrical properties to be determined for E. coli. For the first time such results were in agreement with electro-optic light scattering measurements.

Birrefringência induzida por movimento de matéria em mesofases liotrópicas na fase isotrópica / Induced birefringence by movement of matter in lyotropic mesophases in the isotropic phase.

Fernandes, Paulo Ricardo Garcia 28 September 1990 (has links)
With a mixture of the Potassium Laurate, Decanol and water, the birefringence induced by gradient of the velocity, in the isotropic phase, is determinated. The movement are provocated through periodic vibrations of the superface of the sample holder. The relaxation time of the roll structure is determinated experimental an theorically. The temperature T* (temperature around the transition temperature), well-known in thermotropic liquid crystals, is determinated in liotropic liquid crystals. The confection of the sensible vibration dispositive is proposed.

The Study and Implementation of Compact Ring Laser for the Generation of Single Frequency IR and Green Lasers

Weng, Chun-Jen 27 June 2001 (has links)
Abstract Single frequency laser has the advantages of high stability in frequency and low noise. Therefore, single frequency laser is now widely used in applications, such as high precision measurement, holography and data storage. Attempts to generate second harmonic radiation using a linear cavity have typically resulted in significant amplitude fluctuations due to longitudinal mode coupling. Various techniques have been proposed for solving the so called ¡§green problem¡¨ to achieve single longitudinal mode operation, such as inserting optical component in the conventional linear cavity or use ring cavity instead of linear cavity. Uni-directional ring cavity has shown to be the most robust method for producing single frequency laser. The purpose of this study is to develop compact and low-cost single frequency IR and green lasers. A novel symmetrical two-mirror figure ¡§8¡¨ ring cavity is developed. Instead of using several laser mirrors for beam deflection, this ring laser system employs only two spherical mirrors to form the laser cavity for traveling wave oscillation and eliminates ¡§spatial hole burning¡¨ caused by the standing wave operation. In this thesis, we use two-mirror figure ¡§8¡¨ ring cavity for the generation of single frequency IR and green lasers. The polarization status is crucial for high efficient intracavity frequency doubling. The polarization evaluation in a nonplanar and reentrant ring cavity is characterized by measuring the thermally induced linear and circular birefringence and analyzing the polarization rotation due to cavity configuration. We have demonstrated a 2-mirror figure ¡§8¡¨ ring cavity which is compact and has few optical elements. The stable single frequency laser output of our ring cavity promises to make the design widely applicable to solid-state lasers.

The Dynamics of Viscoelastic Wormlike Micelles in Complex Flows

Moss, Geoffrey R 01 January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Solutions of self-assembled wormlike micelles are used with ever increasing frequency in a multitude of consumer products ranging from cosmetic to industrial applications. Owing to the wide range of applications, flows of interest are often complex in nature; exhibiting both extensional and shear regions that can make modeling and prediction both challenging and valuable. Adding to the complexity, the micellar dynamics are continually changing, resulting in a number of interesting phenomena, such as shear banding and extensional flow instabilities. Presented in this thesis are the results of an investigation into the flow fields generated by both a controllable and idealized porous media, effected as a periodic array of cylinders as well as a single circular cylinder. In order to fully characterize the kinematics, two rheologically documented test fluids were used. The first test channel geometry consists of six equally spaced cylinders, arranged perpendicular to the flow, while the second consists of a single circular cylinder. By systematically varying the Deborah number, the flow kinematics, stability and pressure drop were measured. A combination of particle image velocimetry in conjunction with flush mount pressure transducers were used to characterize the flow, while flow induced birefringence measurements were used to determine micelle deformation and alignment. In the periodic geometry, the pressure drop was found to decrease initially due to the shear thinning of the test fluid, and then exhibit a dramatic upturn as other elastic effects begin to dominate in one of the test fluids. In the case of the single cylinder, no such upturn was observed. Presented is evidence of the onset of an elastic instability in one of the test fluids above a critical Deborah number, manifest in fluctuating transient pressure drop measurements and asymmetric streamlines. This instability was observed in both test geometries. It is argued that this instability can be attributed to the measurable differences in the extensional rheology of the two fluids.

Estudo das propriedades de armazenamento óptico e grades de relevo em poliuretano derivado de azo-benzeno / Information optically storage and relief gratings study in material derivative of azo-benzene polyrethane

Neves, Ubaldo Martins das 30 June 2003 (has links)
Polymers containing azobenzenic groups have been studied due to their applications on non-linear optics, surface relief gratings (SRG) and photoinduced anisotropy for optical storage. The reversal photoisomerization trans-cis-trans property of the azo group induces a molecular reorientation. In this work, cast films of na azobenzene derivative, the polyurethane MDI-DR19, were studied. The build-up and decay of the birefringence were studied as a function of the photoisomerization exciting light power. The data of the build-up and decay of the birefringence were fitted with a bi-exponential function, which shows the stability of the MDI-DR19 for application in optical storage, since 65% of the induced birefringence remains after a long time. The optical storage is illustrated by recording a birefringence image in a film of MDI-DR19. It was also performed a SRG over films of MDI-DR19 applying an interference finger pattern with a P and S polarized light. The light induced gratings shows good uniformity and characteristics compatible with those presented in the literature.
