Project portfolio management for product innovation in service and manufacturing industriesKillen, Catherine P January 2008 (has links)
Thesis (PhD) -- Macquarie University, Macquarie Graduate School of Management, 2008. / Bibliography: p. 301-327. / Introduction -- Literature review -- Methodology and phase 1 research design -- Phase 1 findings -- Phase 2 research design -- Phase 2 findings -- Conclusions and implications. / This research examines the relationship between innovation project portfolio management (IPPM) capabilities and competitive advantage. Innovation projects - or projects for the development of new products - are of escalating importance in an increasingly competitive, globalised and deregulated environment characterised by shortening product lifecycles and dynamic markets. IPPM capabilities aim to improve the success rates for product innovation activities by providing a holistic and responsive decision-making environment to maximise the long-term value of innovation investments across the portfolio of innovation projects. This research takes a wide view and investigates the overall rganisational capability for the management of the innovation project portfolio. -- Successful product innovation is no longer primarily a concern of manufacturing-based industries - product development in service industries is a growing endeavour in an increasingly important industry. Therefore this research includes service product development environments and is the first to extend beyond the traditional manufacturing industry base for IPPM research. This is also the first study to investigate IPPM capabilities in Australia. -- A pragmatic perspective guides a two-phase study encompassing a quantitative survey and a qualitative multiple-case study, the combination of methods providing a deeper level of understanding than could be achieved by either method alone. Findings support prior IPPM studies and suggest a positive relationship between structured IPPM capabilities and improved new product outcomes. The research highlights similarities and differences between service and manufacturing environments, and suggests future challenges will result from the increasing blurring of the boundaries between service and manufacturing industries. This research adopts a 'dynamic capabilities' perspective and draws on organisational learning theory to investigate the path-dependent nature of IPPM capability development. It adds to the understanding of how IPPM capabilities work with the resource base and contribute to competitive advantage. The findings of the research are presented in a maturity model and several conceptual models, and areas for future research are identified. / Mode of access: World Wide Web. / xxvii, 436 p. ill. Previous issue date: 2015-01-28 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) / The objective is to analyze the structural changes in the Brazilian industry between 1995 and 2009 considering its intersectoral relations. The structural causes of change were also identified in the industrial product, value added and employment in the industry; analyzed the evolution of linkages of industrial sectors; and checked the probabilities of change in the degree of linkages of these sectors. Such objectives are achieved with the use of input-output analysis via the method of structural decomposition; calculations of linkages index of Ghosh and Rasmussen / Hirschman; and the Markov chain method. From the data analysis it is evident that the structural changes in the industry, from the process of economic liberalization in the 1990s, were to weaken the intersectoral demand of the Brazilian economy. There was
an industrial restructuring with increasing of the intermediate demands of intensive natural resources sectors while, especially the intensive scale sectors and with differentiated technology reduced their intermediate demands. The main relation proven in the study is that between 1995 and 2009 there was a reduction in the share of industry sectors in employment, value added and product and a growth service sectors. This transformation was stimulated by technological changes (structural changes in sectoral linkages) and changes in final demand. In such a way that changes in final demand were that most explained the employment growth, the value added growth and the product growth in the economy. In the other way the technological changes contributed to employment growth e value added growth, but reduced economy product in the period.

Manufacturing companies need to integrate their internal processes digitally to become more competitive and deliver higher quality products to the consumer market. Information defined at early design stages needs to be recovered at all stages of the life cycle of a product. To accomplish this, information models that incorporate intelligence and enable the representation of the real world are necessary. On the other hand, electronic products manufacturers need to comply with environmental requirements present in regulatory frameworks as the RoHS Directive in order to offer their products in several countries. The present work proposes the application of semantic models for helping companies meet the requirements established by the RoHS Directive. A model, created using a reference ontology, establishes semantic relationships between entities that represent product lifecycle stages, product structure and business objects. Business processes, modeled in the form of activity and information flows, are linked to RoHS requirements that can be viewed through the reports in the Essential Project open source framework. The resulting semantic model is, therefore, useful for converting environment-related needs to design requirements through a product development process that addresses the RoHS Directive. A consumer electronics product has been selected for demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed solution.

An integrated model of milling and flotation for the optimal recovery of sulphide ores at the Kansanshi mineLusambo, Martin 11 1900 (has links)
Kansanshi mine sulphide ore circuit did not achieve target flotation recovery in
2016, hence it was deemed necessary to carry out a research aimed at optimizing
this circuit. The objective of the research was to optimise the Kansanshi milling
and flotation circuit processing a copper sulphide ore.
In line with this, samples were obtained around the circuit and processed in the
laboratory for moisture content, slurry concentration, particle size distribution,
and flotation response. This information was then used to build a computer-based
model of the Kansanshi milling and flotation circuit. This was done in MODSIM®,
a software package specialising in the design and simulation of mineral processing
operations. After careful appraisal, appropriate models were selected for the semi
autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mills, SAG mill discharge screen,
hydrocyclones, pebble crusher, and the flotation cells. The calibrated model was
then used to simulate the effects of key operating parameters on flotation
recovery.
Analysis using the attainable region technique revealed that the SAG mill feed-rate
should be adjusted from 1719 tph to 2090 tph. This would lead to a better
utilisation of the pebble crusher that can process 358 tph of pebbles from the
current 198 tph. From the simulation work, it was established that rougher
flotation recovery can be improved from the current 80.0 % to 82.3 %. The technoeconomic benefits of the proposition are yet to be investigated.
Findings from the research concluded that the milling circuit optimum operating
parameter; which generated a final product falling predominantly in the range -
150 +38 μm were SAG and ball mills conditions of ball sizes 200 and 40mm
respectively, ball mill ball filling 32% and rotational speed between 75 and 80% for
both SAG and ball mills. The optimum hydrocyclone feed slurry concentration was
found to be 62% solids. Additionally, the SAG mill discharge screen aperture size
of 6 mm was the optimum. It must be noted that slurry concentration did not show any impact on both the SAG and ball mills performance. The SAG mill ball
filling did not show any significant improvement on performance. / College of Engineering, Science and Technology / M. Tech. (Chemical Engineering)

Adoption of e-banking amongst small, micro and medium enterprises in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan MunicipalityManala, Maseribe Maureen 01 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the level of adoption, usage and factors that influence the adoption of electronic banking (e-banking) by small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs) listed in the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality (CTMM). Despite efforts by commercial banks to promote e-banking (internet and cell phone banking) to its customers, the adoption rate for internet and cell phone banking appears to be low. Based on the literature reviewed, the SMME sector has been widely excluded from the formal banking services. It is also observed that e-banking can enable SMMEs to grow and enter international markets. Technology acceptance model (TAM) integrated with perceived risk theory (PRT) was used to investigate factors that influence adoption and usage of e-banking. The study followed a quantitative research approach. Respondents were selected using simple random sampling technique. A structured survey questionnaire was used to collect the data. The survey was conducted on 160 SMMEs in the CTMM with the assistance of fieldworkers. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), Pearson’s bivariate correlation, and multiple regression. The results revealed that perceived ease of use had a significant positive influence on the attitude towards e-banking. Perceived usefulness had a positive but insignificant influence on the attitude towards e-banking. Security risk was the only perceived risk dimension that had a significant negative influence on attitude towards e-banking. However, financial risk, privacy risk, performance risk and social risk had a positive and insignificant influence on attitude towards e-banking. It was envisaged that this study will enable banks to develop strategies that are aimed at increasing their SMME market share. / Finance, Risk management and Banking / M. Com. (Finance)
