Industry attitudes towards and perceptions of an independent central procurement and supply chain function for MRO supplies

Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters in Business Administration, Durban University of Technology, 2009. / All manufacturing organizations have plants that require the provision of Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) supplies in the manufacture of products. The appropriate and effective application of these concepts and principals contribute significantly to the effective and efficient utilization of plant assets and other resources within the manufacturing organization. Components of the supply chain can be outsourced to third parties who with the correct focus, expertise and experience can realise strategic benefits for the manufacturing organization, allowing it to concentrate on activities that are core to its business. It is necessary to determine the organizational buying centre’s attitudes and perceptions to this concept in order to establish an independent third party Maintenance Repair and Operation (MRO) vendor. The area of study is the Durban South area of Kwazulu Natal. Sample units of analysis were selected on a judgemental basis to ensure that different industrial sectors with different outsourcing experiences were represented. Data of a qualitative descriptive nature was collected. The models employed provided a robust and constructive framework and by and large there was consensus between the research findings and the literature. A key recommendation is that a mature and well disciplined environment within organizations and in their relationships with suppliers and collaborators is essential. Key further research is needed in the establishment of current and prospective future commonality of MRO stock items across different manufacturing organizations in the same geographical area.

The biotechnology revolution and its potential impact on the South African economy

Every now and then a technological development comes along that causes a quantum leap in the technological progress of the world. Such were the mechanical developments that led to the industrial revolution, or the electronic developments that led to the more recent information technology revolution. A characteristic of these developments is its profound impact on the world economy. An explosion of new product and production possibilities typically follows such landmark technological developments. So fast and intense are the technological and resulting economic changes, that it can truly be described as a revolution. Recently, the rapid advances in molecular biology have caused such a multitude of new product and production possibilities in biological sciences that it can be described as a biotechnology revolution. Modern biotechnological techniques like recombinant DNA techniques have made the genetic manipulation of organisms possible. This creates possibilities of new production techniques and products previously unimaginable. The centre stage of the biotechnology revolution is in the US and Europe. South Africa and other developing countries have lagged behind in adopting and extracting economic value from modern biotechnology. This study investigates the issues in modern biotechnology and how the South African economy can benefit from modern biotechnology. It was found that modern biotechnology has tremendous economic potential and that already many overseas companies are generating huge profits from modern biotechnology products in all fields of biotechnology. However, some concerns about the safety of modern biotechnology point at the necessity for a proper global regulatory framework to ensure the consumer acceptance of biotechnology products required to continue to extract value from new biotechnology developments. Various cost factors need to be considered in the biotechnology industry and in South Africa the importance of these cost factors is much more pronounced due to the small scale of the South African economy. South Africa and many other developing countries will most definitely benefit from adopting modern biotechnology and expanding national biotechnology capacity. However, analyses like cost-volume-profit, economic potential, and production factor gap analyses need to be executed, preferably up to product level, to determine the appropriate biotechnology areas or products with the biggest economic potential and on which South Africa should focus its biotechnology efforts. Government stimulation of the South African biotechnology industry is welcomed by the industry. The expansion of South African biotechnology capacity will result in sustainable long-term economic benefits, not only to South Africa, but also to other developing African countries. It is concluded that the large-scale adoption of modern biotechnology in South Africa is appropriate and that the exploding biotechnology product developments, combined with increased market acceptance of modern biotechnology products, will create significant economic benefits in the South African economy. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Sedert die vroegste tye in die geskiedenis van die wereld het tegnologiese ontwikkeling 'n sentrale rol in die vooruitgang van die wereldekonomie gespeel. Elke nou en dan vind daar 'n tegnologiese ontwikkeling plaas wat 'n kwantumsprong in die vooruitgang van die wereld tot gevolg he!. Voorbeelde hiervan is die meganiese ontwikkelinge wat tot die industriele revolusie gelei het, of die meer onlangse elektroniese ontwikkelinge wat die informasietegnologierevolusie tot gevolg gehad het. 'n Kenmerk van hierdie ontwikkelinge is die geweldige impak wat dit op die wereldekonomie gehad het. 'n Ontploffing in produkte en produksietegnieke is tipies die gevolg van hierdie landmerk tegnologiese ontwikkelinge. The relationship between global pharmaceutical companies and the biotechnology industry in South Africa : implications for an emerging biotechnology industry in South Africa

Mini-study project (MBA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This report reviews the global and South African pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and provides an overview of the changes taking place within these two industries. It highlights the impact this relationship will have on a developing South African biotechnology industry. Since the 1980s the pharmaceutical industry has experienced phenomenal growth in sales and profits. By the mid 1990s drug sales exceeded USD250 billion. Today the pharmaceutical industry is dominated by multi-national corporations with extensive R&D budgets, widespread use of trademarks and patents and complex commercial process technology. However they face threats from depleted product pipelines, patent expiry on billion dollar drug products, generic competition, increases in drug approval times, costs and price pressures. The entrepreneurial biotechnology industry promises to solve a number of the pharmaceutical industry's problems. In recent years biotechnology companies proved more effective in the development of new molecular entities. They promise individualised therapeutics, novel and more efficacious drug discovery and development of preventative treatments. However the decrease in equity financing after 2001 left almost 40% of biotechnology companies with less than 1 year of R&D funding. The industry experienced losses again in 2002 and the world is divided over the ethical, environmental and economic implications of biotechnological applications. The biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries have a symbiotic but antagonistic relationship. The change in this relationship will hugely affect South Africa's ideals of developing a biotechnology industry. Various diseases plague South Africa including HIV/AIDS, TB, obesity, diabetes, hypertension and infective diseases. These diseases will have a huge impact on South Africa's society. Yet only 10% of global R&D funding is committed to third world diseases and existing drugs and treatments are either not effective or too expensive for developing countries. It is in this situation that biotechnology and the development of a biotechnology industry could playa major role in alleviating South Africa's health burden. South Africa is already capable in first generation biotechnology, but third generation applications holds the most promise. Developing countries face various obstacles and challenges, but all boast well for South Africa. The government has committed R400 million (over a three year period) to utilize South Africa's biotechnology potential. Further, the country has highly skilled researchers, indigenous plant and animal species, a diverse population and a favorable exchange rate (low R&D costs). / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die projek ondersoek beide die globale en Suid Afrikaanse farmaseutiese en biotegnologie industrieë. Verder word die veranderinge wat plaasvind in die industrieë onder die soeklig geplaas. Die projek beklemtoon die impak wat die verhouding sal hê op 'n ontwikkelende biotegnologie industrie in Suid Afrika. Die farmaseutiese industrie het sedert die 1980s dubbel syfer groei getoon in omsete en wins. Teen die middel 90's het verkope van farmaseutiese middels US$250 miljard wêreldwyd oorskry. Vandag word die farmaseutiese industrie oorheers deur multi-nasionale korporasies met omvattende navorsing en ontwikkelings begrotings, algemene gebruik van handelsmerkte, patente en komplekse proses-tegnologieë. An institutional economics approach to agribusiness in development : South African case studies

Thesis (PhDAgric) -- Stellenbosch University, 2006. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation is a sojourn into institutional economics and its application to contemporary economic and development issues in South Africa. Economic development initiatives in agribusiness have much to gain from the theories and approaches advanced by the new institutional economics. Institutions are considered essential to the functioning of economies, markets and organizations, despite its neglect in neoclassical economics The study intends to prove that 'institutions matter', especially when social and economic transformation is necessary. The cases studied exhibit how institutions matter and shape economic outcomes. The theoretical basis established in this thesis was applied to economic development challenges such as contracting, organizational innovation, economic empowerment, land reform, building social capital, organizational design, supply chain management, entrepreneurial development, and modes of constructive engagement. The thesis is a compilation of academic papers applied to the various selected developmental challenges prevalent in South African agriculture. The study begins by delving into the more popular New Institutional Economics literature and specifically transaction cost economics. Somewhat unexpectedly, this leads to a greater appreciation for the insights generated by the Old Institutionalists in investigating the nature of institutions. Hence, the old institutional economics gains prominence in the latter part of this work, contrary to contemporary approaches followed in agricultural economics. The acknowledgement given to aspects like social capital and embeddedness is consistent with Williamson's proposed framework for the economics of institutions and this is used as the conceptual framework in this thesis. Whereas the new institutional economics was found to be useful in yielding knowledge through analysis and remediable outcomes, the old institutional economics retains its advantage in promoting understanding of problems especially in the face of complexity. This inclination has influenced the thesis in two ways. First, it diverted the latter part of the work towards the old institutional economics and the role of social capital in shaping institutions and economic behaviour. Second, it reverts to theories on the nature of the firm that complements the transaction cost approach. The transaction costs approach is thus only used where it is found most effective i.e. analysing vertical integration between firms and the relevant ex ante incentives and the ex post governance aspects Most studies are motivated by a general recognition of the role of institutions in framing economic outcomes and end up in the new institutional economics and subsequently transactions cost economics. This favouring of the transaction cost approach has found appeal due to its ability to predict structural and organisational outcomes such as the efficient boundaries of firms, internal organisation, contractual relations, incentives, etc. Methodologically, it enables analysts to employ the empirical and mathematical rigour that has become a feature, but too often the purpose, of economic research. Three papers are devoted to this approach and elicit organisational designs that best contend with identified transaction costs. The study confirms that several aspects matter in institutional analysis when applied in an economic developmental context such as South Africa. Historical context is acknowledged as a critical facet of institutional analyses in the sense that institutions are shaped by the forces of history. Social capital is established as an important component of institutional economic analysis and particularly relevant in situations where social capital has been eroded by political economic manipulations. Attending to social capital require (inter alia) insight into the nature of the societal context, implied path dependency, the extent of trust, enforcement mechanisms, and agency relations. Three of the papers attend to these aspects. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die proefskrif bevat 'n toepassing van institusionele ekonomie op kontemporere ekonomiese- en ontwikkelingskwessies in Suid Afrika. Die nuwe institusionele ekonomie het veel te hied tot ekonomiese ontwikkelingsinisiatiewe vera! in agribesigheid. Institusies word beskou as essentieel tot die funksionering van die ekonomie, markte en organisasies, ongeag, die nalaat daarvan in die neoklassieke ekonomie. Modelling multi-product industries in computable general equilibrium (CGE) models

Thesis (PhD (Agric))--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is common practice in computable general equilibrium (CGE) models that the output composition of multi-product industries remains constant despite changes in relative prices of products. The results of any scenario will show that products produced by a single industry will still be produced in the same ratio to each other as reflected by the base data. The objective of the study was to develop a CGE model for South Africa in which this assumption of fixed composition of output can be selectively relaxed. In order to allow industries to adjust their output composition in response to changes in relative prices of products a Constant Elasticity of Transformation (CET) function and the related first order condition were incorporated into an existing CGE model. This alternative specification of an output transformation function in the model enables the modeller to allow selected multi-product industries to increase production of products that show greater price increases relative to other products. The first order condition of the CET function determines the optimal combination of products for each industry. With the inclusion of the CET function there is a trade-off between theoretical rigour of the model and realism of the results, therefore an assumption of input-output separability was introduced as a way of recognising that the inclusion of a CET function violates the assumption that prices in the same row of a social accounting matrix (SAM) are equivalent. The model was calibrated with a SAM for South Africa for 2007 that was developed for purposes of this study. Set controls were included in the model to generalise the model in order that it can be calibrated with data from other countries as well. The SAM for South Africa contains provincial level information in the accounts for agriculture, labour and households. The agricultural industries are defined by geographical area, hence these industries are particularly good examples of multi-product industries that respond to relative price changes when determining production levels of individual products. The adjusted CGE model was used to analyse four scenarios focusing on selected issues mentioned in the National Development Plan for South Africa released by the National Planning Commission in 2011. The scenarios relate to increases in fruit exports as a result of global positioning, technical efficiency improvements for the agricultural sector through continued research and development, factor productivity growth in government and selected services sectors resulting from fighting corruption and curbing strikes, and augmenting the supply of skilled labour through an improvement in the quality of education. The results of the adjusted model show the desired effect: producers produce relatively more of the products for which they can get a relatively higher price and vice versa. This holds true regardless of whether the level of industry output increases or decreases. The impact of the model adjustment and the effects of changes in the levels of elasticities and choice of variables to close the model were analysed as part of the sensitivity analyses. The impact of changes in the functional form, elasticities and model closures on results, are different for each scenario. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Dit is erkende praktyk in berekenbare algemene ewewigsmodelle dat die verhoudings waarin produkte tot mekaar geproduseer word deur multi-produk industrieë konstant gehou word, ongeag veranderings in relatiewe pryse van produkte. An analysis of the financial reporting compliance of South African public agricultural companies

(International Accounting) / This minor dissertation assesses the extent to which South African public companies that are engaged in agricultural activities are complying with the recognition, measurement and disclosure requirements of IAS 41, Agriculture, as well as whether they are providing any additional voluntary disclosures about their biological assets. Sixteen large South African public companies with material holdings of biological assets in their statements of financial position were selected for analysis. The study used the last published annual financial statements for reporting periods beginning before 1 January 2013 in order to assess compliance with IAS 41 prior to the implementation of IFRS 13. The financial statements of these companies were analysed to identify the existence of both the compulsory disclosures listed in IAS 41, as well as the extent of any voluntary disclosures relating to their biological assets. The results of the analysis show that the majority of South African agricultural companies are using fair value to measure their biological assets at initial recognition as well as at the end of each reporting period. None of the companies, however, is using the quoted price in an active market as the fair value for these assets, implying that companies need to incur additional costs to obtain fair valuations which comply with the requirements of IAS 41. While companies also state that they are using fair value to value their agricultural produce, none of them is providing any further information on how the fair values for their agricultural produce ar e calculated. Most of these companies are complying with the compulsory disclosure requirements of IAS 41, and are also providing certain of the recommended disclosures listed in IAS 41. In total, companies with material holdings of plants as biological assets are complying more fully with the compulsory disclosure requirements of IAS 41 than those with livestock. These companies are also providing more detailed voluntary disclosures about their biological asset holdings than the companies with material holdings of livestock as biological assets. The study concludes that the measurement methods used by companies to value their biological assets and the nature and extent of both compulsory and voluntary disclosures of these assets are sector-specific. This is consistent with the findings of previous research. This study contributes to the existing literature by providing a baseline on the financial reporting of agricultural entities in South Africa prior to the implementation of IFRS 13.

Towards the development of an organisation development model for the mining industry

Litt. et Phil.(Leadership in Performance and Change) / The aim of this study was to develop an organisation development model to support organisational change and transformation in a dynamic, continuously changing business environment, specifically for the mining industry in South Africa. Literature revealed that there is a tendency to employ universal and generic models to challenges of organisational change, whereas successful 00 needs a situation specific or contextualised approach. The field of OD reflects a paucity of empirical research, necessitating a greater research competence and more in-depth, robust empirical 00 studies to answer to 'contemporary contextual and environmental challenges. A further call is voiced towards OD to resolve organisational change challenges from a systemic perspective, which has been a central tenet of the field. A number of research participants from a South African company that has been implementing organisational change and transformation interventions in the mining sector, were selected by means of purposive sampling. A modernist qualitative approach with the case study as research strategy was utilised during the development of the model. Various data collection techniques were utilised with grounded theory as a data analysis technique to explore and systematically develop the concepts and categories of the model. Atlas.ti, together with manual coding procedures were utilised to systematically organise and analyse the rich descriptive data. Credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability were ensured by following the guidelines presented in the literature. In the literature study, the sample's narrative was critically contrasted against the established scientific knowledge base of OD, considering specifically taxonomies, models and theories related to the emergent OD model. The resulting model deviates from the established perspectives on OD, in that it reflects a hybrid of several fields of study endeavour. The latter is consistent with a business practice perspective that integrates and deal with a single application domain, compared to a science-informed perspective which conducts research largely within defined (and confined) disciplinary boundaries. The OD model has implications for the mining industry in South Africa, and the development of grounded theory should facilitate the application thereof in future research.

University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, March 2016 / New technology-based firms (NTBFs) or technopreneurs are assumed to be one of the most important sources of economic value creation and development. Apart from bringing innovation with high growth and impact potential, NTBFs are faced with high uncertainty and demand a supporting environment that enhances firm’s performance. It can be concluded that new firms or new incubatees operate in competitive settings and demand systems that aid them to realize sustainable growth. Globally, there is a well-established body of knowledge that scrutinizes factors and relationships between factors that enhance NTBFs innovation performance. Majority of existing literature concurs that there are numerous variables of factors that can influence the product or service performance in respect to turnover. Within sub-Saharan Africa, technology incubation support programmes are seen as factors that affect a firm’s performance. However, the rise of NTBFs, the startups concept and technology incubator practices are all very much in their infancy in South Africa. From this point of view, it is significant to qualify the existing global body of knowledge to Gauteng’s context in order to identify the right mix factors impacting innovation performance of new technology-based firms. Factors such as survival, research and development (i.e. R&D propensity) and technological capability are seen as levers that impact new technology-based firm’s innovation performance. In a narrow sense, in this study, we aim to extend existing research by identifying determinant factors related to survival, R&D propensity and technological capability as independent variables; and analyse the nexus of these factors and innovation performance, the independent variable. We prudently identify startup firms that are in technology and embrace innovations while most of these new startups are still in an early development stage and receive comprehensive investment from university or government innovation in Gauteng. A total of 206 NTBFs were surveyed. Initially, the study employs exploratory factor analysis to first estimate the underlying variables and estimate of latent loadings. Subsequently, the correlations between survival, technological capability, R&D propensity and innovation performance measurements were tested. ii The findings suggest that there is no relationship between the number of years under the incubation management and producing new products and services that firms can launch to new market to gain profits in order to survive. Particular, in South Africa, the technology incubator movement is still in an infancy stage; hence for firms starting new ventures and producing products, it is difficult. The evidence from this study also found no relationship between survival (i.e. access to knowledge and collaboration) and innovation performance i.e. turnover. On the other hand, it was expected that investing vigorously in R&D would create patents, publications, products and services which would impact turnover. In opposition, the empirical results found no statistical relationship between R&D propensity and turnover. Our results should also be interpreted in the broad sense; measuring R&D propensity should be viewed with the understanding of complexity in measuring R&D impact to turnover. The study also found no relationship between marketing and firm turnover. Although theoretical studies suggest applying marketing capability is a key in launching and commercialising innovations, these firms tend to place more focus on product developments and pay less attention to marketing capabilities. Consistent with existing literature, the study found that there is a positive relationship between technological capability - innovativeness and innovation performance i.e. turnover. This is in line with the researcher’s position that generation, developing and implementation of new ideas leads successful performance of innovation, while we have contended that adapting or modifying existing technologies, emphasising introduction of new products, marketing of tried and true technologies and using previous research to implement technologies as determinant factors to technological capability (i.e. Technology Adaptation) impacts innovation performance. The results of the study concluded that there is a relationship between Technology Adaptation and innovation performance. In regards, competitive environment, the study found that no relationship between introducing innovation ahead of competitors and innovation performance. It was expected that these firms would avoid taking risks, these firms are not equipped with resources to experiment innovation methods or lead in new market identification. The empirical evidence generated from this study is significant and contributes to the existing body of knowledge for this reason: the study advances literature of measurements of innovation performance which varies from one study to the other. / GR2018

Breaking down gender barriers: exploring experiences of underground female mine workers in a mining company

However, literature has reported an increase in the number of women penetrating the field in recent years (Benya, 2009; Singer, 2002). New legislative frameworks in South Africa, such as the Mining Charter of 2002 (amended 2010) and the Mineral Petroleum Resources Development Act have made provisions for females to be absorbed into the field of mining, but this has not gone without challenges. This study thus sought to gain in-depth understanding of the experiences of underground female mine workers and demystify gender barriers that affect the functioning of women within the mining sector. The study was qualitative in nature and adopted a case study design to richly understand the phenomenon. The study used semi-structured interviews to collect data. Ten participants and two key informants were selected using purposive sampling technique. Data collected from participants was analysed using thematic analysis, in conjunction with the literature reviewed. The study addressed the social and human needs of female mine workers. It was found that, the mining industry has not been progressive in adequately addressing the unique needs of women who work underground. The study was essential in unravelling the experiences of female mine workers and thus made recommendations that can be used to introduce workplace appropriate interventions to be implemented to ensure that underground women mine workers are well accommodated within the industry. / XL2018
