Restoration: Bridging the Gaps A Graphic Translation of Ecological RestorationBlack, Alyssandra 13 July 2016 (has links) (PDF)
The terms restoration ecology and ecological restoration are used interchangeably confusing the definition and work of ecological restoration and its many components. Restoration ecology is a type of scientific practice whose work will be a component of a restoration project while ecological restoration is the sum of practices, social, historical and ecological that constitute the field of restoration (Higgs, 2005). Within our rapidly urbanizing society the role of ecological restoration and restoring ecosystem services is increasingly important, especially within our coastal cities. The goals of restoration differ when the classification of restoration techniques is by ecosystem service, not ecological function, framing restoration around people’s use of the ecosystem, not the ecosystems needs. The problems faced in restoration work affect social, historical and ecological aspects that reach beyond the physical and political boundaries of the restoration site. Ecological restorationists need to understand the differences in framing that a non-universal definition for ecological restoration creates, while also understanding how to bridge these differences. One solution is graphic communication and representation of the different components that scientists and non-scientists alike can understand. This study uses restoration project plans to illustrate the goals within projects, and shows where the goals of scientists and designers conflict and harmonize. Shown through map overlays and graphics, this comparison provides professionals within the field, with resources and illustrations to better communicate. In addition, graphics and matrices will illustrate key terms, concepts and the intersection of restoration types with habitat types, ecosystem services and social components. In conclusion, this study addresses differences in ways of learning, and kinds of knowledge other than science needed in ecological restoration projects, and uses graphics to bridge these gaps.

Re-defining data visuals for an efficient and sustainable food waste managementSingh, Suhas January 2017 (has links)
The use of visual data representation is increasing the possibilities to exchange information and communicate indifferent contexts all over the world. Communicating food wastage visually to influence consuming patterns isone of these possibilities. Food wastage is currently a much-prioritized topic in Sweden as well as globally due toits negative impacts on society, environment and the economy, and therefore there is much need to bringinnovative solutions supporting reduction of food waste. This thesis presents a qualitative research based on a casestudy of food waste management at Sala municipality in Sweden while exploring the current visual datarepresentation techniques and its further potential to make food waste management more sustainable. The researchframework used in this thesis is based on visual rhetoric and the innovation theories. The thesis analyzes foodwastage from an international perspective, its connection to sustainable development goals and how MatomaticAB uses a visual data representation tool to address food wastage. The thesis further explains how the users associated with Sala municipality interpret the existing tool, thechallenges they face and review their expectations to build a new visual data representation model. The results ofquestionnaires filled by user’s, state that 50% of the respondents understand the current tool to its full capacityand only 50% of the respondents are satisfied with the overall tool. When it comes to the choice of datapresentation 67% of the users showed interest in use of infographics instead of the conventional bar graphs, andtherefore some parameters like, making the tool more interesting using infographics, user friendly by limiting thedata displayed and interactive by giving user options to explore further as per their liking, were thought whiledesigning the new visual data representation model.

The initial inquiry of the dissertation is the communication process between research institutions and the non-scientific community, observing the mediating role of the graphic designer. Thus, the approach to two major theoretical references: Information Design - in which infography is inserted - and Scientific Popularization. In addition, a set of infographic solutions was compiled to exemplify aspects that qualify efficient visual communication, in an investigation of both aesthetic and cognitive attributes. Finally, an empirical analysis model for journalistic infographics is proposed, which was tested with a corpus taken from the Scientific Popularization magazine Pesquisa FAPESP, published by São Paulo Research Foundation - FAPESP. The achieved results from the model allow the visualization of the emphasis given, respectively, to the following design functions: utility, precision and satisfaction. Hence, it enables to verify the adequacy of the employed infographic format to the informational content represented.

Previous issue date: 2012-06-20 / The specific object of this study is the work of Spanish infographist Jaime
Serra, recognized in his field for developing projects with expressive character.
Our goal is to investigate how the communication of information is
constructed in Serra s infographics. Infography is a diagrammatic combination
of texts and images in many different fields of communication, including
journalism. The research on this topic fits into the study of human
communication manifestations and contributes to understand the current
state of infographics and the critical discussion that seeks for guidelines for
infographics creation process. We observed two groups: one that supports
the development of objective, technical and scientific infographics and another
that supports infographics with emphasis on subjectivity and aesthetic
expressivity. Our main question is: how Serra articulates expression plane
and content plane to build different layers of meaning? The theory base
relates the graphic semiology developed by BERTIN (1967) and the graphic
syntax theory by Yuri ENGELHARDT (2002). The first chapter presents significant
historical moments that exploit the expressiveness in infographics,
the presence of Serra s work in this context and the critical debate around
the theme through the arguments of Edward Tufte, Alberto Cairo, and Nigel
Holmes. In the second chapter we write about Bertin s visual variables theory
and Engelhardt s graphic syntax theory. These two theories together with
Greimas s semiotic provide the basis to study three examples of Serra s work
in the third chapter. Through the observation of some common characteristics
in infographics that explore new expression forms to communicate information,
we concluded that the use of unusual instruments to create images
in infographics - as the incorporation of elements of the cultural imaginary
and the displacement of actors place in the enunciation - are resources
that Serra uses in his creation process and that significantly participates in
the construction of meaning communicated in his infographics / O objeto específico deste estudo é o trabalho do infografista espanhol Jaime

The research aims to determine and analyze how these two important online media in Latin America have used new technologies like HTML5 to modernize the information that they present. Therefore, the comparative analysis will stick to the multimedia infographics, which has undergone profound technological changes, changing the format and the content of the news. Besides the theoretical conceptualization and review of literature on infographics, newsgame, transmedia storytelling, online journalism, interactivity and programming languages used to produce multimedia infographics, the paper will bring foward a comparative analysis of the section Infografia, presented by Folha.com, and Especiales Multimedia, by Clarín.com. The analysis, quantitative and qualitative, will check the narrative and informational resources, tools and Internet programming language technologies that are used by the two media, based on the analysis model proposed by Alberto Cairo in the book Infografia 2.0 visualización interactiva de información en prensa. The research has shown that although the Clarín.com has used Flash technology in most multimedia infographics analyzed, the results of comparative analysis show that the Argentine online newspaper infographics allowed higher levels of interactivity than multimedia infographics in Folha.com, mostly developed in HTML5.

EFFECTIVENESS OF USING AUTOMATICALLY ADVANCED VS. MANUALLY ADVANCED INFOGRAPHICS IN HEALTH AWARENESSAsefeh Kardgar (18451410) 02 May 2024 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">Infographics are increasingly used as visual communication tools for conveying health information to diverse audiences. However, research is lacking on how specific infographic design factors influence learning outcomes. This study aimed to determine the comparative effectiveness of automatically advanced (Group A) versus manually advanced (Group B) infographics for promoting breast cancer awareness and knowledge. A mixed-methods quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was utilized. The sample comprised 42 participants for analysis. Of these, the majority, 41 persons self-reported as female, with one participant indicating their gender as 'other.' Participant ages ranged from 25 to 55 years (M = 40.5, SD = 7.62). Most participants were well-educated, with graduate degrees or other advanced education beyond a bachelor's degree. Participants were randomly assigned to either the automatically advanced infographic group (Group A) or the manually advanced infographic group (Group B). Results indicated that Group B had significantly higher scores on the knowledge post-test compared to Group A, suggesting improved recall and comprehension of key information. There were no significant differences in cognitive load ratings or viewing duration between the groups. Qualitative feedback from participants suggested that Group B's manually advanced infographic facilitated better self-pacing and absorption of content. While the study's findings provide preliminary evidence supporting the efficacy of manually advanced infographics in learning complex health information, limitations are acknowledged. The research contributes to the design of patient education materials and underscores the necessity for further investigations across varied populations and health topics to understand the impact of infographic design more comprehensively on learning and behavior.</p>
